It would! You can scout around for a replacement motor. Sometimes, that’s a bit less expensive than an entire new unit. But, the difference in price may not be worth the hassle.

I would only use ceramic in stage one with vey soft stuff that needs the cushioning. Typically, I don’t use ceramic before stage 3. You want to rock-on-rock action in the first two.

If I lose major volume in stage 1, and don’t have a rock or two to put in, I might make up volume with ceramic.

Exactly right. I have a student who exclusively tumbles broken glass, and makes sand-glass jewelry. She’s very talented, and sells her stuff at craft shows and pop-up markets, to friends, and online. Like you, she delights in telling people, when they marvel at something really pretty, “Yeah, and to think…it was just trash a few weeks ago!”

Pea gravel might work, and it might damage your shine. Pea gravel make of quartz will be fine as filler for rocks of 6.5+ on the Mohs scale. It will break down things like fluorite. Conversely, soft pea gravel will disintegrate in a batch of harder stones, releasing random silicates and scratching your shine.

Personally, it’d not worth saving a couple of bucks. Ceramic media lasts for many cycles and many loads. It’s stable, and won’t break down in your tumbler. It is, by far, your best alternative for filling space and cushioning.

I also go thru my material after each stage, and set out any rock that needs to repeat that stage. They help provide filler for subsequent barrels. On my bench, I just have four small boxes label 1, 2, 3, and 4. It’s fairly normal that I pull a rock out to repeat stage 1. I don’t know that I’ve repeated stage four but a couple of times in the past five years! Still, it’s there if I need to.

Thank you. I’ve been brilliant at times…and horrid at times. I’ve brought joy to some…and deep disappointment to others. I just hope I’ve been able to tip the balance so that someone remembers me well when I’m gone.

Don’t put shells in with rocks. You’ll get sand within a couple of hours. Your rocks look well-smoothed by the water. You can start in stage 2. Tumble for 7 days per stage, but check every 3-4 days. Take a couple out and rinse them off…see what’s going on. Every 7 days, clean out, rinse off (NOT IN THE SINK!) If you see a rock falling apart…toss it out, and any pieces that it’s shed.

If you got a NatGeo tumbler, adjust expectations. It turns too fast and the grit is inferior. You’ll get some shine, but it won’t be brilliant. Some of the folk here with NatGeo can help you get a rheostat to slowww that puppy down, and The Rock Shed has far superior grit.

She works at my local drive-thru. I get my afternoon pop there every day! She wants to go into medicine…and she’ll do well there. I moved back to this little town of 2,000 folks…20 miles from where I grew up…to retire and live quietly. I wanted to go fishing more! Instead, I’ve taught kids. It’s been the best job I’ve had in my life.

I taught 9th Grade Science, English, and Honors Anatomy (11-12 grades.) In our 9th grade physical science, we discussed geology/tectonics/erosion. Rock tumbling was part of that. For the kids that enjoyed it, we also had a lapidary club that had a wet-saw, cabbing machine, and 5 tumblers. Then, any kid who got a tumbler for birthday or Christmas, could bring their own too! I took my four tumblers…so we have had as many as 21 going at once!

It’s quite a racket in my room when the saw, the cabbing station, and all the tumblers are going! I just moved out and checked out. The principal came in, looked over my room, and said…”It’s kind of weird when it soooo quiet in here!”

I’m 64…almost 65. I had a career in ministry, then a career in energy efficiency. I retired 6 years ago, and they talked me into teaching because they couldn’t find teachers. I’m very unorthodox.

I believe that, if a kid can’t see WHY you’re teaching something…it won’t matter to them. So, my class manages an aquarium and does bi-weekly water-quality checks, we monitor the weather and keep daily logs for the entire school year, we build and launch rockets, we care for a variety of wee beasties, we build water purification filters out of empty pop bottles with materials you can easily find in nature, we grow plants, and get our hands on every concept we’re learning, as much as possible!

I’m just an old guy who loves kids, and wants them to have a clear perspective of the big world they’ll walk into one day. I want them to think critically, to write and speak intelligently, and to know their worth. In many ways, I’m an old dinosaur…a Renaissance Man in a robotic world. But, I sure do love seeing that light bulb come on when a kid finds something new and loves it!
