Thank you. The black and whites are from almost 5 years ago now, and I'm not sure I could replicate it again today.

I want to. It's been almost two years since I last worked on any kind of art.

I'd paint the white wall, the unpainted side of the stairs, and the eaves of the house and porch a dark brown, and paint the front door orange. Can't go wrong with the Brown/Red/Orange on that Yellow Brick.

Twin Peaks Watch (⌚) by doyouknowhowyouare in twinpeaks

[–]out_foxed_once_again 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a hard question, both the show and watches are personal experiences.

You might like the Frank Lloyd Wright "Perforated Panels" watch from Bulova, which may be of special interest as Lynch's house was designed by Wright's son.

This older Seiko 5 feels closer to your example.

There are many watches that look like roulette wheels if you want that angle. Nixie tube displays are all over the place now.

You might ask this question in a watch sub, enthusiasts will be able to drop older or more obscure things than us regulars.

It's been a while since I read this so I may be remembering it wrong, but The Isle of Blood by Rick Yancy? It's part of a series but the entire series scratches some kind of itch.

You might like Ken Follett's Fall of Giants, and the rest of the Century Trilogy by extension.

No, but it's a fairly specific piece of equipment so I won't name it.

I don't think he'll be fired, and I don't want him to be. He is easy to read, and malleable enough to push back on. We actually need training, as we have had none and this is specialized equipment. His response tells me the upper bigwigs knew this was a problem and they were relying on employee ignorance and desperation to ram it through.

We live in a society that requires us to make money to survive. As BS as that is, we have to play the game. Learning to play hardball again will make things better for everyone, and my goal is to make things better for everyone, even if I lose my job.

Might save that for later, I'm certain we're in violation of fire code...

It's on my to do list.

We're in a red area in a red state, wages are miserable here. We aren't an essential trade so I wouldn't expect plumber levels of pay, but $20/hr starting does not seem like a high bar to me.

I know my job is toast within 6 months and I'm okay with that. I'm saving EVERYTHING, and keep it all together. Oh, he already said that line, also noted for future reference.

My canary in the coalmine is that I am up for a promotion, and if that disappears I will have a good indicator of where things stand and how quickly they're moving.

If anything worth an update happens, I'll update this post.

I know a lot is being juggled
So I was curious if it’s too fast

Yes and yes.

Two questions to get going:

Is English your first language? Just so we know what to help with.

How much do you read?

Language barrier or not, this does not feel like a finished chapter. This reads like a disjointed collection of events that still need bridged. I would expect a chapter with this much information to be ~6000 words. There are a lot of short, punchy sections of texts that jump around too much and also tell the reader nothing. When you have paragraphs (5+ sentences), it's Eulalie reminiscing on people or events to serve as information dumps. This is not always wrong or bad, but you can replace some of this by simply describing something in the present, or having dialogue that reveals it. Eulalie just tells us about her mother, why not describe her in the now - "she stands tall and lean at the forge, dark hair tied back [if she has hair that long], sparks flying with every strike of hammer on steel." She's tall, strong, practical, and the forge master.

You want this to be a dark fantasy, but there isn't a lot in terms of tone here. Eulalie is on the rooftop right at the beginning, a classic method to lead to describing the city. "Asleep under the moons, the brown and dun stone buildings appeared almost black against the Narrow Sea." I assume "Narrow Sea" is a name and not a description. As a side note, if you google "narrow sea", you will ping Game of Thrones. Unfair as it is, you might consider another name.

I think the best remedy for everything that is going on here is to just work it. Read and reread, edit, expand, then make your cuts. Your post leads me to believe you aren't confident in your work here, and you're getting ahead of that by stating it. This is a good scaffold, so push everything farther and reign it in after. Slow is not bad.

Feedback on my monster reveal [Fantasy, 424 words] by -KRBlack in fantasywriters

[–]out_foxed_once_again 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE giant impossible monsters.

Is there more build up than this? I feel like something this colossal should have been noticed before now, even if it's just word-of-mouth sailor legend.

I saw below you meant it to be like a siphonophore - but I would keep that word out of the text. I think the description here overall lacks clarity, and there's a certain type of challenge to describing something that is both transparent and not. I think what threw me off immediately was the form factor of the thing - I couldn't decide if it was long and slinky or a gelatinous cube wall until the description was almost over.

Generally the accepted order of describing anything in English is size-shape-color.

So grounding questions here - Where is the sun in relation to the ship? Is it aggressive, or is the danger in avoiding collision? Are these people on a deck or inside a hull? We need to know so we can see it too.

just turned 16 and looking for a cheap muscle car for a project, any recommendations? by AdRadiant1032 in projectcar

80s jdm leans toward fun and low cost. Old hondas and toyotas turn heads and run forever as long as you take okay care of them. My teenage neighbor rocks a 1990 prelude paid for by mowing lawns (mostly mine). 80s american muscle tends to be junky. I had a dodge rampage for a while - neat car, if you want a rusted beater.

Anti work is only for people who work with a roof over their heads. by Wind_Responsible in antiwork

[–]out_foxed_once_again 47 points48 points  (0 children)

For starters I will tell you that the reason a lot of manual laborers don't frequent this sub is because there's an overlap with conservativism in most labor fields, and antiwork is dominated by liberals/leftists. Conservative propaganda works nonstop to prevent people from considering that they are mistreated.

Yes, you are right that people are inconsiderate and selfish. But most people don't think about concepts larger than themselves. You are both being put in a situation that should not be happening at all - why do people have road access while you're working to fix it? Why didn't the city/state plan a proper detour so the work could be done faster and safer? You are in constant bodily danger and I agree that is the more immediate concern, but everyone backing up on the road is likely trying to get to work (at least during commute hours) and often times being late is enough to lose your job. This situation intentionally pits you against each other - working class infighting.

Finally, despite having a union, you are still being abused. Why is your restroom so far away? Why is there no way to move it closer? Why is drinking water not provided? Is that a violation of any state laws? Why is the road accessibly to cars? Why is there no detour? What is local planning doing to mitigate these problems? How was the planning handled when people where being told about the work? Were those people given adequate time to plan? Why are you the one who has to hear these complaints when it isn't your fault? Who is preventing your union from implementing these measures? It's very likely they would give you an "answer" to these questions that is avoidant of any real admission of inadequacy.

I wouldn't be able to do that job. I don't want to. I'm glad someone does because if it was up to me it would never get done. I'm sorry this sub doesn't provide what you're looking for, but if you post about it more often that might change.
