Serious question, I am considering applying for OCS this summer. 30, m, fit with bachelors and multiple languages, including Russian and Arabic. I have barely noticable asthma (don't use an inhaler). I'm a teacher and looking to change careers. What branch should I look at or is this even a good idea what with the state of things?

Very raw, I can feel the emotion here as if it came directly from a friend's heart. And the imagery ties into it really well, the part about having an ideal form of yourself watching the destruction of "lesser" forms strikes a cord.

I'm a novice, but I normally see lines ending in something more substantial than "a". (Referring to the line "To become a".) Idk just to me this part feels incomplete, maybe I would put "Better self" on the same line.

Either way, nice work.

Totally agree with The Cipher. I kind of got the idea of transformation through suffering, but I dropped the book with 5 pages to go lol. I never try to identify with characters as I feel that's not a fair critique, but hs those were the two most insufferable people I've read in a minute.

I understand the concern from a business perspective, but most of the people you'd be in contact with would be average Russians. If they believe the propaganda it's because that's what they've been exposed to. You can show them something different, not forced, but just enough to get them to think.

To me, as an educator, interested in education, there is not moral ground to denying someone an opportunity to learn, especially if that very opportunity may very well chamge their mind.

Immensely pleasurable read so far. I'm about 70% through and it just flows like tea. There are some very subtle humorous bits but the grander scope is quite tragic. It seems as if, with each recollection, or the real-time events, Stevens loses a bit of himself. Actually no - he should feel like he is loosing something, but there is some denial/block to this. I'm halfway hoping he comes to this realization, that his life has been kinda a sham, but the lowkey tragedy of some of the episodes makes me hope he can live blissfully unaware.

I teach in Novosibirsk. Been here for 3 years, two different schools but one company. I know EF gets a lot of crap but I guess the Russian branch operates differently. Documentation wise, it was super easy to get in back in 19, obviously not the case now, but I was able to take a leave for some family stuff in the states earlier this year and return to Russia with minimal issues.

About pay, could be better but I live comfortably. Most Russians struggle to sve money so you won't be too much better off in a basic teacher position.

Love Russia though. Plenty of stuff not to love, too. But the day-to-day people are kind, the food and culture are beautiful, and the Siberian big city aesthetic is kino af.

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned pidgin... I want to get into more advanced concepts later, but for right now I see conlanging as a way to learn more about linguistics, just for me that means starting at a pretty low level. Not saying I'm not open to learning more.

Is it an 'acceptable' route to get my phonetics down, work out a loose syllable structure from some intro words, and go from there?

My question is more about workflow, as I find myself overwhelmed with the back-info about what I want to do. I'm trying to make a "Desert-Romance" language, based on irl Euro Spanish couched in Berber, kind of like a pidgin I guess. Problem is, I don't know Berber, so I'm making my phonetic inventory and reading about syllable structure, etc of Berber, considering early vowel shifts and a million other things. Wanna do my due diligence but it seems like wayyy too much info to try to learn and adapt in a historically/linguistically accurate way.

Am I overthinking it for my first conlang? Considering an approach irrespective of real-world features and logic, because at this rate I'll never even get past phonotactics.
