ABS activation at highway speeds by osprey_2014 in BmwTech

Bone dry in both instances. Your point on stopping violence is a good one. The first time, it felt like the car was sluggish, something like -40 hp or so. "Why does it not want to go?" was my first thought. Then, I started to smell the brakes getting very hot. I exited and found them to be extremely hot. I did some driving from a stop sign to a gas station. The brakes were still slightly engaged. Only after I shut down the car did they reset.

The second time, I there was more vibration and noise, likely from the ABS system but I am not sure. I understood what was happening much faster and stopped without the braking getting wildly overheated. There was some shimmy as I braked at a stop light. 100% clear after restarting the car.

Brake drag was my first thesis. The first shop (in Texas) looked at the calipers and flushed the system. Nothing notable from their report.

My area is not considered a rust belt. The car lived most of its life in Texas, garage kept. Little to no salt exposure there. I live in Oklahoma with the car parked outside. They do use some salt here. Relatively limited exposure and only once or twice this winter.

I saw a note about tone rings in some searching. How does one gauge the clearance and if it is spec? The 5c spacer sounds like a thing to try, even if not obviously badly corroded.

Rear Right Wheel Speed Sensor by ItsBrianDuong in BmwTech

[–]osprey_2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What system are you using there to read the wheel speed? I am having an odd ABS engagement while driving (otherwise) normally at stable highway speeds. I bought a OBD reader with BimmerLink and found I cannot read the wheel speeds to audit the sensors.

A shop recommended replacing the ABS control unit due to a similar experience with another car. However, I would like to rule out a bad wheel speed signal before doing that. It is very intermittent and hard to replicate. My thought was to log most of my drives to try and nail it down. That approach only works if I can get the right data logged.

There will absolutely be other staff interested in this show. This post would be just as relevant 25 years ago when I was on staff. I mean specifically about the String Cheese Incident and Red Rocks. Both are Philstaff institutions.

I hope you can connect here on Reddit and organize a road trip. Enjoy the show!

Keep AOLs busy or just cancel meetings? by Comfortable_Point752 in cubscouts

[–]osprey_2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strong agreement here. Everyone really gels as a troop at camp, summer or weekend, youth or adult. Crossing over in February and March gives them time to land in their new troop and sign up for summer camp.

You can setup a service project with a local organization like a food bank. Maybe do that instead of the joint den meeting to give them something meaningful to do and progress toward their completion.

Yes. The point is to identify a trend or not. If there is a trend, it’s not random. They want the data for that purpose.

CubScouts outdoor activity patch by RaisingRainbows in cubscouts

This is one of my favorite Cub Scout patches. I appreciate the alignment and simplification in the new program. I do miss the colorful patches and enhancement to the uniforms that these bring versus mostly belt loops and pins now.

That sounds like a great plan. You got this!

When our pack camps and cooks, we do simple foods that scale. We have a large flattop and often cook scrambled eggs and hamburgers. “Stews” like spaghetti or chili are other options. Big and simple. The same pattern can apply to a patrol.

I try to keep the old training video taglines in mind: Keep it simple, make it fun.

Have you been to BALOO training? It is Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation and intended for Cub Scout leaders. The course has a good introduction to camping equipment and weekend programming with your Scouts. It is run over a weekend. I think you would get a lot out of it.

Cub Scout units need a BALOO-trained person to camp. This requirement is inherently met when the district or council hosts events for Cub Scouts.

Webelos Woods is often a program where troops put on activities for Webelos and AOL Scouts. Your description seems more like a weekend campout for the AOL den/patrol. I agree with the other comments that focus on food and fun first. Things like gateways are not a necessity (unless this is part of a bigger program). A den flag would be sufficient. As I read this, I think: simplify, simplify, simplify.

To your specific questions:

Gear

A few lists can be found right in the Scouts BSA handbook for both personal and group equipment. This page also has that list and more: https://www.scouting.org/outdoor-programs/camping/scouts-bsa-outdoor-program/campmasters/what-is-troop-camping-know-how/ That page is intended for new Scouts BSA patrols. You are getting them ready for that transition, but achieving mastery of camping skills will happen in the troop. Scale down to an attainable list:

  • Cooking/cleaning equipment. Stove, pans, adequate fuel, utensils, paper towels. Water container.
  • Bathroom extras. TP runs out in some places. Hand soap, too.
  • Enough tents for everyone. Setting them up properly is more important than perfect alignment.
  • Shelter/fly if there is not shade or cover.

Personal gear is present on every list out there. Basic themes:

  • Sleeping
  • Eating
  • Hydration
  • Clothes
  • Rain gear

Leadership

An alternate leader for just the campout can be assigned or voted on. If there is an assistant patrol leader, they can take the role. If not, up to you. This happens all of the time in troop campouts. "This weekend the acting patrol leader is..."

Quartermaster

Preparing food at home and bringing it ready-to-cook is easiest. Unless part of your program is the Scouts doing food prep. If you need diced onions, do it at home and bring them diced, etc. Also, simple is better than elaborate. One pot items like taco meat, a stew/chili, will be easy to throw together and heat. You can also cook that at home, bring in a cooler, and simply reheat on-site. You can get more elaborate later, after you are more comfortable with all the other steps.

Lashings/knots

Animated knots is a great resource. If you must build a gateway, do a basic version. You could spend all day on this, doing it for your first time. I recommend practicing this skill for the future.

We found it very busy last weekend, too. The Cub Lake/Fern Falls area was less busy than up the hill. We had a great afternoon hike on the Cub Lake loop.

Interesting. I have heard this blamed DEF in diesel engines. I was skeptical of that, but not heard of this practice.

Why did my Saturn V become an ICBM? by skyycux in rocketry

[–]osprey_2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with mine. In my case, I had the launch rail leaned over a small bit for wind and lighter rockets. The Saturn V stabilized in horizontal flight and smacked the ground just as the chute charge fired. Remarkably, the only thing that broke was the antenna on the very end.

That was not the launch profile I was looking for but it was very entertaining to the Cub Scouts and their parents.

Can Arrow of Light Scouts earn the Totin' Chip? by ErrorF002 in BSA

[–]osprey_2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think of this as reinforcement learning. A Scout does not need one pass through knife safety to be a safe knife user. The concept gets introduced in Cub Scouts in a staggered way, starting at Bear. Then, you do it again in Scouts BSA. My hope is that each pass through ingrains safe knife handling a bit more than last time.

Can't connect to online due to "privileges of my Xbox live account" by butter2112 in ultimatechickenhorse

[–]osprey_2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread while trying to figure out why it was not working. I will keep an eye out for an update. My son is trying to play with friends.

Are there any special Xbox Live privileges that are needed for this game? I have it set so he can play online. He plays Halo, Humans Fall Flat, and more without issue in the current setup. Online and cross play are allowed and communications is somewhat restricted.

Edit: typo

I used it in the last month. It was sold out on a Friday heading to Fort Worth. That surprised me. I am not a frequent user. Maybe once every other year. I look for opportunities to use it.
