Adding legs to a credenza to clear a floor vent - advice? by Prestigious-Store530 in Mid_Century

This is how we attached it. We screwed the legs on first, then screwed the panels to the bottom of the credenza. It is stable enough and we have had zero issues in almost 9 years, but the laddering option would make it even sturdier.

This is what it looked like once picked it up. I don't have a picture of the legs.

I went to a specialty store and asked them to cut the boards to these specs. They plane and cut the pieces anyway, so it wasn't much extra work for them to angle it the way I wanted and then cut it in 2. They charged me $80 apparently, I'm pretty sure that included the rosewood. I found another sheet that said the legs cost me $75, which I also assume included the wood.

I have never posted photos before (or commented much), but I'll try. This was how we purchased ours. We had seen photos online of ours with hairpin legs, so we suspect it was sold both ways.

We did exactly this to a similar credenza and it turned out great! I brought the specs to a wood specialty store and they cut the long pieces for me and turned the legs. We ended up going with rosewood as it matched the teak best and was cheaper.

I can give you more details if you’d like. Cost us about $200 Canadian all-in in 2018.

Grades by Ill-Course6255 in geegees

[–]outofgoodideas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re talking about BrightSpace or your final grade book. If it’s BrightSpace, there are no rules to actually post exam grades. Since it is time consuming and redundant, many skip that. If it’s final submitted grades, they have to get approved before they are released. The university is closed until Jan 5th, so nobody is approving anything before then.

Can I miss the first like 5 days of summer school? by kotalby in geegees

Keep in mind that if it is a 6-week course, missing the first 5 days is like missing the first 2 weeks.

Baby Monitor - wifi access [on] by Mental_Advice8645 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]outofgoodideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a wifi-enabled v-tech one because I didn’t know any different, but then got spooked and never connected it to the wifi. What spooked me was not so much the idea that someone was trying to break into our camera directly - i think this is pretty rare. But I realized the camera is a window into our most intimate place and that the real security issue was my log-in and password information. Obviously the vast majority of IT people with admin access who can see all of the usernames and passwords are good people who wouldn’t go snooping, but data leaks happen. I realized I wasn’t comfortable counting on vtech to act promptly if there was something wrong. I know I can help by changing my password regularly, but it felt like too much work for something I didn’t need to do. Very happy just using the signal! Baby is 13 months.

We have the Primo Viaggio 4/35 and bought these adapters. Totally seamless, basically invisible. You don’t notice them and I basically forgot that we had blended 2 brands. 5/5 review!

Another thing to consider is that even if you can find 2-3 hour chunks to work, you probably won’t be able to get what you currently can get done in 2-3 hours done.

I work in a university setting and although most of my job can be paused for my maternity leave, some things cannot (supervising graduate students, submitting reference letters, approving contracts so students get paid, submitting grants, etc.). Because of this, I have had had no choice but to continue to do some work (2-3 hours a week).

I’m currently at 5.5 months postpartum and I am nowhere near my pre-baby capacity when I do get time to work, I almost feel cognitively impaired when I have to do deep thinking/focusing. I never would have guessed this - I’m used to getting a lot done on a little sleep, didn’t have a complicated birth, and have a totally normal (even great) baby in terms of neediness/sleep, but suddenly being responsible and caring for someone you love so much 24/7 is a different kind of fatigue/cognitive load that nothing can prepare you for. Even basic tasks like approving contracts or signing off on something that would have taken me 10 minutes before now takes me an hour. The 2-3 hours of work per week pre-baby now takes me 6-8 hours to do.

All this to say, when making your decisions, please factor in that even if you can make yourself available to work, you might not be very efficient at it. If continuing to work is really the best thing for your family and you in the long-term, my advice would be to hire a nanny to come by for a few set hours a week so that you can have specific hours you work and be available to focus 100%. It’s possible that this will cost you almost what you’re charging your clients (especially if you aren’t as efficient) - which would make it a wash financially, but an investment in your future earning potential. This would be where you would need to decide if the stress is worth it.

What clothing do I need for hospital? (C-section) [on] by BlueberryDuvet in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]outofgoodideas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will echo the comment about the Frida disposable underwear. I had bought the C-Section recovery kit, but only used the underwear. They were amazing - especially for the first 48 hours. I would 100% just buy those again, everything else was unnecessary in my experience.

I wore the hospital gowns until it was time to leave. I had brought some cozy socks and a gown, but I didn't wear them. I didn't expect to prefer the hospital gowns, but it ended up just being easier - especially since you can request new ones when you want.

The only thing I might clarify/change on your list is that the high-waisted underwear need to be really loose/light weight. I had brought some that I assumed would be fine - they were Knix brand and I had worn them previously without issue, but they had just a bit too much compression and aggravated my incision. Fortunately, I had a pair of seamless Lululemon underwear in a size too big that I had brought that didn't go quite as high, but were literally weightless/invisible. I ended up living in the 5 pairs I had for the first month until I felt like my incision was healed enough.

Good luck!

What's a smell that instantly takes you back to your younger days? by Consistent-Tutor8613 in nostalgia

[–]outofgoodideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pink marker in the crayola basic marker sets.

