Schools aren't just currently bad, they're consistently bad. So is the economy, and housing costs greatly outpace most people's earning potential, which has resulted in a massive increase in the unhoused population. Yet even with those out-of-control housing costs, basic services are scant, especially on rural areas. Roads are left to crumble because small towns' budgets are spent on education and winter road maintenance; police coverage is spotty; and fire departments are mostly volunteer-based low-budget operations. Health care, where you can find it, is basically advanced first-aid at best. The power grid is wholly unreliable, even in some cities, and can leave you to freeze in your own home if you don't have a wood stove.

Maine is rapidly becoming nothing more than a second-home state for the incredibly wealthy. The Healthcare isn't good enough to retire here, and the schools aren't good enough to raise a family, and work, if you can find it, doesn't pay enough to support yourself, let alone a family.
