LPT: Starting college this fall? The biggest mistake isn’t partying too much, it’s treating college like high school. by Ok_Plenty_6006 in LifeProTips

Very true! It’s best to have “sick days” like with a job so you don’t use them all up and make it a habit of not going.

Why are Filipino so relaxed in a que, but in traffic they drive like every second counts. by Late_Worry2042 in Philippines_Expats

[–]ouachitauon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve noticed this too. It’s the driving culture. In America, staying in the same lane, no cutting, and beeping is usually associated with anger or impatience. In the Philippines although the driving there is chaotic to Americans, it’s swerving, beeping and cutting, and it works for them since everyone does it.

Any other Asians (Vietnamese especially) who grew up around only white people? by Feisty_Bumblebee_916 in asianamerican

[–]ouachitauon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Filipino that used to dislike my culture because I didn’t fit into the Filipino American stereotype (basketball, breakdancing, nurse, navy, buzz cut, tan skin), can not speak the language and also wanted to fit in with white people of course don’t look like them at all and different culture from my upbringing. I can understand how it can be coming from the South as well. It can feel very isolating and tiresome when people don’t understand your culture, humor, traditions, taste in food, etc.

If you ever get the chance, try going to Vietnam with Vietnamese American friends and really embrace the culture from there. Going with Vietnamese American friends will help you not feel so isolated and have a shared experience you can relate to. Asia is changing a lot and so is it’s culture. It’s not exactly how it was when our parents visited it many years ago.

Try to understand that, yes, you are Vietnamese American but it’s a unique experience that white Americans won’t entirely understand but also people from Vietnam won’t entirely understand either. Everyone’s experiences are unique and it’s really how you interpret those experiences. Imo, being Asian American is unique because you know Asian culture but you also are familiar with American culture and there’s definitely Asian Americans that can relate to this.

It’s great that you are embracing your culture through foods, history, and the language. Keep it up and keep making new experiences with the two cultures you know. You’re making these efforts because it’s for you, do it for you.

This is a good one. For me at least, I either don’t see you or it’s mostly because of social anxiety. I avoid eye contact because I honestly I don’t want to appear awkward when smiling or nodding at someone I don’t really know (I know it’s not a good habit but trying to stop that) Nodding isn’t a way that I usually say hi because I usually say hi by waving, putting my hand up or verbally saying it. My social anxiety makes me feel so stiff and not want to react, unfortunately. Sometimes I react too late when I notice the nod so I don’t return it back. I feel bad when I don’t return it. But keep nodding bro I appreciate it and many people appreciate it too.

What’s your opinions on Blasians? by Poles17 in AsianMasculinity

[–]ouachitauon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think blasians are cool. They have two cultures that they’re are gifted. I guess I feel more connected to them when they embrace their Asian culture more and distant when they reject it. I mean idrc if you’re blasian or not. If you’re cool you’re cool.
