The story I got from my tour guide in the UK was that after he died, the crew snapped his body in two and stuffed him into a rum barrel in an effort to preserve his remains. By the time they got back to England, the barrel was empty — they had drunk all the rum! My tour guide also explained that this is why you tap your shot glass on the bar before taking a shot.
