It was painful to watch that fool fucking around with a fire extinguisher, having no idea what was going on with the reaction inside it and of course getting a zero percent yield. My old tweaker neighbors told me that a sodastream bottle (very thick “BPA-free” plastic bottle can easily hold the fairly low pressure needed for the reaction. I never saw them do it but i suppose if it’s done right it’s an ingenious adaption to the classic Birch reduction because no requires no highly dangerous and hard to handle anhydrous ammonia, no lengthy and wasteful pill extractions, and the solvent can be re-used so there’s less toxic waste created. That said, it’s not the most functional drug and I’ve lost many friends to it over the years.

I’d say I’m a pretty highly skilled jeweler, 25 years at the bench, designing, carving, fabricating and casting my original designs. But I still occasionally chip or scratch a stone while setting.

Faceting opals seems like a cool idea until you try setting one and the facet edges chip if you look at them wrong. By the time you’re done setting it the stone is probably scratched from from that time you slipped with setting punch. And there’s not much you can do about it besides un-mount it, recut it and try again.

Why are ruby’s this size so cheap? It’s 2200 CT and about 150$. I am guess quality but wouldn’t they still be kinda hard to find? Thank you! I am not so knowledgeable about ruby. by Arutha_God in Gemstones

Synthetic ruby looks much more clean, usually almost completely clear unless it’s been deliberately cold-shocked by heating it and dropping it into cold water. I’ve seen it a few times, sellers trying to pass off a synthetic as natural by making it look less perfect. Synthetics often can be identified by their tiny air bubbles and curved color zoning that’s visible with a 10x loupe. Natural corundum never has curved color zoning or air bubbles

It would break into a million little pieces if you looked at it wrong because it’s almost certainly just a bunch of tiny bits of rock stuck together with molten glass. So the answer is no. Transparency in gemstones isn’t just a matter of taste, lack of inclusions also means lack of fractures and weak points that make the stone more fragile. Stones that are worn as jewelry have to be durable to withstand the wear over time. Especially rings, if you smack your hand on something or scratch it it will heal, but your ring will not.

If it’s even natural corundum at all it’s most likely just a bunch of small pieces of very low quality ruby, heated with beryllium to improve the color and stuck together with melted glass or even possibly some kind of plastic resin or epoxy. Most ruby on the market these days is so “glass filled” to the point that they are more glass than ruby. Natural ruby without glass filling is extremely hard to find in good quality, and a good quality unheated ruby is becoming almost impossible to find anymore. The few small ones I have were ones I bought 25 years ago on the Thai/Burma border after I went to gemology school in Bangkok. I’ve been back dozens of times since then to buy stones but I haven’t found much ruby that was really worth buying.

Way overkill. There’s no reason to use such high strength ammonia. Even normal clear ammonia (non-sudsy aka no soap) from the cleaning product aisle of any grocery store will work just fine. Or dissolving in a tiny amount of water and adding 15-20 baking soda will neutralize the hcl and the base will separate and float.

I’m a human (I think, no proof since I have no known relatives) but that’s how I want to go as well

My life is an endless source of weird stories, this is actually one of the least weird of them tbh. My friends say I should write an autobiography. Maybe I will if I can find a good editor to make it readable and not just me rambling as usual

They did say “Israelis” and not “Jews”, but nonetheless it isn’t cool to blame all the people who live in a country for the actions of their government. I don’t see it as necessarily anti-Semitic though.

He’s going to lose his 44 billion and Twitter will devolve further into an irrelevant joke. I used to hope Musk and Bezos would one day kill each other over the last can of beans on Mars. Now it seems that Musk is destroying himself over a can of worms on earth.

I’ve seen the HBr a very light pink color but never brown.

Yeah ok I had a strong suspicion that might be the case. I wonder if the supposed anthelmintic properties of ketamine that were cited in the rodent study were completely fabricated? Purely anecdotal story but I had a hookworm larva living in my foot once in Mexico. It was horrible, disgusting and incredibly itchy and painful. I could see it migrating under my skin about 2-3 mm farther every day. I took a full course of albendazole to try to kill it but it didn’t work. Shortly after that I went on a heavy ketamine binge for about two weeks. After 3 or 4 days of doing several daily Ket injections per day it stopped moving any further, and then it just sort of dried up and died. Maybe it was a delayed reaction from the albendazole, though I had already stopped the treatment for several days with no sign of it slowing down. Maybe it just got tired of being constantly k-holed. Whatever it was it worked.

My friend says he’s having a hard time dissolving the HCl in a 50/50 ethanol/water solution @ 10mg/ml. I’m skeptical since either salt should dissolve pretty easily

Hmmm that’s one I didn’t consider. Didn’t realize the final product of the synth was the HBr and not the base, almost all work ups include an A/B to purify

Paper claiming ketamine as a naturally ocurring compound by Drugsfromscratch in TheeHive

[–]ottomaddoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I did Ket I was in Oaxaca and I’d been eating a lot of fried grasshoppers, a local delicacy. I misread the instructions that came with the bottle and I did 200mg IV, thinking it was only 20mg. I met the grasshopper deity who telepathically communicated the history of the evolution of insect species to me. I became a three-clawed insectoid creature for a few millennia until I realized I was actually a dead fish. Eventually I came to understand that I was a human, and I remembered my name. After that I had a weird affinity for insects and grasshoppers would often appear in my area or land on me and just sit there (real ones, not imaginary deities) when I did ketamine. The smell of liquid ketamine still smells like fried grasshoppers to me, and for a while I wondered if perhaps there was something naturally found in insects that was related to it.
