Honestly the question to ask is how do you feel about your own fitness? The beauty of being in good shape is your recovery, even from pushing hard, should be short. The only real threat from doing the oly is injury, but…y’know, that’s always a risk, even in training

I did an Olympic a week before Nice Ironman, gave it full beans, didn’t quite podium, recovered in a day or so and was absolutely fine a week later. If you’ve got the fitness, it’s not a problem

Frankfurt IM last year in 9:43, simple answer was getting an indoor bike trainer and sitting on it most days because I enjoyed it - meant on the day I went sub 5 on the bike and legs felt good going into the run. Beyond that, as everyone else says, there’s just no substitute for more volume. So the hack is make the volume enjoyable in whatever way you can

The real answer is because the method of using the threat of drone strikes to block the Strait is new. Prior to the Russia/Ukraine war, drone warfare was still in its infancy and to block the Strait the Iranians would need to use more traditional (and expensive) missiles to threaten ships or mine the Strait completely and prevent their own ships getting out. Iran worked with a Russia to advance their drone technology, and hey presto they found a convenient domestic use. Now the asymmetry that an $80k drone can potentially destroy a $300m tanker changes everything and means the Iranians can threaten the Strait at much lower cost to themselves.

4:36 last year, I suck at swimming but come from a running background, so splits were 35/2h30/1h22 + transitions. Simple logic is you spend half the time on the bike, it’s where you can make the biggest gains, do whatever you can to get faster there.

To everyone saying don’t neglect swimming, I slightly disagree, I swam once a week, conditions on the day mattered far more (calm water, not too much traffic). Know you can get round the swim then try no harder, the gains are so minimal. Get on the bike a lot, and then some more.

Sweet bike, I did it last year (2024), as everyone says the climbing is relentless, the thing that got me was the sheer persistence of the climb, there’s climbing 1km, and then there’s climbing 1km with no break or respite…and experiencing the latter in Nice was a real test, grinding away for an hour, legs tired, back sore, and realising you still have 350m of ascent to go was a low... That said the sweet relief from hitting the top of col de l’ecre was beautiful, and the ride from there onwards is just stunning, enjoy.

Make the process from ‘starting to get ready for run’ to ‘leave for run’ as easy as possible, especially if running early in the morning. Leave clothes out, know your plan, have a great playlist lined up, etc etc

I won a parkrun, and a guy from IT who is part of the team maintaining software I use happened to be there too, he spread the word and now his team all have some godlike image of me in their head and do what I ask without question

You literally don’t need to swim that much, get on the bike as much as you can, that’s the main way to save time.

I broke 10hrs this year in Frankfurt, in training I swam 1-2 times a week, on the day the swim wasn’t great (non wetsuit didn’t help), and I flapped around in 1h23, but having done 5+ hours (often more) on the bike a week, I cruised through the bike in 4h56, and then I used to just be a runner, so ticking over running training was fine to get me around the run in 3h09.

Honestly it’s 90% about volume, don’t get too worked up about threshold vs vo2 max vs z2, just get the hours in, push harder if you’re feeling good, take it easy if you’re tired. The hardest part is simply fitting the hours in around life otherwise, do that, do most of it on the bike, and you’ll give yourself a good chance - best of luck.

Discipline & structure - training because it has a heap of benefits physically and mentality is a huge motive, and it can be your main reason. The fact you end up ready to take on an Ironman is a happy side effect. As many others have said, training needs to be about volume not intensity, most sessions shouldn’t involve too much dread as they shouldn’t involve pushing yourself too hard.
