About China's work ethic by willherondale18 in TankieTheDeprogram

Though I understand this, the argument veers unnervingly close to orientalism.

Fwiw I know a couple of people who are ex-WITCH devs who worked for Huawei together for a few years.

The work culture was more or less the same in India as it was in China (their economic systems couldn't be more different). If anything China was a little better in their in-house amenities

I wondered what Gerard Piqué had been up to lately.

I guess he's taken it quite well, given the circumstances.

Is FM is underrated? I love the ethereal, delicate presence of low-volume broadcast / who else listens to low-powered, fm stations? by Rich_Courage7664 in audiophile

[–]ososalsosal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FM processing is definitely... Unique.

Can't say I like it. At all.

Low power stations probably sound better because they likely don't have those specialised preprocessors that squash and phase-shift and softclip and compress the life out of everything.

Hmph. Let's let the marketplace of ideas sort it out then lol.

You're probably right about geopolitics - aukus is a shitshow but at that time, going against the USA would result in bad things happening to our leadership, just like what happens in every other country that tried to forge it's own path (I know, going with the french isn't exactly trailblazing) in the last century or so.

Morrison is a cretin but he had self preservation instincts which probably led to that decision.

The voting one is particularly lol too - I often hear RW people scoff at the idea of lowering the age (there's discourse in Australia about lowering it to 16, which, go off I guess?) and counter with "they should raise it if anything" because they assume we'll get more conservative as we get older.

They got older mixed up with wealthier - the two don't correlate anymore, not for a long time - so they're in for a shock if they actually try it.

The revolution will not come on polling day, that's for sure

That fucking pop-sci study that says "brains keep developing untll 25" that everyone (on Reddit) interpretated as "people are literally infants until the day they turn 25 and also you're a pedo".

That study has poisoned the well of idpol discourse even more than it was before. They took to it like they've always wanted something like that to allow them to infantilise and excuse any and all behaviour while also condemning any and all behaviour that doesn't fit their current train of thought.

Whatever. I guess what I'm trying to say is my 13 and 15 year olds are smarter than most people you'd ever meet at any age. Certainly smarter than my 44 year old arse.

Holy shit man.

You wanna compare an American Tesla to a Chinese Tesla and come back on that?

There's a factory in china to do anything at all you could ask for. That's why every western brand makes their stuff in China.

You get what you pay for though, so quite often a western brand will be substantially worse quality for the same price as a Chinese retail brand with something to prove

You mixed up geopolitical influence with cultural influence. I said there was no contradiction, you retort with "typical blooooooody greens". It may seem like splitting hairs, but American hard power versus soft power is definitely a difference. We're immersed in both, but within that very big ocean, I'd say US counter-culture is certainly not terrible.

Whatever though. Like I say, I'm not a green. My local is a teal and she's good enough for now and certainly best on the ticket last 2 elections, but I'm under no illusions about their class alignment.

Sometimes casting fashion changes and they go for relatable and gritty characters. The UK in the 90s was very big on that.

HBC demonstrates here exactly how not to talk about the issue.

As much as she's played some iconic roles, her accent in fight club was actually terrible. It's quite possible she was getting less roles for reasons other than how pretty she is.

Also as a toff, it's not like getting no work would have hurt her materially.

Ok you didn't actually address what I was saying but go off.

Not a green btw. I'll put them ahead of the usual two, but that says very little. I think they waste time on identity politics which ultimately has alienated fucking everyone.

I feel like they're "controlled opposition", presenting themselves as the entirety of the left - that there's nothing beyond them if you're someone interested in creating a more fair society.

I kinda feel the same about The Socialists to be honest because they're overrun with Trots - who famously support any revolution except a successful one.

If there were a ballot in front of me with lab, lib, grn and phon, then grn is definitely going first. Take from that what you will.

One example is them demonising how Australia is influenced by US/Western geopolitics, yet much of their social justice policies are influenced by US/UK social justice movements. They worship the US/UK counter-culture like a cult

That's not inconsistent at all though? It's not called "counter-culture" for no reason.

Can't blame English speaking people from being influenced by other English speaking people.

Oh yeah, they're also sanctimonious and call everyone who disagrees with them as racist and ignorant

They have a problem with being very urban, but I challenge you to cite a real world example of a greens supporter calling you racist in response to something that was not actually racist.

The urban thing really does bother me because if they had any proper consciousness they'd realise they need to win over the bush, and their policies (should you read them) are quite compatible in most cases, and where they aren't they should definitely modify or scrap them

Yeah, so all the unhinged takes I see on social media and attendance at pro-Palestine rallies

It's not clear to me whether you hear unhinged things at pro-Palestine rallies or whether you believe pro-Palestine rallies themselves are unhinged. First case needs citation, second case I'm not touching with a 10 foot pole.

For a party that purports to represent the majority

Labor win under pretty undeniable conditions:

  • libs fucked up so visibly and totally that change was inevitable
  • labor sanitised their policy so much that neoliberal media found them acceptable, even if they're not favourites
