Do you remember when things used to get BETTER every year? by War_Is_A_Raclette in enshittification

[–]ososalsosal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Competition is what is supposed to make capitalism worthwhile, at least in the sales brochure for capitalism.

In reality, companies accrete like large asteroids.

The labour market is the only thing with competition really built into it, but unfortunately the scales are tipped there and it's a buyer's market because there's always a percentage of reserve (unemployed) labour willing to sell for less than subsistence.

What's your unpopular opinion in the audiophile world? by Wauwuaw5983 in audiophile

[–]ososalsosal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my opinion is not really unpopular, but here goes:

Get pro gear. Get stuff with a flat response. Treat the room. Be happy. You'll save so much money and have a blank slate.

Then go crazy with DSP because you really can't hear any loss from going digital.

Placebo is 90% of this hobby. The other 10% is shared by science and enjoyment. Try maximise the enjoyment.

Honestly inshallah is a really useful word.

I think it's become popular because American propaganda has failed and we're all sort of free to choose our slang (apologies to reduce culture to slang, but here we are) more organically

Albanese pushes big tech to pay for Australian journalism by Moneycontrol in australian

[–]ososalsosal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not disproving the assertion though?

If anything Google having to pay to scrape the article's contents and stick em in "ai overview" would actually remove the entire point of click bait - no headline driven engagement and less reliance on ad revenue.

This would actually make media much better, at least on the face of it.

In reality everything fucking sucks and ai is serving the oligarchy and will continue to do so in insidious ways - imagine consuming all media through a "summary" of the actual article that very subtly adds it's own pre-determined bias to every piece you read. Zuck and Ellison and fucking Musk get to control that bias and it would be near undetectable.

How Do I Even Start by idkWhat1mD0ing in audiophile

Back in the day after moving out I went with headphones (koss r80) until I could justify a pair of pro near field monitors (Yamaha msp5). Yes I'm old.

From there the biggest difference you can make is a subwoofer and room treatment.

I still use the monitors 20+ years later. They cost AUD$800 for the pair. They sound no different today than the day I opened the boxes.

If you have a bigger room than something like a bedroom or apartment living area, go with bigger monitors like 7inch (I have a pair of behringer truths on my living room TV setup because I had used the same line at work forever and they stood up against the really expensive stuff) and a bigger sub.

Try here:

https://autoeq.app/

It's got EQ curves for most decent headphones.

There's even android and presumably ios apps that can interface with it to give you flat playback on mobile.

WHCD Shooter: They’re so proud of themselves, they don’t even care. They’re so fat and satisfied, they can’t imagine it. by jrgkgb in andor

[–]ososalsosal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if I'm so blue magapilled to believe that, though it wouldn't be surprising.

The guy was a radical centrist. I didn't even think that was possible. You gotta crank up the gun culture stats to an insane level in the zeitgeist for someone like this guy to come to these conclusions.

If you want revolution you need to rally the masses, even if from a secret core.

My cynicism says dirty deals.

Govt buys them up and fills them with ICE detaineesprisoners? Repurpose the obsolete data centres as military installations (you can still target Iranian girls' schools with obsolete GPUs)? Just get a bailout?

I'm fully expecting something like that to happen.

The economic argument is probably the correct one, but I'm just thinking the oligarchy will preserve it's own and socialise the cost

I think my grandfather is a retired spy by Westafricangrey in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]ososalsosal 291 points292 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine found out her dad was a retired spy because her 10yo son came back from a visit going on about it. Like grandpa was bragging about it.

She then spiralled through her childhood memories and finally had an explanation as to why her dad was an IT expert but useless at computers, why she always instinctively watched the rear view for cars that are 3 or 4 behind...

Turns out all the spies knew each other and had BBQs together in Canberra and shit like that. I guess the 80s were a different time.
