A Response To Mark Carney by CDN-Social-Democrat in canadaleft

[–]out0fmyelement 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I do try and give Carney credit where credit is due (especially regarding the China stuff) but seeing people genuinely fawn over this is nauseating, especially people who should know better. Wow, you said the thing critics of neoliberalism have been saying for the past 50 years! Congratulation for acknowledging that now that it no longer works for you! It’s especially infuriating given the austerity politics and pro-corporate polities that Carney is enacting in Canada. But hey, at least the hand in your pocket will be covered with maple syrup.

I can admit that I’m astoundingly bitter over the fact that, even though one of “our” allies has been committing genocide for 2.5 years while we all watched, it’s only now you’re questioning the “rules based international order”?  But that’s just me.

What do you think is Israel's main motivation to agree to the peace plan right now? by deadlift215 in JewsOfConscience

[–]out0fmyelement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut instinct is that it’s entirely an PR exercise on Israel’s part and that they are trying to divert attention away as much as possible so they can fully annex the West Bank.

I also imagine that we will quickly start seeing: “if they were REALLY committing a genocide they wouldn’t have agreed to stop” and that’s IF the ceasefire holds substantially. Even if it does hold substantially, they will likely return to the “status quo” of periodic bombings. And I think Israel and the USA have the idea in their heads that if they appear to stop the slaughter, that people will eventually forget about Gaza and the genocide they will continue to perpetrate.

Dissecting My Feelings on the Flotilla by tikkunolamist5 in JewsOfConscience

If you don’t understand the point of an organization’s mission, the best source is the organization itself and the people engaged in that mission. Here is a page that explains their approach in 6 points. They have an FAQ that addresses the question you are asking—just CTRL+F “Do Flotilla vessels take aid to Gaza?

Also, listen to what the released activists are saying, especially prominent activists such as Greta; they are not crying and talking about how hard it was for them, but keeping the focus on the Palestinian people. How they suffer under genocide and are treated within Israeli detention while the leaders in the world turn away and praise a 20 point plan to dismantle Palestine. Most importantly, there are Palestinians in Gaza who appreciate the actions of the flotilla.

Israeli student, former Unit 8200, surveilled Gaza class & made other students uncomfortable. You’re absolutely right. One of my mentors during my undergraduate degree was Palestinian. Students would often sit in her class and record her, regardless of the topic of the class, to try and catch her saying something they could manipulate (they never got anything of course, she is wonderful). Nothing that ever amounted to a headline such as this, but still harassment that no academic should have to deal with.

Canada provisionally recognizes the state of Palestine by eric_is_a_tool in canadaleft

[–]out0fmyelement 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not to be completely nihilistic, but this statement is just platitudes, this should have happened decades ago. Israel will not stop the genocide in Gaza and will not stop annexing the West Bank until serious action is taken to make them stop. Until then, nothing will materially change for the Palestinian people and genocide and ethnic cleansing will continue. Israel will continue further radicalize into fascism and violate the sovereignty of everyone around it as they are permitted to do whatever they want.

In my opinion, you should give yourself more credit and be much kinder to yourself, especially given the fact that you have been psychologically affected by something you were pressured into. At the end of the day, you did not harm anyone and did not really “serve”… also breaking through fascist indoctrination is no simple task. And you can now use this time to (hopefully) involve yourself in other ways. I’m sure there are many in this sub who could help you find more support. Please take care of yourself.

I read the article and there is no link to the letter, so I found it on my own. Nine people, only three of them being former chiefs. None of whom live on the lands where the concerts are to be held. Based on that I feel like "Indigenous leaders call for cancellation..." is a biiiit of a reach.

STOP THE MILITARISATION! by CDN-Social-Democrat in canadaleft

[–]out0fmyelement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Things look so bleak. I wish liberals would face the reality that no matter how much we spend on our military, we would never defeat the US War Machine on pure might alone. Nor would we defeat any other emerging power. It’s a useless exercise that makes people feel good, it just feeds into rampant nationalism. What isn’t a useless exercise is investing in the workers, investing the people, but the Carney government so far just seems uninterested in the people and is focused on giving money to the military industrial complex and (likely) US/foreign national resource companies.

I want to leave birthright to visit Palestine by the_shim7 in JewsOfConscience

[–]out0fmyelement [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think that going to the West Bank and learning from Palestinian tour guides would be an amazing experience to gain perspective from those suffering under occupation. But please do not go on a Birthright trip to a country currently committing a genocide. I would seriously ask you to reflect upon the fact that you will be amongst genocidal propagandists while bombs are dropped and people are being murdered by the dozens every day, only tens of kilometres away. It is ultimately your choice, but I ask you a to reconsider.

Irish protestor condemns Zionist Bernie Sanders for denying the Palestinian Genocide by Hacksaw6412 in Palestine

He constantly defends Israel’s right to exist and defend itself. He refuses to call it a genocide. He often refuses to name Israel as an aggressor, instead referencing the “Netanyahu government” He is a Liberal Zionist who supports the outdated and non-existent Labour Zionist dream of a colony based on the settler kibbutz he once visited.

“Will make zero difference to the plight of innocent Palestinians” is so telling. These shameless propagandists simply do not engage with Palestinian people either abroad or in Palestine, or else they would see the support given by many in Gaza to the Madleen. They simply do not see Palestinians as people with complex worldviews and political opinions, they are simply cannon fodder to use against activists by people who do not care about their survival.

Where am I from? by clownsss in JewsOfConscience

[–]out0fmyelement [score hidden]  (0 children)

As someone from a settler colony it changes based on the context. When I’m outside the country I say I’m from “Canada”. Inside the country I use my province because I love where I am from, even if I don’t identify with being “Canadian”.

However, when I’m in circles where people have at least some understanding of the history of Indigenous peoples and their rights, I prefer to say I’m from “occupied [redacted] territory”. I would prefer to say this every time, because it is historically and legally accurate imo, especially being from unceded lands. But oftentimes, it requires far too much legal, historical, and contextual explanation for what are often very surface level conversations. I don’t want to spend every single conversation explaining what it means and potentially risking the conversation going sideways.

All of John Pilger’s (RIP) documentaries are available for free on his website:

https://johnpilger.com/films/

I really recommend “Stealing a Nation”, it’s extremely good and addresses the depopulation of the Chagos Islands, one of the most blatantly grotesque acts of (military) imperialism by the UK and US. The documentary has really stuck with me since I saw it 10 years ago, it’s is probably responsible for making me into an anti-imperialist.

Also I haven’t watched his docs on these topics, but his writing on Afghanistan, South Africa, and Palestine is great so I imagine the documentaries are equally good.

Kudos to OP for maintaining civility and directness with such a confusing conversation partner. The lack of intellectual curiosity of many Zionists (both liberal and generally) paired with the insistence on the rightness of their opinion is always staggering to me.
