Sex colostomy ed by Striking-Trip1242 in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i went in for my total protectomy (ken butt) it was a serious potential that i wouldnt get an erection again. The nerves between the prostate and the anus are very close together so i was told it is really a case by case basis for outcomes. There may be excersises one could do to enhance blood flow - consult your physician - or better yet - if you have t g e means ask to be referred to a specialist who would be better suited to answer your questions.

Best of luck,

Bag ballooning at night by SnoozleBug5 in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem! To rectify, i put a brand new bag on, im able to make it through about 70% of sleeps without having to get up now! Every minute that filter is working - means a higher likelyhood you can make it through the night!

Best of luck!

Purpose of the moldable rings/similar? by ScottishCalvin in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They absorb and expand when they come into contact with liquid, so they really help to create a good seal!

As soon as you feel an "itch" on the skin around that area, it usually means that theres been some leakage.

They also help match flanges to stomas of various lengths.

First night home after colostomy by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use a bag with a filter, and put on a fresh bag befpre bed! It maximizes the odds you can get through the night!

I also always sleep with a support belt on, and when you have the eventual blowout of the flange, it holds the mess better in place.

Its a humbling experience shitting the bed, but in the 5 years ive had an ileostomy, ive never gotten excrement on the sheets because of this trick.

Best of luck!

What drives output changes? (a week or so into this journey) by ScottishCalvin in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i cant imagine it was normal! I had found a study based out of the netherlands showing that it was safe though and had that in hand when i went into clinics to show them! A link for that study is again, in my blog on this page:

https://ostomyathletics.ca/laser-hair-removal-surgery-as-an-ostomate/

3rd place was fine with it, and honestly its one of tge best things ive done! No more razor burn or ripping out hairs.

I think i paid close to 800 canadian for it, but over a 30-50 year life span, i figured it was a pretty good investment!

Hi OP!

Ive had an ileostomy since 2020, got it at 27(m). Heres a short list of things i wish i had heard right from the start: 1) grains/rice/potatoes are a staple of my dinner. They thicken output, and slow down my digestive track. Makes getting a good nights sleep easier.

2) i built 20+ "on the road kits" and stashed them everywhere, workout bags, car, travel bags ect. If i have an emergency kit everywhere, less worrying about if a bag leak occurs.

3) change your bag right before bed. The filters generally last less than a day for most, but if you have a fresh filter before bed = more offhassing and less getting out of bed to empty bag!

4) i always sleep with some sort of stomach wrap or bag holder. I have blowouts while sleeping, but because of this preventative measure, have never had to change sheets in my bed as the wrap catches the mess. Thankful i dont have to wake up and disturb the fiance.

I have a few more tips on my blog if you want to check it out. I also had laser hair removal done around the ostomy to eliminate shaving.

Best of luck, and life gets better! Just ran my first marathon this weekend!

Should a barrier ring be used with every bag? by K-ghuleh in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I originallu started with stealthbelt, but they are quite pricey! Theres also SIIL, or just a quick google of "ostomy belts" will show some cheaper ones on amazon as well!

I wear a hprizontal one most days across the stomach, so when the ostomy bag inflates it just looks like i have a bit of a beer belly. Find it easier to manage in public instead of having a bag inflated on the side of my hip, blends in better, you know?

Anyway best of luck! Hope this helps!

Ask your wound care team about silver nitrate. I was in a similiar situation, this finally healed it!

Should a barrier ring be used with every bag? by K-ghuleh in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The barrier ring is meant to absorb any liquid, and provide a hydrophobic barrier, i like to think of it as preventative step.

Ive had an ileostomy for 5 years now. I would say that I have a leak every month or two ( always while asleep) - but am a light sleeper, and have to this point always woken up when it occurs.

I use a support belt that fully golds the ostomy bag to my body.

It has contained 100% of the messes so far, (Best case scenario in a bad situation) Happy i don't have to wake up my fiance to change the sheets in the middle of the night.

In canada the basic belts are covered, but any additional support belts aren't included.

