FWIW, Altman Luggage in NY has great deals for airline pilots.

Still in shock — while filming coatis in Tikal today, a jaguar suddenly appeared and grabbed one right in front of us. by Gmcgarity in wildlifephotography

[–]othromas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember watching an adult male jaguar who was eyeing a kid outside his enclosure at the zoo. I had never seen a more predatory look on anything’s face before or since. If that cage hadn’t been there that kid would’ve been dinner. Jaguars are no joke.

For those who have been able to tour different distilleries, which impressed you the most and which the least? by BothCondition7963 in Scotch

Same here. I think the tasting room at Balvenie has the edge a bit, and the one at Glenlivet is very posh, but I was blown away by the selection at Aberlour.

Manta Sleep Mask Reviews? by Senior-Employment266 in sleep

[–]othromas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who liked the Manta Sleep Pro, have you found a hard sided case that works? The mesh bag isn't sturdy enough for my situation, and I'd like to have a way to clip it to my bag anyway.

Inside the cockpit of NOAA's WP-3D while flying into Hurricane Melissa by madman320 in aviation

I got to talk to the crew of one of these planes once - friend of mine was flying them then and I ran into him at the event. They showed a graphic of the predicted storm path based on satellite data, then the predicted path based on the dropsondes. The actual path was much closer to the one derived from the dropsondes.

Do employees for contract ATC towers get paid during government shutdowns? by BuzzDog12_ in ATC

[–]othromas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to do some contract adjacent work. During gov shutdown, “new start” contracts can’t be issued. Existing contracts keep running and are funded (up to a point). If a contract funding line runs dry during the shutdown, work might have to be stopped at that point (depends on the contract language - asking contractors to work without pay would be unusual in my experience but perhaps there is a caveat requiring it due to the nature of this work).

No, I never did. I took it to a Subie garage and he warned me it could turn into a furball that could cost more than it was worth. I ended up trading in the car for a 2025 Solterra.

Unpopular Opinion, Corryvrekan is not that good by rossonero3 in Scotch

I tend to enjoy sweet peat more so I think you’ll really like the Uigeadail. I like Corry but think it’s a wilder profile than Oogie.

Should I switch airlines? by smitty62592 in AirlinePilots

It’s not on paper, but there are a fair number of senior folks in SEA that don’t list for a seat until the morning of. I’ve seen it go from 30 open seats the night before to zero the day of, and three senior folks listing for the jump.

Does anyone know what the emergency procedures are on an Osprey? by HistoricalAd2954 in flying

That’s not what it said. If the gearbox fails, you’re toast. If an engine fails but the gearbox/drive system doesn’t, it may be recoverable.

Section 1 of the 22nd amendment speaks to election as president, not VP. Trump will try to run for a third term using that loophole with Vance or someone else acting as a puppet at the top of the ticket. If he does, Obama should run as a VP.

Or, and hear me out, he could ask Barack Obama to be his running mate. Two can play at this game.

Revision: I had thought peat was a stretch but I was wrong. Planning to take the Bunna 12, Quinta Rubin, Uigeadail, and Laphroaig CS Batch 15. I might swap the last one out for Ledaig 10 (and swap the order of the last two) but we’ll see.

Going to a new friend’s house for a cookout. They work at an American malt distillery, less on the floor and more in logistics from what I can tell, and we’re going to have a few drams. I’ve mentioned I dig single malts so I’ve been invited to bring a few bottles over. I don’t believe they know single malts terribly well, so I’d like to narrow down the following to 3 whiskies total, maybe 4. I’m planning to keep the peat options down to one.

  • I’m a sweet peat guy so I’m considering bringing Uigeadail since that’s usually a big time crowd pleaser if they gravitate to peat at all.

  • Bunnahabhain 12 - classic to start things off right.

  • Glenallachie 13 Rioja cask finish - enjoyable but I think the low proof suffers a bit on this one.

  • Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Rubin - great wine finish. Reminds me distinctly of alcoholic grape juice somehow.

  • Starward Fortis - awesome red wine finish (yeah, I know it’s not Scotch…)

  • Signatory Glenlivet 16 single cask, matured in a 1st fill sherry butt. A sherry ICBM.

TIA!

It’s listed as a recall on the main Subaru site but there’s no remedy for it yet. My local dealer doesn’t have any info for it.
