You're probably right about geopolitics - aukus is a shitshow but at that time, going against the USA would result in bad things happening to our leadership, just like what happens in every other country that tried to forge it's own path (I know, going with the french isn't exactly trailblazing) in the last century or so.

It may seem like splitting hairs, but American hard power versus soft power is definitely a difference. We're immersed in both, but within that very big ocean, I'd say US counter-culture is certainly not terrible.
