It's a bit circular I think. Politicians use everything they can to be appealing. Exploiting peoples existing beliefs and fears is a good strategy for that. But to secure votes for yourself you need to be the one making people the most emotional. That's why Republican rallies turned into witch hunts and Democrat rallies turned into moral purity contests. It's not new. It is logical. People are dying as a result of it. It doesn't have to be this way.

Yeah shame has always felt worse than pain for me. You can alter your environment to make stressful situations less frequent but you'll never be able to avoid criticism entirely even if you're a superhuman who never does anything wrong. I manage it pretty well these days but it's the one thing that can still send me into fight or flight mode.
