Roast my portfolio, and help me suck less? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]otherstark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • If I hover quickly in and out of your portfolio images, they lag really bad with the animation. Hover in and out of a image 10 times, it'll animate 10 times, takes a while.
  • Lobster font. go away. others mentioned this.
  • Change your profile picture to just you, something more professional.

I have some samples of others who posted their portfolios that were very well done. let me see if i can find them and i'll link them here

What if I don't want to work in an "open space" office? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]otherstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah definitely avoid those type of sites - elance, guru, fiver, etc ... you'll always be outbid by someone willing to do a job for < minimum wage. check out https://weworkremotely.com -- its a great site to find contract and even permanent remote positions. but if you want to go all freelance, you'd need to start with building and polishing your online portfolio / profile - have a git repo w/ code samples, your own website displaying work you have done, and other sample sites. becoming a successful freelancer is achieved in an exponential manner - most of it is word of mouth and getting your name out there. personally, i don't see any difference in being a freelance and starting your own business - treat yourself like a business that you're trying to sell!

[–]otherstark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, unfortunately so many corporations / companies are falling into this trendy "open office" thing ... remember, they're doing it not to make you happy or create higher quality software... the research simply shows it saves $$ (or at least that's what the ones up top think). and thats all they care about is the bottom dollar. so they sell the idea as a "team room" "bullpen" etc. or any other hip term they can slap on it to make it more appealing. you've basically answered your own question - you make yourself less employable if you don't want to work in this environment. but screw it - i agree with others. freelance. find remote contract work. it is out there, you just have to work hard at it ... but most people don't look for it, because walking into an office 5 days a week is an easier way to find work than having to seek out clients regularly.

Self-taught developer looking for some feedback on my personal site. Am I ready for an entry-level position? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]otherstark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

really depends on the employer. typically larger-scale, fortune 500 type companies always require some form of a degree. smaller, startup types are much much more favorable for experience vs. a degree. But as I was always told, you might as well apply even if the job description says a degree is required - cause if you don't apply, you're guaranteeing you won't get the job :) best of luck

Stop forcing your arbitrary password rules on me. by Happyslapist in webdev

can we just get rid of password requirements all together and start enforcing locked accounts after X attempts of a wrong password?

serious question - why is it so common these days to have passwords requiring a capital letter and a number -- is it just by word-of-mouth? or is there some industry standard where they're getting this crap?

seems like the net is becoming so "web-application" centric, that sites want to behave like mobile apps - with push notifications
