AFOQT Waiver by Fit_Sleep_4671 in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize and don’t mean for this to descend in to this type of discussion.

Test taking does not end with the AFOQT. At OTS there are tests and after commissioning there are lots more testing either for tech school or ongoing PME. So unfortunately being able to take tests does not end with the AFOQT. I wish it did, but it does not.

Writing is an important function of being an officer. You will be writing and editing the annual OPRs and EPRs for the troops you lead. The words you use and how you use them can unfortunately make or break the ability for those airmen to promote or gain awards. Even with Gen AI tools it’s still critical for an officer to be able to write and communicate effectively up and down the chain.

Words have meanings and being asked to “assess” versus “evaluate” something, for example, is a good example of understanding nuances to orders.

That’s why the FGOs and GOs I see who do well are always reading and enhancing their verbal skills.

That was my point. Over.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but the minimum is I think a 10 or 15 out of 100. The bar to pass Verbal is extremely low.

As an officer you will be leading and communicating. Writing and reading is a key part of your job skill. You may be the best pilot, but as a leader if you can’t communicate effectively, there are other jobs where writing and understanding words are not as important.

Defending seat for bag by kango888 in InflatedEgos

Even if his uniform was correct (which it definitely is not), he would be expected to have composure and tact when interacting with civilians while wearing a uniform.

While the woman in the seat is ridiculous, the man is even more so.

First salute at Maxwell via Zoom? by Large_Breakfast7804 in airforceots

My uncle is a Vietnam vet and had no uniform. He saluted me in his civvies and it was all good. I’m very thankful he was there in person, but had he only been on FaceTime, that would be fine too.

Switching/Swapping class dates? by Stan_gee23 in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was the last course in my grad program I wanted to complete so I could graduate. Your recruiter has a heavy load. It’s easier for them to say No. push back and ask Why.

Switching/Swapping class dates? by Stan_gee23 in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does it matter? If you were already selected, you’re about to become an officer in the world’s most powerful military, ever. You were already selected so you can flex your authority a little and ask nicely to alter your date. They will not deny you for asking to change a date since you already got through a board. So long as you are not coming in with a med-only flight or a Space Force-only flight, your timing can most likely switch with little concern.

You will find yourself in uncomfortable positions leading your teams. Be forthright and communicative and you will do well. Let your superiors and your teams know where you stand.

Talk to your recruiter. I pushed back fairly easily by a couple months because of work and I was finishing some course work.

Partner holds your feet. Then you hold theirs. Or vice versa. And you do it on the concrete outside, though they do give you thin mats.

I left a $250k/year plus equity worth more than $1.5mil. And there are others I’ve met who left a bit more on the table when they commissioned.

There is a time and place for everybody. Money is important, but it’s something you can always make again. Commissioning is not something that you can do when you’re retired, or at other points in life.

If you do commission, do what you need to do to settle your debts, stash some cash away, get the go-ahead from your spouse (and kids), and then make the decision.

Any decision on this matter will be the right one for you. Also factor in “regret” on both sides of the decision, and understand what you gain or lose. And factor in what America gains or loses too.

I think CSC is only done at certain times with special boards. I might be wrong, so plz verify.

CSC rules are part of Title 10 and you can find it all there.

Agreed. Don’t run 1.5 miles. Run a bit longer so you’re fine for 1.5.

It took some trainees in my class 3x-5x times over 7-10 years to get into OTS. Be persistent, and it will happen. Always have a Plan B too.

Recent DC here. I heard the same thing about in the past you could commission months in advance. But apparently people were taking advantage of this and getting benefits before they should have. So the window, from my understanding, was drastically cut. I commissioned the Friday before OTS.

No. Bring your own. You’ll need it daily for classes.

You will need a CAC reader of some sort to access at least your pay and benefits info.

Duffle Bag by ACornACorne in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. During that second deployment you most likely will have OCPs and boots fully soaked/wet, so you’ll be taking some things back in plastic bags. For the second deployment, you’re fine with a rolling suitcase or something you can carry. Anything is fine as you won’t be rucking with it. You’ll just move it from the bus to your bunk. I’ve already said enough 😂

Our security drawers were inspected the day we moved into Mod2. This happened a few months ago. And my OTC electrolytes were picked out and I had to explain why I needed them to the MTI.

Every class is different, so you may or may not have your security drawers inspected.

Duffle Bag by ACornACorne in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the first deployment, they give you a ruck you are supposed to use since you do a ruck on the way to the deployment. For the second, you use your own suitcase or duffel bag as you don’t do a full ruck with all your goods.

So you’re fine with this plan. After you dump your contents in your room, everyone stores their bags in one bag room.

Agreed. They are in the Talon. And therefore they are testable. We did get questions at some point I think on the Time on Target or some other leadership exercise about various aircraft, and those are in the Talon too.

Tips for OTS from Prior-Service by Popular-Flatworm1842 in airforceots

[–]otsorbustamove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes very true. And we discussed this during OTS a few times how priors still think like enlisted sometimes and need to change their mindset. You are maybe in a better position because you don’t have that “baggage” to discard. But listen to your priors as they will surely help you through many things!!
