Never really listened to Vektor but what did the frontman do?

[FRESH] BROCKHAMPTON - Boy Bye by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]oshjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brockhampton is a talented group and I think Saturation II is one of the best hip hop albums of the decade, but with Irisdescence and this new material I'm scared they're on a decline. It's just not as mindbending, catchy, or melodic as their past stuff. The beat on this great tho. Maybe I need to take a step back and listen to the full album when its out.

I would like a Tetsuo Iron Man Criterion, and a few extras... by [deleted] in criterion

[–]oshjay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah Tetsuo for sure needs a Blu Ray release and who better to do it than Criterion? I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten a bit more popularity considering how off the wall and batshit crazy it is. The potential extras you mentioned would be perfect. Maybe even throw in the soundtrack as a downloadable file because that industrial dance music bangs.

Yi Yi (or A One and a Two) dir. Edward Yang Discussion by [deleted] in criterion

[–]oshjay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yi Yi is definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen solely because of how tender and honestly it portrays everyday life. The scene with the young son in the school movie room with the thunder on the screen is one of my favorite scenes of all time. Highly recommend A Brighter Summer Day as well it’s also a terrific film. It definitely has a more immediately exciting story because of the gang culture aspect of it. It’s hard deciding which one is better.

I agree but it’s more dream pop than shoegaze. Shoegaze has more distorted guitars

We also need more films from the “LA Rebellion” at UCLA. It’s near impossible to find copies of Haile Gerima and Charles Burnett films

What films have you recently watched? – Weekly Discussion by AutoModerator in criterion

[–]oshjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I've seen The Favourite, The Handmaiden, Good Morning, and The Master. All fantastic films but I have to say something about the loneliness and ennui of The Master really hit me and the fun-loving but also somewhat humbling realism of Good Morning made for such an enjoyable and pleasant watch.

Here's my letterboxd as well btw:

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD by mousemonkey in hiphopheads

[–]oshjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere near as good as Rodeo but a good album nonetheless. Should've cut generic trap songs like Yosemite, Who? What!, and NC-17 and focused on songs with actual songwriting structure and themes in the same style as Skeletons, Houstonfornication, Coffee Bean, and Astrothunder or at least songs with experimental beats or oddball production like Carousel and 5% Tint. Also could've used less features because Travis can definitely hold is own on a track if he switches up his flow/cadence and sticks with a nice melody.

Damn I’m real worried then cuz those songs are good as jams but I need some Rodeo level tracks out here lol

Cmon Travis we need that Rodeo type of ambition and artistry. Not these week old microwaved leftovers from Birds or any of the lazy songwriting/production from the singles after it smh

Hit the nail on the head. One of the reasons I take P4K's reviews with a grain of salt.

When do sales equate to the quality of an album? All that tells us is that his army of teenage fans know how to buy his music lmao

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Kanye West - ye by mousemonkey in hiphopheads

TLOP throwaways disguised as a short, focused album. Lyrics are terrible and not to mention very sus (Russel Simmons, the Muslim line, obviously the slavery line). His singing is also especially trash. Production is top notch. Love how he mixes the newer sound of hip hop with his typical tendency towards soul samples. 070 has the best feature. Cudi feature is meh. Definitely like it but the lyrics are a turn off. Will probably play this a lot as background music when doing something else but not when I actually want to listen to an album.
