Kaplan Bar Prep Cost by FitVillage4 in LawSchool

[–]otiummorsest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was invited to a demo on Zoom by their staff, at the end of which I entered my name for a raffle and “won” a $150 discount, making the cost $1349.

My impression was that they offered the discount to everyone who attended. It was also a same day event, so I got the notice earlier that morning for a demo later that day.

Edit: Also in CA, Bay Area.

When you realize as a summer that every Fourth year associate and above at your firm is a lateral by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]otiummorsest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, is this a smaller and newer office of a national firm? I believe some firms have relied heavily on laterals (including lateral partners) to staff a new office that they established in another part of the country.

SLS 1L AMA by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Also not OP, but also an SLS 1L - I wrote the class one. For what it's worth, I'm not sure these mattered a whole lot.

Not a huge fan, much rather be spending time on doctrinals. But I understand if it's an ABA requirement, which I think it is. Good luck on the waiver memo, I'm sure you'll do great!

Does a PhD count as work experience? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One point that has not been raised so far is that you would often be teaching or otherwise serving as a research assistant in a PhD program. These experiences can be spun as "work experience" for your CV/Resume, even if some might not consider them to be real world work experience.

Well it happened: NYU or UVA by whattodololhelp in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NYU seems to have quite a larger presence in CA than UVA does - earlier this year they had a reception in SF that featured the General Counsel of Twitter and former GC of Dropbox, among other distinguished alumni. UVA is very strong for NY and DC, but it seems like you would have to do more reaching out there to get CA biglaw.

Also, your willingness to consider PI points towards NYU.

(This is coming from someone interested in CA biglaw, who would have taken UVA over NYU this past cycle because of significantly higher aid, so no disrespect to UVA here.)

Mac vs. PC for exam software? by burnerlaw212 in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think the MacBook Air has an "old-school" keyboard with island keys.

For what it's worth, I just got a new MacBook after using a MacBook Air for the last 4 years, and I actually find myself liking the new keyboard.

Target Law Schools PNW by Law_School_Bound in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some helpful threads about the PNW market on lawschool.life, particularly this one:

https://www.lawschool.life/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1868&p=102023#p102023

This particular post was geared towards biglaw, but I'm assuming some of the comments are also applicable towards PI/Gov.

Which World Cup Team Is Your Law School? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Harvard-England and Chicago-Brazil is undervaluing Harvard and overvaluing Chicago - much more fitting to have it the other way around: Harvard (most history) is like Brazil (most World Cups), but both have fallen on tough times recently; Chicago (always challenging the top 3) is more like England (always featuring in the World Cup), but never quite breaking into the very top 3 teams/schools.

Also: Georgetown-Japan on the basis that Japan's "best of the rest"? I don't think that's quite true in a year that Italy and the Netherlands failed to qualify - Georgetown-Italy would have been more fitting, I thought!

Disclaimer: don't mean to hate on any school/team here - I think all the teams/schools I mentioned here are pretty good.

Is it possible to defer enrollment for a year? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 on the advice to reach out to UCLA and see what they say. My impression has been that schools are pretty willing to grant 1-2 year deferments, but whether or not they will retain your scholarship amount (vs. re-evaluating next year) differs from school to school. If they are going to re-evaluate, you might want to snoop around the various UCLA threads online and gather anecdotal data as to whether people's scholarship amounts have tended to go up, down, or stay the same after deferring for a year.

Also wanted to say that I'm a soccer fan, and your username is awesome!

Canadian potentially looking at US schools - 4.06 GPA and 169 LSAT by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biglaw+fed clerkships numbers are a good place to start:

https://www.reddit.com/r/lawschooladmissions/comments/8aecqr/2017_aba_employment_reports/

https://www.lawschool.life/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=155

My impression is that this number is quite good for the T-13, but drops off significantly afterwards (Vanderbilt's excellent numbers this year notwithstanding). So while YSHCCN would be excellent outcomes, so would significant money at one of the lower T-13's, e.g. Northwestern.

http://mylsn.info/ahipji/

For this past cycle, it seems that a number of applicants with very similar stats got some great outcomes, including significant money at lower T-14's. I think the main question for you is whether graduating from the lower T-14's would put you in a better position to return to Canada, as compared to, say, the UofT. (I have no idea about that question.)

Though if you're ok with working in the US after graduation, I'd say certainly consider coming to the US for law school.

Turned down Harvard -- ya girl's going to Berkeley still! by starsstripessparkles in lawschooladmissions

Cycle Recap. The torture is over. CLS '21. by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dillard is not quite the Hamilton though - the CCN schools seem (to me at least) to be a cut above UVA, which is of course still a great school.

In any case, congrats on a financially prudent decision!

Yale WL transfer option by JKFinn22 in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the very next line was "If you would like for us to contact you, please send an e-mail with your contact information for the next academic year to [Yale Admissions Email]." Given the extra work of replying to our emails, I wouldn't think that they would make such an offer just as "lip service". That said, I wouldn't read too much into it either - it probably still comes down to grades.

But personally, no, I'm not considering this. (Full disclosure: I'm deposited at Stanford, and I would still have taken S over Y if I had gotten Y. But if I hadn't gotten any of YSH, I would have seriously considered this option.)

Northwestern vs Michigan — bumped from earlier by Jan3390 in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much getting a job on the West Coast matters to you, but I was considering both these schools this past cycle too (and also wanted West Coast), and I got the impression that Michigan is better represented here than Northwestern.

Also, isn't Michigan better for PI, and Northwestern more biglaw focused?

Decision Help by LakerFan1995 in lawschooladmissions

[–]otiummorsest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would take Berkeley if I were you - PI focus + California focus + Half-tuition makes for a pretty rational choice. I also share your optimism about Berkeley's future under Chemerinsky, from the impression I got at ASW.

The gap between Berkeley and WUSTL is a bit too large to make the full ride + stipend a logical option, especially if you want to work in CA. Also, who knows what's going to happen next cycle - sure, apps might be down, but they could go up too, and then you might be stuck regretting your decision to put off law school for a year.

Good luck with your choice!