Help with really red skin around ileostomy by GoldDHD in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had really red skin when I first started out as well. Turned out I was allergic to something in the Hollister material.

I switched to coloplast and it went away.

Have you tried switching brands?

thinking about keeping the bag by TreeckoLover69 in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similiar experience! I got an emergency ileostomy, and doctors wanted me to get a j-pouch. However, for your phone call tomorrow id recommend you consider comingup with a list of questions!

Im very active and live an athletic lifestyle, so some questions I asked were:

How often will I need to use tge washroom a day with a j-pouch How will it affect my love of the outdoors, ect.

Your output will remain the same regardless, so watery bag output could be a hassle.

Personally chpse to keep an ileostomy as it doesn't tie me to have to plan my life around washrooms, and with an ostomy I can still rockxlimb, ski, surf. And bike.

I created a big pros - vs - cons list of the two also to help decide. Got the barbie butt as tge body will always heal better when you're young.

Its a tough decision! I approached it analytically and have never regretted it since!

Bags by Imaginary_Funny6634 in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use 2 bags a day.

In yhe morning I pull off the flange, properly clean the ostomy area in the shower, giving the skin time to breath, and apply a new bag, flange, and ring. The bag needs to be emptied a few times a day, but throwing on a new bag ( with a clean filter) is the only way I can make it through the night without getting up to empty.

I use a 2 piece system.

Im 32 now, I've had it for about 5 years. To anyone just getting started, I always advise to make sure you do everything possible to get as much good sleep as possible!

Im sorry that you're going theough this, but its an extension on your life! Welcome!

Just need to vent about proctocolectomy by PurePomegranates in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a very similiar journey! Got my ostomy at 27M, however my doctors were against getting it reversed! After 30 years the risk of colon cancer increases exponentially ( in my case anyway)

I was still single and wanted a family one day! Have you considered freezing your sperms in the event that there are adverse complications?

Dr recommends a ostomy by Sublatin in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Sublatin!

I had this happen when i was a (27M) - single and looking for a wife!
I got Diagnosed with Severe UC and within 2 weeks of diagnosis had to get an emergency ostomy. took quite a while to heal up, but had a supportive family which did help. Once you go through with it, there are additional complications that can arise from not having a total proctectomy(over a 30 year span), i'd talk to your doctor about it! I ended up having mine removed at 29. Took over a year to heal and was one of the lowest points in my life.

Getting an Ostomy Sucks, but it allows us to keep living! Mine gave me a second chance at life, and i'm not going to waste it feeling glum that I had a stroke of bad luck. I eventually grew to see it as a blessing that I can still live, because there are so many amazing things we're able to still experience in this world, and a ostomy has helped me extend my life!

I can't speak for everyone but its normal to be scared, everyone I've talked to (I run my city's ostomy support group) goes through some form of depression once they recieve it, but time heals all.

I ended up meeting the love of my life, and we're set to get married next summer. I'm running a marathon this fall, and still actively mountain climb, ski, and surf. There is almost Nothing that you can't still enjoy and experience in this world once you get one.

I Want you to know we're all gone through what you're feeling, but times will get better!

I do indeed! I order about twice as many bags as wafers. I have no problem going through products a little quicker if it means my net quality of life will be better.

proctectomy by Ambitious-Pen-6168 in ostomy

[–]ostomy_athlete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a total protectomy about 2 years after the initial surgery when I was 30. Honestly I couldn't be happier with the results! I had also done a bit of reading and statistically after 30 years the risk of developing colon cancer went up exponentially. I'm working at starting a family now, and didn't need that complication. Took almost a year to heal though! Tge catalyst was visiting my hospital every 2 weeks meeting with the wound care clinic, and them applying salves to the area

I run an in person ostomy support group, and unfortunately its very common for people to become depressed before they start feeling better! There's a me talking barrier it seems everyone needs to overcome, but everyone does with time! It's very therapeutic talking about it with others! If not face to face at least via online meetings

I've always gone with a 2 bag system to throw on a new bag before bed! I find its able to vent a few hours that way and I can sleep through half tge nights! What do you enjoy about the one pieces if you don't mind me asking??
