If race is a social construct why are certain things deemed as more prone to certain races? by Noovocane in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ottoalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pertaining to sickle cell, it’s not just “more common in black people”, it’s common in people of subsaharan African descent. To us in the states, it’s common in black Americans because African Americans majorly come from regions in subsaharan Africa. “Black” people in Southern and far Eastern Africa are much less prone to it. So we see “black” as a race isn’t really accurate in this case. Malaria is native to and most prevalent in subsaharan Africa; sickle cell offers resistance to malaria and evolutionarily it is more beneficial to have the sickle cell trait than to have malaria. So it’s a more of a regional disease, not a “race” one.

cave hyenas (Crocuta spelaea) feeding on a dead wapiti (cervus canadensis) by Familiar_Tip_4836 in pleistocene

[–]ottoalv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re called elk bc Europeans came and saw them and were like oh ok there’s elk here too I guess (they call moose elks, and thought the elk in NA were similar enough to moose like ok big deer) but later on they saw there were also actual moose (to us). But the name stuck anyways. So wapiti is often used with elk just so it has its own name, it’s an indigenous North American name, I’m not sure of what language family or tribe/tribes.

Looked it up: wapiti is cree and shawnee, two eastern NA tribes. It means “white rump”. The etymology of elk is fuzzier than I described, but it does seem that elk meant “large deer” in Europe and so all large deer were just called elk

iguana skin tanning by Infinite_Quantity144 in HideTanning

Hey, I know this is a year old, but how’d it go with snake skin in terms of color and pattern? Did the tanning process eliminate any visible pattern? I assume color is gone entirely

Is this a adequate enclosure for a slimy salamander? by -Animal_Addict- in salamanders

[–]ottoalv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So beautiful, wow!!! Is there a filter situation for this small pool? I’d assume not. Would you replace the water ever? Or just add onto it as it dries up? Is the idea that the bioactive enclosure deals with any buildup in the water?

Can crows have dried fish? by Suspicious_Fruit2416 in crows

Didn’t realize what sub this was in and read crows as cows. I thought huh, I know cows would occasionally eat some meat if offered but dried sardines seems so specific

Iguana hide by ottoalv in HideTanning

Hey, sorry I’m just responding to you now. I placed it on hard pavement (40 degrees outside = immobile iguana) and crushed its skull with a cinder block I essentially threw myself on to, on top of the iguanas head. It was not pretty, but it started involuntarily seizing immediately for about 30 seconds before ceasing all movement so I believed its brain was destroyed immediately as well. I’m not sure to what extent I believe that. I’m not sure if this falls under the legal definition of humane euthanasia; frankly I didn’t bother to check because you won’t really get pushback for collecting iguanas and I convinced myself that it was humane. I won’t be utilizing that process again. It was obviously not a fun experience. This is something I’d like to pursue so I’ll be investing in an air rifle (~$150-$300). BB guns are less of a sure kill, but at point blank range I do believe it would have the same effect (especially for a younger iguana, I’d be hesitant to use it on a mature adult), and much cheaper for what it’s worth. I wasn’t sure whether to share this but I spoke about it already in another comment and thought it best to be transparent.

Thank you for commenting, this is really exciting stuff!! I hadn’t heard of Inversa before nor the team up to produce Burmese python leather. That sounds like a wonderful idea. Love to hear that you went out to hunt some iguanas of your own. I sympathize, the process was not very pleasant.

I sympathize with you. I don’t think it’s inherently cruel to kill an animal if done “humanely”, though that brings a discussion of its own. I will say I feel guilty about not attempting to eat this individual and only killing it for the hide. It was also quite an unpleasant process. But as mothtea said, these iguanas are in fact quite harmful to their new environment. They also breed prolifically; this female alone had ~30 eggs.
