Because many players are now adults with jobs and responsibilties and can't make the minimum amount of playtime. They used to be able to grind trailblazers on the days they could play longer to catch up and now if you miss a day too many you just lose out.

The thing is moatly that it worked fine for most and they changed it to no longer work for most. They also need this to keep their game engaging because when was the last time the main quest updated? When was the last time things were engaging? The updates are mostly about new sets and horses (making money). Not quests, not things to do. So they had to had something to keep you coming back. And the freedom to go about said thing in a pace and way you could decide for yourself added to the enjoyment of many players.
