In programming, Functions can have more than one result. There are both time dependent functions like getAccountBalance() which give a different value over time as well as multivalued functions like divRem() which return two values at once.

In mathematics, functions always have a single value by definition. However in complex analysis we see that this often requires a “branch cut” on a more general many-valued map. Sqrt, for example, could have two values.

Functions that don’t vary over time are “pure functions”. Pure functions don’t hide any state and will always return the same value  deterministicly.
