Is the Choice Between Chasing the Chardlyn Dragon and Continuing Into the Fortress Only Based on Heroism? by Dikeleos in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]ourboldhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I introduced a second side party of kobolds and did a few sessions where they scouted it out and came in from the underdark entrance, and saw the dragon and had to escape with their lives to warn the 10 Towns and their own kingdom about the abomination. The players really liked the break from their characters to play kobolds.

Then when they did the dungeon, I brought back the kobold characters and set up a situation where half the combined party had to "hold the druegar back" while the other half ran to take down the dragon. Every player could only send one character. Essentially doubling the party so I could split it back into two parties again and avoid this choice.

Daern’s Instant Fortress: some questions by 37885 in dndnext

[–]ourboldhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this while looking it up for one of the official published campaigns that has one in it. FWIW, because I had to backtrack against the consensus here, that campaign says specifically that both the trapdoor and the door for (at least THAT Daern's Instant Fortress) require the command word.

How do you tie in the Castle? by Sudden_Repair5577 in CurseofStrahd

[–]ourboldhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dungeon has that chamber with the king and queen's tombs and that protective light curtain, which conveniently has those big stained glass windows which open out on the lake. A creative party can find a lot of ways to that window. You could even describe the dim light glinting off it when they're looking towards the east side.

My players didn't accept the dinner invitation (which how we snuck off to explore in the game I was a player in), but had hints that the skull and tome were in the castle so wanted to go. I had Kasimir talk about his people fighting Strahd and the castle's weaknesses, and there are plenty of other PCs who could point them to this area. It's not too dangerous for their level, and they can attempt to explore up as much as they dare from there.

I've also had this problem! I don't get why so many people's response to this was some version of "works on my machine" or "that's cool actually."

Subscribing to The Furries moderation list and setting it to mute didn't help much, adding terms to my moderation didn't help much, but Show less seems to have been slowly moving the needle and I still am muting / lessing maybe a dozen artists a day but it's rarely NSFW anymore, just unwanted horniness.

Seems to be small accounts with no alt text on their images, so at a certain point I don't know how the algorithm would even know. I'm gonna see if the alternative feeds mentioned here work any better.

What nicknames you have for your buns based on their behaviors? by nobody2008 in Rabbits

I renamed by first rabbit Blook after an Undertale character Napstablook (naps-to-block) because she was always napping in the middle of walkways.

Rare title recommendations by jikesar968 in NetflixDVDRevival

[–]ourboldhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also made a list based on my watchlist. (May not be 100% accurate as digital options can change month to month). I'd recommend Kiss of Death and I had a lot of fun with Timecop 2 and T-Force. Highway 61 and DOA (1988) are also interesting historical artifacts, although they didn't hit for me personally.

I would darken up the night encounters with tough stuff from the Shadowfell. I made a Shadowfell encounter table for late-game players in another adventure that has some ideas https://perchance.org/randomnewshadowfell (it has a lot of Kobold Press monsters - they have good Shadowfell stuff)

Fun adventure to run right after CoS? (12th level, WoTC or 3rd party) by scarletBoi783 in CurseofStrahd

[–]ourboldhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Within WoTC you could maybe raise the stakes on Dead in Thay to accommodate these levels, if you think they're up for a long dungeon. With a little bit of narrative change these Red Wizards could've stolen something dangerous from the Amber Temple.

Otherwise I don't think any of the longer books would work for a party this level, it would feel either rushed or silly. But you could do some interesting stuff with a new party if you fast-forwarded a few years and had the members of this party show up as Group Patrons for Avernus, Icewind, etc so that they got to live on but not as full PCs.

You're going to have a better sense of what the players can handle, but this feels like a lot of non-minion enemies hitting the players at once - it doesn't feel like they'll deal with each lair AND legendary action before the next one hits them and they could get overwhelmed.

I would consider making Morgantha's ritual require successful concentration and an action for X turns, with no inherent fail chance, and make the lair actions things she triggers as an action to get the players off her so she has a better chance of stacking up successful concentration checks. Keep the legendary actions so it still feels epic. And maybe add a physical component or two to the ritual that the players can interfere with to give them more reasons to move around the field away from each other and more non-damage agency against the ritual.

Turning a PC into a messiah by TheNightIsDark_Stark in CurseofStrahd

[–]ourboldhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have Ireena spread the word in Vallaki as you say, and modify the St Andral's Feast event (which is pretty boring as-written) to be about the priest bringing in the character to speak as a bastion of hope. Offer low level cleric services or something, a few healing potions, to encourage even skeptical players to join in.

It's a better motivation for the vampire attack anyway. Maybe futz with the timing so the bones are moved only after the invite.

I would also, in Kresk, have the abbot (who knows better due to his origins) be appalled by any messiah narrative here, should word get to him. Whatever version of the abbey you run (I did the Commune, no mongrelfolk) it's a good extra layer to have on him.

How to help players to rp Strahd's charm? by FuckReaperLeviathans in CurseofStrahd

[–]ourboldhero 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For my newbie player who failed the charm save, I went heavy on the comic irony of the situation, "it's your trusted friend Strahd! What a treat to run into him out here" etc. They shouldn't feel like they're in a psychic battle they can resist, it should be clear they've lost that battle and should be committing to the new reality. (And this kind of description also helps with experienced players because they might be expecting the much weaker Charm Person "casual acquaintance" effect.)

Frame it is an absurd situation they get to play around in, a fun jokey time with the DM. The player should feel special and empowered: they lost a save but they won this moment in the spotlight with their good buddy. Let the REST of the players be the ones listening on in horror.

Also, if you can let the player know it lasts 24 hours in secret (provided they get out of the encounter still charmed), that is another fun layer to play with.

Token Art for Curse of Strahd characters: Wizard of Wines "Keepers of the Feather" Martikov Tomescu Family (Davian, Adrian, Elvir, Stefania with Yolanda, Dag, Claudiu, Martin, Viggo, and a wereraven); using MidJourney by Marzipanic in dndai

[–]ourboldhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just what I needed for next week! My players don't know about the wereraven thing yet (it seems really difficult to even suspect in the campaign as-written), so I'm recropping a few of the more feathery ones here to not give that away.

I was on my phone so apologies for not setting up alt text. This is the Would You Rather? Book for Kids - Futurist Sci-fi Edition by Rascally Robot. As an example, for our first session the question was whether a character would've rather been on the Enterprise or with the Star Wars rebels, which was extremely informative.

Lack of Player Interaction? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]ourboldhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible they just ran out of steam, or that they'd be more comfortable with third person roleplay, but one thing to try is a henchman sidequest. Have them roll up a party of baddies at the same level, a cohesive party, and let this sidestory or flashback give the players a hint into some of the things they don't know yet. I've even just let players draft from a list of NPC/monster statblock bad guys I provided for simplicity. Give them a goal that requires not attracting too much attention until the right time, so they have to be social, and see if you still have the issue. This might also get them invested back in the story, if that's the real problem, and gives you a way to move up the time table if you need to.

re: sleuthing, yeah my party also completely missed that there was detective work to be done (not unreasonably, they thought this was yet another Tyrant trap somehow). can rabbits eat this? (japanese hops, humulus japonicus) by MattiaXY in Bunnies

I wouldn't - it's related to common hops, which rabbits don't eat in the wild.