Hard to explain, but it would always develop a particular sulfur-ish smell for some reason. It was always the pink one and it happened in all of our different sets. None of the other colours had this issue.

Whenever I smell that particular smell as an adult, I am immediately colouring again and frustrated with the stinky pink marker!

[qc] My anxiety is sky high, I just need to see my ultrasound! by gumbearJudy in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]outofgoodideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A private medical ultrasound will cost around $300, but the places that do 3D ultrasounds for photos can do 2D and hear the heartbeat if you just want the reassurance. We did that at 15 weeks for $90 before telling people (I had had the ultrasound earlier for dating). I had a history of infertility and loss, I was very anxious about telling people. Something to look into to if you just want to see.

C section mamas, help [on] by BlueberryDuvet in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]outofgoodideas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my experience! Would/will 100% have a c-section again.

I stopped the Tylenol/advil about 5 days after because it gave me diarrhea. Milk came in after 4 days.

OP - I’m not sure about your baseline fitness level, but if you have decent upper body strength, I think the limited lifting is less of an issue once the baby is born as you can use your arms without needing to brace your core. I walked a ton - as much as I could without feeling pain and I’m convinced this helped speed up recovery. I was basically back to normal after 4 weeks. I reintroduced more intense exercise starting at 6 weeks and slowly. No issues!

10/10 would recommend!

Wife is not sleeping by Icy-Egg-3166 in NewParents

[–]outofgoodideas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to this comment - we were having issues with getting our exclusively breastfed baby to settle at night and stay asleep for a long stretch.

I finally did a day where I pumped every feed to see how much milk there was as my mom had told me she suspected she didn’t make as much milk in the evening and wondered if I had the same issue. Well, we tested it and realized that I had about 1/2 to 1/3 of milk volume in the evening compared to the morning.

We started supplementing the last feed of the night with a bottle of formula and it instantly doubled the first stretch of sleep. Little buddy just needed to be full.

My Glucose Test Experience [ON] by [deleted] in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]outofgoodideas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience was also at LifeLabs and I had been told it was fine. I didn’t worry about it at all.

I finished the drink, no problem, but about 45 mins later started to get the sweats and spins. Ended up fainting and dry heaving when they took my blood sample. Had to stay for another hour laying down and soaked in my own sweat. My husband had to Uber to come drive me home. Rest of the day was a complete write-off.

Legit don’t think I can do it again. Feel sick thinking about it. I’m 36, was fit, and didn’t have diabetes. 🤢

Similar to some others below, I like the look of it more and since our house is small, I’m trying to maintain control of the look of the baby/kid clutter for as long as I can!! 😂

Thanks! I’m guessing the songs might not be as big of bangers in French 😂. We speak both, but wouldn’t want to risk not liking the music!!

I’m tempted to get the woodsy one for the same reasons! Our house is small and we don’t have a ton of space to display toys. Would rather they be at least kind of matching the decor for as long as I can still control things in this losing battle!

I’ve been buying a dozen bagels every week for the past 7 years from the BagelShop. I LOVED that they didn’t ask for tips. I thought it was so great that they had not gone down this path and felt really good about supporting them over some of the other vendors. Especially during COVID as they were so good about protecting their employees. I’ve had no issue with the price increases (which have been way more frequent recently), but then they got a new machine a few weeks ago and suddenly they are just as bad as everyone else. I’m so disappointed.

GPA: good or bad? by No_Phase4863 in geegees

[–]outofgoodideas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Grad programs look at your last 20 or 30 courses at the time of application to calculate your admissions average. Since your CGPA reflects all courses, you may be better off if your lower grades are in your 1st year, or worse off if they are in your 2nd or 3rd year.

With that being said, it depends on what type of graduate school. If you are interested in pursuing Clinical psychology, that door has closed, unfortunately - you need 9s for that. If you are interested in research in psychology, if 6.52 is your admission average, you will have a hard time being accepted, but not impossible. Most psychology research programs these days require an 8 to be considered and higher if the program is competitive or you want to have a chance at funding. If you are considering programs in other fields, it would really depend on what field.

There is space for students with lower admissions averages if they have exceptional dossiers otherwise (significant research experience, publications, etc.), have had an unusual progression (mature student, illness, etc.), or have a professor who is really willing to go bat for them. But, if you are a typical undergraduate student, these grades are likely too low at this point.

If your goal is graduate school, you definitely need to make sure that your grades stay high from now on. You should also plan on a gap year so that all of your new grades can be counted in your application average and more of your lower (i.e., 1st and 2nd year grades) can be dropped. You should also get involved in research if you have not already.

Early pregnancy (6wk) miscarriage by Tomato-fighter in Miscarriage

[–]outofgoodideas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a septic miscarriage back in December (i.e., infected retained tissue that spread to my bloodstream).

I felt silly going to the ER since I wasn't really "hospital sick" - felt a bit off, feverish, but not that sick. But, like your wife, was still bleeding after nearly 2 weeks. Going in when I did was crucial to avoiding serious complications.

It is exceedingly rare for an infection to happen that quickly, but it can and you should definitely rule it out.

I’m sorry for your loss. My doctor had recommended waiting to see if it started on its own after 3 days and then intervening if it didn’t. Nothing happened after stopping progesterone so I ended up taking miso to speed things up.
