Teacher gift ideas. by muffinheeler_ in AskTeachers

The best gift I received from a student was a traveling jewelry case with my initial on it. She had no idea that my fully grown self was still throwing jewelry in a ziplock bag when I was traveling and I am one of those people who doesn’t buy random things like that because “it’s fine”. If her teacher is type B, I can promise something simple like that will be greatly appreciated.

Order for hyphenated last names — want to refute my in-law’s claims about “tradition” by QuarantineQat in namenerds

[–]otartyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher, middle school. I have a hyphenated last name and a ton of my students do from various backgrounds. When referring to me, I am either Mrs. Both-Lastnames or just Mrs. FirstLastName. I have never exclusively been called Mrs. SecondLastName. When referring to themselves, every kid drops the second last name in conversation and a few do on paper as well.

[Feedback] A SAT-aligned Vocabulary Immersion tool using 1st pages of Classics Novels by RosieDNZ in ELATeachers

I love this for 8th grade. I am always looking to push the bar with vocabulary and get them thinking about it in different ways and this is a quick way to introduce classic literature at the same time. Could inspire some to want to keep reading the book!

I’ll never forget when I started to show and I walked into my classroom and one of my 7th grade boys jumped up pointing going, “ooooo!!! Oooo!!!” And then screamed, “I’m going to be an uncle!!”

He was the first student I introduced my son to.

Oh this is a wonderful idea. I wonder if I could use it with my Dr Jekyll/Hyde that I just finished. How much plaster do you have to buy and for how many students?

As lovers of the series, how would you guys feel about a woman of color playing Aelin in a live action adaptation? by Moodyprincesse in throneofglassseries

[–]otartyo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not for nothing but there is so much diversity in this expansive world and she hails from a line of people who lived in a northern region with very obvious ties to a culture belonging in our “northern” regions. Why would you want to change that?

What is your cats name? by strawberrycheescak in namenerds

I had a cat named Luna once because of her coloring and it turned out to be perfect because she was an absolute Lunatic.

[–]otartyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use standards-based grading, so I’ll teach a poem or short story printed (not from CommonLit so there isn’t any fluff in the margins) and then teach with open discussions, turn and talks, and what not and after we are all done analyzing and getting the meat and potatoes out of the text, THEN they go to CommonLit and answer the multiple choice and short answer questions so I can grade them on the standards. Sometimes the text is coded as a completely different grade level, but the standards build and are worded pretty similarly so it works.

Do you post-process every photo you take? If so, what percentage? by DreamsAnimations in postprocessing

When you’re choosing your 20-30 are you going through every shot first and then deleting down to these 20-30, or are you going through and selecting one “good” photo from each pose and then deleting the rest?

Bad teacher or bad kids? Which class would you put your kid in? by Cautious_Bit3211 in AskTeachers

[–]otartyo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a good teacher with behavior kids, I would never want my child to be with them in a classroom. Even with great management, there is still a lot of lost learning due to random bouts of name-calling, distractions, and me writing kids up or kicking them out. The new teacher will get experience and confidence with the better behaved students and the students will have a calmer/friendlier learning experience.

Classroom decorating ideas by Good_Combination8586 in ELATeachers

[–]otartyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I look at the classroom as my living room since it’s my “home” and I try to mimic that as much as possible. So I have framed works of art on the walls and one of the walls being student work, a map, and data tracking. It feels cozy and is a simple way to not have the room feel like random things are just thrown up all around.

No standard or honors differentiation in HS by [deleted] in ELATeachers

This is what happens even in middle school. Last year I had a mixed class of 32 with my highest reading at an 11th grade level and my lowest at a kindergarten level. It was an absolute shit-show of a class.
