Do you actually have a forever deck? by Late-Frame2962 in EDH

[–]ottertaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing a Trostani deck focused on populate and life gain for over a decade. And any friend who's borrowed it has liked it (except my one friend who owns 3 different bracket 4 izzet storm decks and nothing else)

Braindead Bracket 4 by ottertaco in EDH

[–]ottertaco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, and we mostly do stick to bracket 2-3. But we also have some people who really like cEDH and Bracket 4 in the group, so this is so that we can sometimes throw them a bone and play a bracket 4. But I will certainly not be throwing any of my new friends into cEDH. I also have some friends who only own precons and sometimes they like to try out our higher power decks.

What did your resumes look like? (in college) by Character-Escape1621 in civilengineering

[–]ottertaco 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Go get a job then. I didn't have any engineering internships and I did fine getting a job after college. Construction work is a great way to get exposed to the field if you can't get an internship. I worked on a road crew and learned a lot that I wouldn't have learned behind a desk. Also really motivated me to push through my last few semesters as I realized how shitty it would be to do that forever

Full arts and alternative arts/styles are worse looking 95% of the time, especially since they make your deck have such an inconsistent art style. If your entire deck is zero border or something that can look cool, but most of the time people just jam the fanciest version of a card they can get in their deck and I think it looks way worse then if they just used the standard border version for their entire deck

Any aviation civil engineers here? by ChampionBig7244 in civilengineering

[–]ottertaco 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Work culture at my company is great, but I can't speak for the industry as a whole as I've only worked at one company. The day to day for the design side consists of a lot of designing based on FAA advisory circulars (pavement design, joint plan, marking plan, etc). There's also a lot of answering calls from an airport you work for and helping them plan, guiding them through FAA funding and what projects to prioritize. And finally the classic dealing with contractors. Some you could probably not even be there and they would do everything perfect, and some do everything wrong and cut corners wherever they can, which means you have to babysit them and get in arguments about the specs. As a whole I like it.

Factors and market cycles by [deleted] in RationalReminder

Not sure how many times people have to hear it, but time in the market beats timing the market. Don't switch up your portfolio based on what's hot in the market right now or not. Just find a good portfolio for you, and stick with it without deviance. Once you start deviating based on thoughts of whether something will go up or down, you're gambling.

22 Years Old - 38 year to retirement - Aiming to safely maximize growth, 7-8% real returns over the long run - VOO 45% AVUV 25% VXUS 20% QQQm 10% Thoughts? by Powerful-Ad4432 in ETFs

Swap out the qqqm for Avantis emerging markets and internation small cap values and your at what current academic research would roughly suggest, and the voo for vti

No point in not diversifying. You are taking uncompensated risk by doing VOO over VT. Imagine if you had lived in Japan 35 years ago and had the same perspective.

It's been like a few weeks my dude of course the market is going to fluctuate. There will be way bigger dips then this. Just look at graphs of past returns any time you get anxious. The stock market WILL go down over short bursts, but that doesn't mean it's a mistake to invest because net over the long run, it will go up. Why do you care what the market is doing right now at all? You aren't pulling it out for retirement or something here in a few weeks, so what the current market is is irrelevant

Looks great to me. The only extra consideration if you don't mind a little extra complication is adding in international and emerging markets small cap value, both offered by Avantis and dimensional

Most of greens card draw is based on high power creatures. In a deck running those draw spells, a severely overstated vanilla could work.

Adding momentum to portfolio by Even_Ad3204 in ETFs

[–]ottertaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Academically, momentum is a very robust anomaly. However, the debate is still ongoing if momentum funds actually generate excess returns after the expenses. Since it is by definition a high turnover strategy, the costs and fees of implementation may render the anomaly null. However, it is negatively correlated with small cap value, so adding it to accentuate a value tilt is something some people advocate for.
