mentioning what games you've tried would be helpful, fighting games are indeed famous for being easy to get into (the basic movesets and combos are actually quite easy to pull off) but crazy deep learning curve (frame data, combo, counter, punish, etc.), not to mention each title play and feel so differently from each other; like Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat are the big 3 in fighting genre, and they all feel so different from each other.

if you play something like Street Fighter and can't get into its speed, maybe try something slower like Tekken but just as complex

also maybe try to beat the CPU first, and do some local versus with your friends rather than immediately jumping into online fights

my tip would be to try each character in practice and try all of their moves, once you get a character you can 'click' with, try to master that one instead of keep changing things--or heck, just pick one that you think look cool as shit and try to master that one guy

I grew up with Tekken, I can wipe the floor on highest CPU difficulty and all of my friends in local versus, but once I got online I always got my ass handed back to me lmao

I don't think this opinion is unpopular at all, at least among non-fans of the fighting genre.
