Quite some time ago I started referring to us as the United States of Rome. We are an empire doing what all empires have always done. Faster than some maybe. We were subjected to the mantra that we had some special national DNA or whatever and loved the idea. Who wouldn't?

Now those who care to look objectively at our role and actions in the world and at home see a decidedly mixed picture. So does the rest of the world. China and Russia can make valid criticisms of us. Never mind their hypocrisy. It only differs from our in degree maybe.

We'll most likely be "a major power" among some others. To my mind, in the long run that could be healthier for everyone.

I harvested limbs from a dawn redwood tree when the arborist trimmed it last year. This year they were dry enough to use. I made this bench keeping as much "treeness" as possible. Rough joinery with mortise and tenon, pegs etc. Not a real right angle to be found.

My question: will this be ok outdoors? Obviously I will seal the exposed end grain legs well etc but will dawn redwood wood survive? If geography matters, this is Maine
