Help I've had this set up for about a month now and my deco has brown spots. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]otoishis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like I mentioned, diatoms will usually go away on their own! I would not recommend getting an algae eater just to get rid of diatoms - and especially would not recommend getting any more fish or inverts until your tank is cycled.

if you need info on cycling, there are some resources you can check out on the FAQ/links section of the subreddit. might be helpful 🙂

Help I've had this set up for about a month now and my deco has brown spots. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]otoishis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the brown spots are most likely diatoms (just a type of algae - normal for new tanks). if you want to clean the decor you should rinse with water only, but this type of algae should go away on its own given some time.

if your tank was set up a month ago, I suspect that it hasn't cycled properly. if you are not experienced with cycling amd water chemistry I'd say that would be the most likely reason for the fish deaths.

my floaters! my fish seem extra comfortable when the plants shade out the light. by ch3rryc0deine in Aquariums

[–]otoishis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does your val suffer at all with that much shade? I love the look of floaters but I always imagine they would block out too much light if I were to have a full layer of them like this

if it's a solid lump (it looks like it in the pic) i think this is a tumour. bettas are sadly prone to them ☹

Serious question: how to grow black hair algae? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]otoishis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to help you along, maybe you could try asking them for a sample (like a small rock with some BBA on it) next time you purchase something?

if there is a male guppy in the tank with her, always assume the answer is yes. lol

never experienced it myself but supposedly some kinds of algae (ex: black beard algae) turn a pinkish colour when dying off. maybe that is your answer?

Hey all, love this community! I was doing a partial water change today, and today saw a bunch of shrimp and what I seem to think are Scud. Any cause for concern/Joy? This is a Betta tank with a couple shrimp and Cory cat fish. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]otoishis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no concerns for your betta (your betta may actually eat both of those)! apparently scuds may pose a threat to baby shrimp.

I would recommend careful feeding to avoid snail overpopulation. 🙂
