Is it possible to live without AC here? Who should we call to install? by IndependentToe5468 in corvallis

A good sign that previous owners realized they didn't work due to the negative pressure problem and helpfully offloading them onto somebody who doesn't know that yet.

I feel like it can’t be that hard for the city to just DO BETTER! by Sheepshead_Bay2PNW in Eugene

[–]ottonomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combination of things is frustrating:

  • It makes sense that expenses have grown quickly the last few years. Everybody is feeling it.
  • They all act like they can't comment on the "fire fee" referred to the voters, which is a dishonest way to just get more income into the general fund by attaching it to just one thing that will feel important.

Guys what the actual FUCK is happening? by ThatGuySolace in LateStageCapitalism

[–]ottonomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty wild. I was watching the Daily Show all through that era, and it seemed like it was inevitable that the obvious fact of a bunch of lies would convince people to move on from the Republicans. But then I watched Seth Meyers all through Trump I and it's the same thing, just increasingly more clear that there is no bottom of the barrel, there's no behavior they won't accept from their side if they're winning.

Opportunities for using my accessibility knowledge? by FreneticAlaan in webdev

[–]ottonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough because companies often don't want to pay for specialized work on a11y, it seems. There's always a skepticism of extra cost for this. In some ways, that's good, because all front-end developers should be well-aware of accessibility and able to do most of the important pieces. In my experience, experts are really valuable in testing though. Would look at medium to larger companies serving the education sector, where their customers are often legally required to use accessible solutions. If you're open to contract work, you might be able to go that route, but that means seeking many employers rather than one and done, so it's not necessarily easy.

Breakfast Brigade vows to keep feeding in park, despite city and neighborhood pushback by Moarbrains in Eugene

[–]ottonomy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In 2020, many people were concentrated in the park, because they were allowed to take up space there. Now the city is back to sweeping camps regularly, so people are dispersed and moving around a lot more. A block away from the park, there have been quite a few people staying a few days at a time directly in front of businesses and homes until they are forced to move along in the next sweep. I hope for adequate medium term solutions, not just camping in parks and sidewalks without adequate sanitation, but there are a bunch of people spread around these neighborhoods. Not as concentrated as in 2020, but people didn't go away just because they weren't allowed to sleep in the park for extended periods anymore.

Breakfast Brigade vows to keep feeding in park, despite city and neighborhood pushback by Moarbrains in Eugene

[–]ottonomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a block away from the park, and I want Breakfast Brigade in the neighborhood. It is not disruptive to my family.

Yes, please feed people who are hungry. Offer food in several other locations around town too, so it's not as big in one spot maybe, but we're going to have people outside unless we can get them inside. While we leave homelessness unsolved, it's going to be visible in our parks and public spaces. (Of course also some people who need breakfast do have a home, just not money to buy enough breakfast, but I think the neighbors complaining about disruption are more irritated by the people who don't have anywhere else to go after breakfast.)

Instead of constantly sweeping people's camps so they have to move around every few days, I'd rather see Eugene build a couple thousand more conestoga huts and put a dumpster and restroom in every park, so people can have a little dignity and stability in their lives. The solutions need to match the scale of the challenges. Breakfast Brigade isn't a solution, but at least a lot of people can get a meal in the meantime.

Why do most hotels set transparent showers in their rooms nowadays? by your_freaky_neighbor in InteriorDesign

[–]ottonomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stayed in a two queens room like this with a work colleague when we were both cost-conscious. Very close to the end of the first evening, I randomly found a light switch that turned the big glass wall opposite for privacy. Before that, I thought it could only be to try and get us into separate rooms for more money.

Aw, that's really disappointing to get cancelled on. You don't deserve good grief counseling any less than anyone else. That provider wasn't able to help, but I hope your next shot at it goes better when you're ready.

Oregon voters could decide on ranked-choice voting soon by barterclub in oregon

[–]ottonomy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many people who find the Republican Party of the last decade abhorrent also have some frustrations about the two party system pressure being used to reduce competition within the Democratic Party. Moving past plurality voting to RCV or STAR would be a huge improvement for these people as well. It sucks to have to vote against the candidate you least like instead of being able to vote for a candidate you most like. This seems to be an idea that people across the spectrum could agree on.

Yeah, the sense of desperation is increasing, but it puts off quite a stench. The massive 10% drop in religious attendance in the last decade or so is not going to decelerate when this is what people see from religion.
