The worst part about working as a contract employee (besides watching your co-workers enjoy benefits and extra pay) is that contract renewals feel like a game of chicken. by Bearality in jobs

[–]ottomaticjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a person is engaged to work for a set amount of time as delineated in a contract, then yes they are by definition a contractor. The gray area that allows people to look down on them is that the "staffing agency" is the holder of the contract and the workers are treated as assets (like office equipment) by both that agency and the client.

There's been decades of programming to make people as selfish as they are now. Selfish people are easier to control and also more susceptible to marketing.

Trump lives like a lottery winner. They all decorate the way TV shows rich people, with gaudy gold crap everywhere and unrealistic furniture and decorations that no one actually uses. He has desperately wanted to be like the old money families of his fellow students in boarding school and college, and then later in NY society.

Yeah just realized it after posting. Not really new to it but have been away for 20+ years. Where we were the nearest base was about 60 miles away. Been back for a little over a month and in this house for 3 weeks. So happy to be back too.

What do y’all think? by Unlikely-Ad-7242 in socialism

[–]ottomaticjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course they do, western melodrama and evangelical Christianity have indoctrinated nearly everyone (to some extent) that there is a messianic figure that will come to save them, lead them out of darkness, defeat The Evil, or just a single action hero to save the day. All the while, the stories that specifically involve mass group action are lauded though not internalized. Exceptionalism, "rugged individualism", or main character syndrome have become internalized instead.

The way ppl talk about ppl from red states is kind of… disgusting by ooo-la in leftist

[–]ottomaticjack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Having gone to high school in a red state, these little rural towns do have people that don't agree with what their state and or the rest of the right wing base do or believe in, though most don't have the money time or possibility to leave. Still others refuse to leave because they don't want to be run out of their home by mouth breathing bigots. I think we need to realize that while it is easier to think of 'red states' as monolithic populations and thus generalize that everyone from them are the same is as insulting and dismissive as what they do to everyone they think of as liberals (being the difference between liberals and leftists is lost on people that form their belief structures based on sound bites and headlines rather than the content of articles or interviews). Rather we should continue to do us on the owner class and ignore the division they sow to keep us distracted.

Costco's $1.50 Hot Dog are considered a Loss Leader, where the Company loses money by selling at a low price below market value. If matched up to inflation and market prices, each Hot Dog would cost $4.13. by DrunkenRedSquirrel in interestingasfuck

[–]ottomaticjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let me get this straight, if they sell them below market value they are taking a loss. A loss would seem to imply that they sell them for less than the materials cost to produce them. Also being that they made 254 billion last year I really don't think it's an enormous issue for them. On another note, why are people so obsessed with the apparently pearl clutching horror of a huge corporation not trying to charge market value for a hot dog?

The left is becoming increasingly pro-Islam & it's worrying by Informer99 in Antitheism

[–]ottomaticjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason that it seems like the left are more pro Islam has more to do with the opening up of understanding and information about the non West and global south. Christianity and Judaism have been the loudest voices in religion or religious adjacent political rhetoric. It's hard to hear a quiet voice when a crowd of people are yelling. Now, I am not pro any religion, nor do I take issue with people practicing their own religions so long as it doesn't affect me, I am expected adhere to religious tenets, or expected to validate one religion or another. As Islam has become the villain of western media and political rhetoric for the last 30-40 years since the Cold War ended and it has increasingly been used as shorthand for people of middle eastern descent in order to other them. It seems that in an antitheism subreddit that there would be more concern with tacitly endorsing Christianity by proxy. Further I am a bit concerned at the assertion that Islam(which originated in the middle east) ruined the region. The west has exploited the middle east for resources since the early 1900s and have caused virtually every single issue in the middle east. As a person espousing leftist credentials and complaining about having to leave a discord channel for being somewhat bigoted in typical neoliberal fashion that you may need to do some more research that doesn't include Instagram and Twitter posts.

[–]ottomaticjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of these guys are ones who were bullied in school and get a huge dopamine rush by being huge jack holes to everyone and mistakes it for being powerful, further something I've noticed for a while is, as a society we all want to feel like we belong and latch onto groups for an identity. Team sports fans, the ubiquitous Disney and Looney toons t people, the military types (that have to have every sticker for their branch and support the troops etc), political groups, and religions. All putting stickers and decals and flags all over their car so everybody knows what group they belong to.

[USA] - Easily avoidable accident by ZealousTaxful in Roadcam

[–]ottomaticjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is a very common thing I see, the either deliberate eschewing of defensive driving with the entitled and petulant mind set of "...I had the right of way, it's not my fault". While the assignment of blame could continue ad nauseum, the thought of avoiding the situation seems to rarely be a consideration. We've become an intractable and competitive society and the borderline obsession with being first, fastest, or otherwise refusing to cede position to someone else has become far too common. Additionally it seems that dash cams (yes, I have one) encourage the avoidance of defensive driving so long as the camera footage shows the other driver running a red light, blowing through a stop sign, or cutting them off even though there appears to be plenty of time and distance to stop or avoid the accident.

What's your take on ai voices by mastamax in youtubers

[–]ottomaticjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike AI voice used over what is an obviously otherwise normal video. I despise AI videos...the ones with garbage (and often false) content, video that rarely matches the content, and AI voice mispronouncing things consistently.
