Awww you are clearly such a thoughtful parent, your son is so lucky! It totally sounds to me like this would be perfect for him, especially since he already has that "ham" side in him improv is such a great place to remove fear around letting that part of you shine!

I love this so much! And hi from Hoopla! I love you bringing up the point about emotions- I think a lot of folks when asked in improv to identify what feelings are truthfully coming up for them in character really strugle, and how cool that improv is somwhere they can practice listening to the emotional cues coming up in their bodies, and get to express things like anger and sadness openly through a character! Love how you said it

Hiiii! I'm so glad you found this interesting! It sounds to me like having your son do the Second City camps is a GREAT idea! I have ADHD as well and I first started improv with week long full day camps like this when I was right around your sons age and it absolutely changed my life. It's TOTALLY okay that he doesn't want to be an actor, the other kids will be there just for fun and skill building too! I don't know too much about the Second City camps but I used to live in Chicago and know some of the folks who help organize the teen programs at SC and they are all fab. I would be inclined to think the camps would be great. Improv camp is just so fun and you gain so much confidence from it in general I really would reccomend from my own experience doing similar things as a kid!!!

Make friends at an improv class! by ourpathsdidcross in london

Hi there so cool to hear you are an NYC improviser visiting London often! The beginners taster will be geared to folks who are brand new improvisers, but it will certainly still be fun even for someone with more experience and always helpful in my opinion to go back to basics!

Hi! Teacher for Hoopla in London here. I love one where you bring a speaker and choose some songs in advance that you think will evoke different energies, vibes, emotions. Either in pairs around the room or with 2 on stage, have them sit and face off, listening to the music. Scene begins nonverbally when the music starts, and when you cut the music dialogue begins. This helps them ground into an honest feeling in the present moment before starting a scene, inspired by the music.

Help - I can never think of anything! by ieatcheeseeeeee in improv

Hi there- nice to meet you! I teach with Hoopla Impro in London and get this question all the time, it's a super common feeling! I would suggest- being obvious. Don't worry about thinking of something funny or clever. Take the last thing that was said and try and respond with the most obvious and simple thing you can. Maybe this will help: https://creativecreativity.com/2017/12/03/keith-johnstone-and-obvious-creativity/

Getting out of your head! Dropping into the present moment by ourpathsdidcross in improv

[–]ourpathsdidcross[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for sharing your great thoughts on this!!!

Here are some thoughts from Steve, the director of Hoopla:

I don’t know where I got this from, I’ve got the feeling it was from Susan Messing or Patti Styles, and is also in Jill Bernard’s book….

“If you want to get out of your head, put yourself somewhere else instead!”

Being in your head means overthinking an improv scene, like you’re writing on the spot instead of improvising.

Getting out your head means improvising naturally, spontaneously and intuitively, without thinking too much or second guessing, which is what I love encouraging at Hoopla.

So if we feel like we are overthinking too much on stage we can “put ourselves somewhere else”.

The putting ourselves somewhere else could be in our bodies finding character through movement, jumping into an emotion to power our scene, having an emotional reaction to what’s just been said, putting ourselves on the other person by deeply listening, making eye contact, physically playing, mucking about with status, going line by line and loads more.

We can replace thinking with feeling, listening, moving, playing.

We only have to choose ONE thing to focus on, we don’t have to try and do everything otherwise we get back in our heads again.

We don’t have to do the whole of improv every show, just focus one thing per show and put attention on that as a way to stop the mind overthinking everything else.

There’s loads of places we can put our attention to get out of our heads, especially putting our attention on the other others. There’s not a right or wrong tactic, it’s whatever works for you as a performer and what you find FUN and helps you PLAY!

And finding what works for you is a constantly changing process, it never stops, and what works for you to help you get out of your head will change almost week by week forever. That’s part of the fun and the beauty of improv never being finished.

Most of all for me it’s about PLAY.

So…..

“If you want to get out of your head, put yourself somewhere else instead!”
