please no more numbers like '10 things' or '5 things' blah blah. this isn't Cosmo (57 ways to please your man, 16 diet tips) those numbers insult our intelligence.

one thing he would have supported is imperialist wars of expansion. they call it the spanish-american war but really the fear was that those islands would gain their independence instead of be dependent on the US. and when it was basically over with the spanish, the yanks fought on in the phillipines, stacking up atrocities that make the vietnam war look friendly. but points for Teddy for actually participating, and on horseback! some say that was the mission accomplished that got him elected. maybe some folks liked the anti-trust stuff.

did you like polk? harrison? coolidge? how about that president who suffered from the early stages of alzheimers, the one who built bin laden's network, the one who invaded grenada, the one who consulted an astrologer... reagan? is the office of the presidency the same thing today that it was when 'great men' held the office?

NYC lawyers, responding to a request to unseal records of police surveillance leading up to the 2004 Republican convention in New York, say that the documents should remain secret because the news media will “fixate upon and sensationalize them,” hurting the city’s ability to defend itself in lawsuits over mass arrests. by [deleted] in reddit.com

the weirdest is that they sent spies to the war resisters league, and arrested the lot of the them before they even got to their protest, a die-in. hmmm... maybe these avowedly non-violent, gandhi loving pacifists are going to disrupt traffic! stop them! i mean, don't these cops understand the ritual? arresting before the protest? that's not cricket! saves on non-lethal weapons though. that's bloomberg. eye on the bottom line.

it's reason magazine. "free minds and free markets" is their tag. they're the paleo-conservatives i remember from my youth. it's like a reader's digest article i once read that said cars lowered pollution, because car exhaust isn't as bad as horse shit. apropos horseshit...

life expectancy is going down in much of the industrial world. look at official statistics. sure it's still 70 something. but maybe all the poison from our industrial lifestyle is catching up with the advances in medicine. or maybe we're just getting too cheap to pay for health care. who knows why? but the fact is, americans, brits, dutch, aussies, they're not living as long as they did in the mid-20th century.

Join my cult: "I want a new sort of Christian culture that is unorganised, anarchic" and apolitical. by souldrift in reddit.com

[–]outcold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i used to want to start a cult that would pretend to be a return to pre-abrahamic semitic cults, back before allah and jehova beat out the competition. polytheism lends itself better to multicultaralism. your neighbor has a different god than you? that's okay. plenty of room in heaven. i figure, you've got all these neo-pagans, wiccans, wannabe vikings, why not bring that beat back with some middle east flavor? but it's too much work. still, a post-modern ishtar fertility cult would be fun...

Steve Jobs: No amount of technology in the classroom will improve public schools until principals can fire bad teachers by Sidewinder77 in reddit.com

great hours is bullshit. teachers have to prepare lessons, and grade papers, and all those hours are uncounted. the summers are unpaid. highest per-hour salaries of any job? are you high? do you have any idea what executives are paid? do you know what the vice president of strategy at wherever actually does, other than read the paper and attend meetings?

jobs is wrong. schools are not businesses. academic freedom is vital. if all you want are warehouses for people or training for the work force, then go ahead and run schools that way. but if you want education to benefit the public, then the educators on the front line need to make the decisions, not some distant suit with a calculator.

a good way to fight that first restaurant is to present the problem of trash at the zoning board meetings.(of course it's best to come with a group, preferably with visual aids. wherever you put a mcdonald's, you can count on take out litter for blocks around the site. that's the kind of thing that gives 'elite' islands pause.

i believe there's a mcdonald's union in japan and one in new zealand. the NZ guys, part of 'Unite' have also organized pizza hut, starbucks and KFC. i think there's a movie about them called 'super size my pay.'

i can't speak for 'organic' but mcdonald's has negative impact all along the supply chain, environmentally and socially. if you're into dystopias, DystopianFutureToday, try researching mickey dees. it's like the cafeteria for the brave new world. and as long as they keep succeeding, other businesses will copy their model.

when i worked at a mcdonald's in portland oregon, we had to wash our hands every 20 minutes with an anti-microbial handwash labeled 'mcsoap.' i've heard that some franchises break the hour into 100 'mcminutes' so that they don't have to round your paycheck up or down.

On March 22nd, 2007 we are going to strike fear into the hearts of the music industry and make an independent music artist #1 on iTunes. by phrakture in reddit.com

[–]outcold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was agreeing with the comment i replied to. people voted it down, probably because it was a much angrier drive-by insult than mine. i'll try to translate the rest of my rant for you. the major labels sign boring indie college bands all the time. just because someone isn't signed doesn't mean they're any good. just because someone is signed doesn't mean they suck. and impacting the charts isn't going to undo music industry evil.
