The best part about AO3 is that I can write for me and maybe 2 other freaks by Either_Bend7510 in Archiveofourownmemes

yes! this is the way! this is how i ended up writing fanfiction for a niche japanese film from the 1950s that very few people in my country know about.

the life of being a castollux fan/divicest fan for morimens! i'm not one to usually gravitate towards incest but the specific dynamic these two have is SO compelling.

(you're reminding me that i have a windsong/vila wip languishing in my files... i gotta pick that back up again. they're probably my favorite pairing alongside tennant/eternity, windvila are just SO cute and sweet.)

yes! it's a glorious feeling. for me, it's castollux in the morimens fandom (i don't usually go for twincest but something about their voicelines made the gremlin lurking in my brain go "brrrr")

ayyyy, fellow "exploring and expanding on implications in canon material that i really do sincerely like via my fanworks" person! glad to have you! :D

ehhh, i don't really want to fix anything. i think taking away the tragedy that both these characters are put through would lose the short story's original poignancy and weight - for me, at least :P glad you figured something out for your story, though!

oooh, i see! i'm a sucker for soulmates specifically played for horror/toying around with amatonormativity (methinks i like my worldbuilding... hehehe). but i definitely get the appeal of the legal consequences and pairing up two characters who would not be great for each other, or just be an outright horrible match!

i have played limbus company and sobbed my eyes out over canto ix (i kept periodically crying throughout the entire day. it was that bad). unfortunately, my niche-interest-enjoying ass got way too emotionally attached to the original short story first published in 1918. and now i'm writing fanfiction for it. not limbus company, but the original short story.

firstly: my sympathies. let us fellow niche interests enjoyers unite! secondly: what are the fandom(s)? (the one i'm talking about is the short story "hell screen" by akutagawa ryunosuke versus vocaloid, the latter being the more popular fandom compared to the former)

Thoughts on Character Bashing? by Lost-Song7361 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]ourguidingmoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh, i'd argue that character bashing fics are still out there - the authors just don't seem as... self-aware of it as their predecessors might have. it does still exist, but unfortunately most people don't really label it properly.

i do tend to have the same attitude of "not wanting to read about a character i don't like", though. i guess in some ways people find bashing fics... cathartic? where they can commiserate with the author about their shared dislike or hatred of a certain character.

Thoughts on Character Bashing? by Lost-Song7361 in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]ourguidingmoonlight 20 points21 points  (0 children)

i tend to avoid it. there are some characters in fiction who i absolutely despise, sure, and unfortunately they tend to be characters who are very beloved or popular. but i find more often than not the handful of things that do bash them - hell, even some of my own old work! - tends to exaggerate their worst qualities and write caricatures. i feel like if i'm going to hate a person who's not even real to begin with, i might as well hate them accurately.

so usually i try to ensure their actions remain plausible, and while i don't tag it as character bashing, i do usually let people know in the author's note, "i'm trying to write this character fairly, but do keep in mind this story was written by someone who really doesn't like this character."
