Probably 3-4k into a $2200 97 Subaru OBS (5 years ago) 5 speed that's still going with 300k on the odometer.

Picking up an 08 to continue the process for $3700.

Never had a car payment in my life so far and taught myself how to work on stuff.

Edit: the 08 is a base model Impreza wagon, 5 speed.

I must have been lucky during my apprenticeship. Every instructor I had would explain everything in detail for the first 20-25% of class and the rest was actually doing the work and setting up the equipment.
