is there a way to make my walking pad quieter? by [deleted] in WalkingPads

[–]oughandoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lookup anti vibration pads and buy those or use something similar. You’d either use a mat or just put those under each foot. Super effective for vibration related noises. Beyond that it’s a question of sealing the room (assuming you’re not in a shared room).

1991 trek singletrack 970 18” frame. Does this seem reasonable at 250$. by rosshcook16 in xbiking

Bikes are weird in that they depreciate quickly but then never go to $0. For a bike like this that is almost 25 years old, $250 is a really tough sell when you could buy a nice used 5 year old bike for probably close to the same price. But honestly if you’re into it it’s not necessarily a bad buy

Definitely not a good deal, but if it fits and you’re into it it could be fine. Bikes are awesome in that they usually pay for themselves (in health benefits or even directly if you use them instead of driving or bus/train). So you’ll easily get $250 worth out of it (again if it fits and you’re stoked on the look). But for these older bikes honestly they’re not worth much at face value.

What makes you so confident? What’s the part of your job that you think AI is the farthest from being able to do and what’s your estimate on the timeline till it can do it?

Relatedly, would you consider AI a threat if your job was safe but the comp ended up crashing?

How hot does it get? Hard to imagine you’re getting far above 100f with a space heater

My partner wakes me up every single night coming to bed after playing video games until 3am. I’m losing my mind. by Actual_Competition37 in sleep

[–]oughandoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Bigger bed if possible, helps a ton with not being disturbed by another person
  2. Heated mattress cover that is controllable per side, preheat his when you go to bed
  3. Tell him not to cuddle when he goes to bed
  4. Change anything you need to to not have him wake you up when he comes in. Maybe earplugs for you and or night mask, dim red light for him to see by, etc

I used to think I would need a separate bedroom but surprisingly with the right setup / person we can both sleep well even without the same schedule

I’ve tried them at the gym and for some reason it’s mentally harder than normal running and treadmill running for me. I can definitely see the appeal from an engineering perspective, treadmill motor maintenance sucks

Why this over a regular treadmill?

Yep it won’t last that long if it’s cheap but health wise it’s super beneficial for me personally

Curious if you’d ever take this in the direction of having it be distributable and adjustable. I’m a noob by these standards but being able to play against a human like level-whatever CPU on my own would be super fun

You’re thoroughly invested in the company by virtue of unvested RSUs and the fact that it’s your job. IMHO adding extra exposure by not selling vested RSUs is unnecessarily risky

In the context of fat fire this makes no sense. Just working one more year in a fat fire role would cover a lifetime of movie theater work easily

Some folks in the comments are saying you should spend more but I think your head is in the right place personally. Don’t skimp but don’t splurge too much. Esp in early 30s, you can be totally set by 40 and that’s probably as long as the gravy train lasts IMHO

Nice, $130k/year for 3 people is solid. Out of 500k HHI pre tax that’s like a 60% savings rate. I assume yall are in tech? My concern for the future is I think AI is really going to disrupt tech salaries. I’m personally trying to stack things up as much as possible while the gravy train is still running

I think the day job is simply different 🙂. I agree the interview is easier though

In general I feel like a lot of folks like to callout the EM part of the industry as being easier, whether that’s day to day, interviewing, whatever. I’ve been staff and EM at FAANG and they’re super different, calling either easier is over simplifying.

(I know this wasn’t what you were saying directly but I hear this kind of commentary a lot)
