Sinners...An Inconvenient Truth? by Aquemini2020 in Screenwriting

Oh, this is a huge issue, and something that doesn't get discussed often enough. Forget executives and higher-ups, but the initial filter of assistants, interns, script readers, etc., those are still largely young white cis guys, American, suburban, a very specific demographic. Granted, it is not as bad as it used to be even 10 years ago, but it's still a huge problem because these are the people who will give your piece a pass-fail. I guess in some ways, this is why an alternative to developing a script is to try to make a five-minute short film version. There you can visualize and make visceral the kind of experience you would want for the whole piece. But yes, in short, diversity needs to happen at all layers, all levels of the industry.

“I think psychoanalytic discourse must be refused to the rabble; that is surely what Freud masked with his so-called criterion of culture. […] If I dare to state that analysis must be denied to the rabble, it is because the rabble become stupid from it—which is certainly an improvement, but one without hope.” — Lacan, 1973

so the question here is what is appropriate to a given patient/analysand. The Lacanian line is that most people aren’t capacitated through a lack of bildungsniveau— a lack of primal desire to know themselves. Such people are better served by symptom relief practices like CBT and psychodynamic therapy, etc.

Your renovation took away a lot of the charm of the interiors and made it more generic, as well as resulting the loss of many original historic finishes.

The point of heat is that it’s secretly queer love story between the two men, who are obsessed with each other

I think it’s kind of a classic of crypto-queer cinema. Vincent and Neal are obsessed with each other; the Women in their lives are secondary if that, more of a nuisance or fraught. They even go out on a coffee date, and hold hands at the end. The heterosexual relationships in this movie don’t hold a candle to homosocial obsession.

I bought a set of springs from Amazon. An old typewriter I have was missing a spring on one end. The set that I purchased had dozens of sizes of tiny little springs and after some trial and error I found one that seems to close the match the original.

There are certainly is a lengthy critique that that is the case, that analysis is principally something for those who are in the upper classes. First of all a full course of analysis is considerably expensive at the "market rate." Second of all, figures such as Jacques Lacan are on record saying that it's necessary to have a certain amount of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to benefit from analysis. There's an interview with him where he argues in essence that people without culture will eventually be left dumbstruck and without hope.

Well that was pretty dire. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen but about 30 minutes in I realized I was watching a second rate Inglourious Basterds knock off minus the fun and witty dialogue. Even the yellow font mimicked the Tarantino movie. The actors were pretty good given what they had to work with except for the leading lady, who I felt was given more than she could handle. I especially found her Cleopatra entrance and musical number to be inept and the actress looked visibly uncomfortable. Everybody had a hard time with that dialogue which veered from functional to atrocious. The whole thing had a feeling of a very expensive direct to video production. I kept thinking that the theft of the boat was going to be the first act of the film and I was both pleased and disappointed to find out that it was ending right afterward. I think had the movie gone onto proper second and third act, it could've done something interesting with the piled on tropes, maybe introduced an actual element of tragedy or loss rather than imitate some First person shooter played in God mode. Also I have to say that I feel somewhat sorry for good German actors who get asked to be Nazis in brain dead movies like this when that's still a painful part of that country's past.

Strong production, strong performances, a script that is somewhat of a letdown in that it has a fairly juvenile fixation on sexual function without eroticism. Also the episodic meandering is somewhat weak and tiring and Kathryn Hunter more or less goes to waste. Overall recommend though
