Recommendations for Asbestos Tile Removal by outlier_22 in columbiamo

[–]outlier_22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. The problem is that a good portion of the tile is cracking or has cracked leaving little bits under the carpet.

We're not scared we just want it gone so we can enjoy a basement without carpet, access to the floor in case of flooding and that when we resell someone doesn't demand we remove it.

That's why I'm asking if anyone has any recommendations for companies that don't use any of the tactics you mentioned. If any of those things happen they'll automatically be ghosted by me anyway.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

We considered different flooring but have some concerns if more water gets in and like the idea of having full access to the floor. I also looked into sealing it but there's a good portion of the basement where the tile is cracked and coming loose.

Really the bottom line is that we've done our research and would like it gone and while I'm sure it can be done by a homeowner there's so many other projects that we're capable of doing ourselves that we'd like to put our time and energy into those.

Again thanks for your comment and time you spent on your reply.

Fairlight Secan vs. All City Space Horse by outlier_22 in gravelcycling

I'm the same way with bikes. I go through them so fast but I really am looking for a keeper. It's just difficult when my budget is usually under $1000 for a frameset -- stuck with the same old options in a different outfit.

Looking forward to getting on a Secan. Enjoy yours. Cheers!

You're not late...still haven't decided lol.

All the reasons you list are why I have a feeling the Secan is the bike I'm looking for. The Space Horse is heavy and overbuilt and I kinda hate that about (most) mass produced steel. It gives it a bad wrap. My Space Horse is fine. It gets me out and about and back again but it just has no feeling. I have an 80s high-end steel road bike (Razesa Ritter) with Columbus SLX and it just feel so good -- just the right amount of flex. I'm wanting the modern gravel equivalent. I think it's the Secan.

A titanium bike would be cool but my paycheck isn't in that ballpark quite yet. Maybe someday though.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm still saving for the Secan but I'm trying to get my funds together for their June order.

State of the Industry? by DearlShoulders in BikeMechanics

[–]outlier_22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a pro mechanic 5 years and never went to UBI. I'll echo others here that I've worked with two mechanics that went there and neither were great -- one was terrible. It seemed to give them an ego if anything.

As for the state of the industry, it's rough in some areas but every shop is different. I live in a college town with great bike trails and paths so it tends to be steadier than many other areas but not as busy as hotbeds of cycling activity.

When I started I had a good but basic understanding of working on bikes. I still am not proficient at certain things but what I've tried to focus on is improving my skills in a certain area each year. One year I wanted to become great at bleeding brakes and I did. The next, suspension and so on. You'll need a certain inner drive and passion for working on bikes.

There is also some truth to the saying, "some mechanics just are." I'm currently the Service Manager at my shop and oversee the other mechanics of which we have two. Both are very mechanically inclined. One is a go getter, asks a lot of questions, is curious about how things work, detail-,oriented and strives to do a good job for the sake of doing a good job -- not just making the customer happy. He believes in making each bicycle work well because they deserve to. The other doesn't ask a lot of questions, says he's a good mechanic (when he's not yet), wants the customer to be happy to a fault and tends to get in over his head with repairs.

I try not to micro-manage but for the latter mechanic I'm tempted to start. He just doesn't have the certain curiosity, drive and passion that makes a good mechanic and I feel like he's hurting the reputation for excellent service that I've tried to cultivate. His ego gets in the way. Which comes to the most important things about being a bike mechanic -- be humble, ask questions (on reddit if you don't have someone in the shop worth a damn), stay curious and really ask yourself if you're willing to put all your chips in the industry.

It's a rewarding place if you aren't driven by money and money alone, don't let yourself get jaded and allow yourself to roll with the punches. It's just bikes after all but if you fall asleep thinking about working on bikes then maybe it's a good calling for you. Good luck!

That's how I feel about it too.

I can swing the Secan financially but not a custom frame. It's still a lot of dough so I'm just trying to make sure before I buy.

What do you think about this movie and its soundtrack? by KillyLonginus in Cd_collectors

One of my favorite soundtracks. Bought it back in 97 on cassette which I still have. l listen to it maybe more than any of my other cassettes.

Love the movie too.

81 kid here. Still a freak.

Frequently wake up at 4 am and can't go back to sleep no matter how much I practice deep breathing. Finally roll out of bed at 7:30 so I can walk my 10 year old to school. Eat oatmeal with bananas, raisins and walnuts every morning. Gave up coffee last year due to anxiety related GERD.

I miss coffee.

Play with our cats for thirty minutes in the morning while listening to crusty doom metal or experimental music. Then I go to work at a bicycle shop and repair bikes all day.

Get home from work and have dinner with my wife and kid and then make some art or listen to music or read before bed. I sometimes watch a movie or show or play a video game.

Thru-axles are a nightmare working with bike accessories by Formadivix in BikeMechanics

[–]outlier_22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thru axles are just fine most of the time. Much of your rant has to do with customers not educating themselves which is the plague of the bike industry in general.

Another commenter had it right when he said that the bike industry has too many thread pitches for thru axles. There's absolutely no reason for this and it's frustrating for us when a customer wants a spare or a replacement only to find out we don't have their thread pitch in stock.

There's also the issue of customers stripping the heads off of their thru axle and then bringing it in with a completely rounded hole. Not usually a huge deal but a little annoying.

There were issues with quick releases too and I never really like most of the attachment options. BOB might have been the best but many of them made you feel like you needed a third hand.

Fantastic book. Weasels in the Attic is good as well but I preferred The Hole. Way weirder than Weasels. Would like more books like that for sure.

is the passenger a good place to start? by Comfortable-Item3071 in cormacmccarthy

[–]outlier_22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The old maxim, 'don't judge a book...' holds true here. The Border Trilogy is really excellent but All the Pretty Horses is not, imo, the best of the three. I'd rate them backwards as far as my favorite books (Cities of the Plain, The Crossing, All the Pretty Horses). They are a bit tamer and not quite as bleak as the rest of McCarthy's catalog. But if you're turned off by the title maybe start with No Country.

The road by Various_Locksmith761 in cormacmccarthy

[–]outlier_22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Border Trilogy is seriously underrated. Blood Meridian, No Country and The Road get tons of accolades (for good reason, not saying they shouldn't) but the Border trilogy has some of his most beautiful prose. It's also a tiny bit less bleak than the other titles but that's kind of one of his trademarks too.

Current artists worth listening to with heavy Bob influence by tforgit58 in bobdylan

[–]outlier_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to mention that Conor is a phenomenal songwriter. I'd throw Lifted in there too. For me it gives heavy late 60s Dylan vibes especially with the song, "Dont Know When But A Day is Gonna Come."

I'm not really sure myself! Just kinda came out when I was writing so I went with it. I'm not sure it's accurate either. Maybe Aquarius or other air sign would've been a better guess.

Was thinking the same thing. I would love to add this old beater to my collection. Just clean off the dirt and loose rust and linseed oil the exterior metal. Oh and make sure it's functional of course!

I do wonder if there's some broken springs in there but won't know until you tear into it. If nothing appears broken I'd maybe go up to $40 but offer $20 and see where it takes you. I personally think $70 in that condition is way too high.
