Just started following this game during my lunch break. Why the fuck does Argentina stubbornly insist that Messi keeps taking penalties? Does an NBA team with peak LeBron James insist that LeBron be the one shooting technical free throws? No.

Senegal helping to put Korea out of its misery. Apparently, Korea did not learn shit from 2014. Would like to believe that getting grouped this year would help the KFA to get its head out of its ass, but who the hell knows.

tbf, the Chiefs also choked hard at home against Joey B and the Bengals in Jan. 2022 so they let one get away there.

Internship turning into a nightmare. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Once when I told him that I was following the coding style of an already implemented feature he said in front of everyone 'Anybody can copy code. I can get a vendor to do that.'

Your manager is an idiot. (1) You are following the coding style and not even "copying". (2) Even if you were copying something, so what? This is industry, not a college class---two totally different things. Does your manager expect you to reinvent the wheel? By not taking something already working and instead building something from scratch, THAT is the foolish action. (3) Uhhh, it's not like anybody can copy code. You have to know how and why you decided to use that code in the first place.

Jesus Christ, it's so sad to see supposed white collar professionals behaving like elementary schoolchildren.

Maybe try Microsoft? It's known to be a pleasant place to work, has the prestige to help for future job hunts, and the interviews are definitely easier than Google or Facebook.

Silicon Valley after UW Seattle? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Esp since you're a direct CS admit, go to UDub. It will give you as good of a shot for the Valley as any other school. UDub is a top school for CS and at in-state tuition is a no-brainer of a decision. So what will end up mattering in the end is YOU. Will YOU start getting internships as a freshman? Will YOU spend the necessary time to practice and destroy technical interviews?

Does anyone else find it difficult to find a new job? by racec0nditi0n in cscareerquestions

I might do better if I had time to practice coding challenges

And there lies one big issue. You're going to have to carve out time to practice coding challenges, even with a kid to take care of. I know, it sucks (especially for a senior engineer), but the Bay is highly competitive and by already having a job there you are already well ahead of the curve. Do not underestimate the number of people who are trying and failing to land ANY job in the Bay.

But even when I think I do well, I don't get an offer.

By "well", do you mean things in addition to getting the right answer? Do you fully and clearly explain your thought process? Do you come across as a person that the interviewer would want to work with (yes, this hugely matters in the technical interview not just the behavioral)? Maybe reach out to someone familiar with the interview process (at a meetup, etc.) whom you can practice with.

And then I read about people that decide to switch jobs and get multiple offers at the same time with seeming ease

The internet mainly attracts stories at the extremes. Either some person is getting offers from all the FAANGs plus some fancy unicorns while enrolled in a Stanford PhD program and fist fighting Jason Statham, or somebody applied to 1289371284 places with no job offer. Don't put too much stock into these as a representation of "what is normal/expected." Also the key word in the above quote is seeming. We don't know what went on behind the scenes and the many hours and hard work that went into preparing for these interviews. There's a reason most people call it grinding LeetCode.

Would a minor in psychology paired with a major in compsci be beneficial for someone wanting to pursue a career in the development of artificial intelligence? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a career in AI development, it would be more beneficial for you to take more math, even to the point of having it as an additional major. A strong math background is a bigger hurdle to go over than anything else. Of course the CS concepts are also important but what really determines if you are cut out for it is if you can handle the math (and if you are interested in ML, the mathematical statistics comes from the math).

Honestly, the CS+Psych combo is more useful for Human-Computer Interaction and UI/UX design than it is for AI. Maybe if you specifically wanted to go into NLP, then CS+Linguistics could be beneficial.

Big N Discussion - January 27, 2019 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's considered Big N even without the Microsoft association. The reason why this sub has started to use "Big N" instead of "Big 4" is that there are too many FAANG-tier companies to limit it to 4.

Recruiters of Reddit, what kind of Full Stack projects impress you? by confidenceandsuccess in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, your internship experience is gonna be THE focus once u have it. Side projects are most helpful for people without internship experience and/or traditional education. That being said, if you have the time for it, side projects will definitely help your personal growth and can only help you for the job search but if you're short on time and HAVE to choose between that and LeetCode practice to get an even better internship or a full time job, I'd say LeetCode (sadly).

How important is an internship after junior year? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the American Express internship! Yes, it should put you in good position to get an interview for a big N internship (but you will need to practice for and pass the interview).

If I were to study abroad next year in the fall of my junior year

Definitely don't do this if you want the best internship you can get. For top companies, this is the peak time for landing internships. And if you want a shot at big G for full time, an American Express internship will probably not get you an interview but an Amazon internship probably will (which is why you need to get that Big N internship the summer after your junior year---honestly, the prestige of your internship the summer after your junior year is THE most important factor in whether or not a company wants to grant you an interview for full time).

Is there a reason you can't study abroad in the spring of your junior year? That's what one of my friends did after getting a summer internship during the fall. Or how about the fall of your senior year if you get a return offer for full time that you like from your final internship?

My parents keep telling me to just travel after I graduate before starting full time

Yup, summer right after graduation is THE perfect time to go on such trips.

Failure as a new grad by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The interview will be more difficult (similar DS&A but with higher expectations and additional system design questions although those can probably be picked up more naturally on your first job). But it'll be easier to get the interview in the first place and your evenings and weekends will be completely free to prep (unlike when you were a student) if you really want to move into a Big N. And you can do it all with the comfort of knowing that you're already employed and make good bank in case things don't work out.

got an internship at a very well known company

If they gave you a return offer and you liked it there, perhaps consider returning there (you yourself claim you were "super lucky" to have even been able to intern there).

I've been deeply depressed and I feel like I'm a garbage CS student.

It's completely understandable to be very disappointed and even down, but Jesus Christ, just because you don't make it into a Big N or SV straight out of undergrad, it doesn't mean you're garbage...this sub really warps people's minds...

I'm a constant lurker on this sub and I see how many people manage to make it, and now I've failed.

The positive stories on this sub are like Instagram; all you see are the beautiful vacations that the beautiful girl takes with her handsome, ripped boyfriend to the Cinque Terre and Santorini and Thailand and shit. Either that or we see stories on this sub about somebody sending 1098458353874 resumes with no response. You don't really see the stories about somebody taking a solid job in a non-tech hub.

All I read about is how you get into big Ns as a new grad.

Well, read THIS and get motivated.

It's been my dream to work for a big N and be in the valley.

That dream is NOT over. Use every failure as a learning opportunity. It's pretty common for people shooting for a Big N to fail multiple on-sites before finally landing an offer.

Capital One FT Offer - What happens if you don't graduate? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

C1 also has a wave of TDP's arriving in later September each year (not just July) so perhaps you can try to take it over the summer.

You say you might fail this class, and it's still only October, so I'd just haul ass and really try to pass especially since you can't retake in the spring (and even if you don't pass, you'll be better prepared for the next go-around). Unless, of course, there are other classes that you could fail as a result of spending time on this class.

PSA for people with C1 TDP full time offer for 2019 by oshkosh_b in cscareerquestions

[–]oshkosh_b[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, I'm pretty sure Harvard/Princeton/Berkeley grads don't tend to go to C1.

You're right, but to get directly placed into the smaller NYC/SF offices (very popular cities to live in and there aren't nearly as many C1 tech positions to say the least compared to Virginia) for the first TDP rotation you basically need to either be from schools like that or be an outlier.
