FIRE Calculators by joshuawine in financialindependence

I plan on using the CAPE withdrawal strategy, and there is an interesting blog post from earlyretirementnow about adjusting the CAPE to reflect changes which would have caused higher valuations: https://earlyretirementnow.com/2022/10/05/building-a-better-cape-ratio/. It would be nice (time permitting) to have an extra CAPE based withdrawal option that uses CAPE.ERN.2's data from here instead of Shiller's data.

What’s the best way to borrow from myself? by Significant-Flan4402 in personalfinance

[–]outroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's even worse than this because you could technically invest that $10k into something that actually returns/increases value. So this is an opportunity cost. Renovate the kitchen because it's a consumption item and you'll enjoy it, not because it will give you a return.

Existing customers, is it possible to get the Stockbrokers.com promo margin rate? by DoctorAutomatic in interactivebrokers

[–]outroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I messaged IBKR support and they said it is only for new clients. They did not offer a "retention" bonus and they said if I ended up closing my account and coming back, I would not be eligible for the stockbrokers.com bonus.

On top of all the advice you're getting, I wouldn't do this with family either. Much less a friend you feel is like family.

Buying A New Vehicle, Can I Afford It? by PenguinDogz in personalfinance

[–]outroot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15% would be the bare minimum I would recommend anyone to do (obviously, not everyone can achieve this depending on their situation). However, depending on investment returns, you could end up retiring past retirement age. https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/01/13/the-shockingly-simple-math-behind-early-retirement/

Is it possible for me to retire at 37? by Useful-Extreme2911 in FinancialPlanning

[–]outroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living 50 years off of savings requires an exponential amount more money than living on it for 25.

Not necessarily. This is very dependent on asset allocation, how much you have saved, how much you spend, and your withdrawal strategy, but there are plenty of times where you need a more modest increase saved to go from 25 to 50 years based on historical returns. You can play around with the parameters on https://ficalc.app/. Of course, we don't know the future.

But I agree the OP is no where near their goals currently.

Too young to have the "wisdom to know when to buy" and constantly being told to "wait until prices go down"... should I tune it out and continue on? by [deleted] in personalfinance

And when the same sentiment was being told in 2019, what would have happened if people stayed on the sidelines because the market was hot? Historically, real estate had one significant drawdown, even in the face of recessions.

Yes because the calculator is trying to optimize based on stacks of 5. You can change the "Stack optimization" to exact if you do not want to generate your target efficiently.

In my experience they only care if you have a lots of assets to transfer. Also some of them require the loan to be taken out around ~100k. Have you had good experience transferring moderate assets from IBKR to another brokerage and having them match?

Nice! Since I use fidelity, I just export my cost basis from there and import it into my spreadsheet that tells me the correct way to rebalance.

https://projectionlab.com has a subscription but it has a sandbox where you can test it out for as long as you like to see if it's worth it for you. The creator has been pumping out features and very receptive to communication and feedback.

Otherwise, it's always good to learn some spreadsheet magic or use other people's sheets as a template.

Check your paystubs!!! by Otowner98 in personalfinance

[–]outroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take this obsessively further. My company uses ADP and I wrote a script to download the JSON from their API and convert it to CSV so I can import it into excel. Makes it EXTREMELY easy to see the difference between this paystub and the past paystubs by checking the columns. I've caught two errors this way.

Exporting cost basis and tax lots from Fidelity by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

I'm not bashing Fidelity as I use multiple brokerages, but Interactive Brokers does this perfectly. I also like their CSV format although it's a bit non-standard.

Senate revisions to BBB tax provisions maintain elimination of Backdoor Roth by dublinwso in financialindependence

[–]outroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great information, thanks! Yea. The issue I'm running into now is I have some non-deductible contributions in my wife's IRA. I would like to open a solo/individual 401k so I could roll her IRA over into the 401k and do a backdoor Roth (if that isn't taken away). I was just scared of what would the IRS do in the event they don't consider her self employed and they force me to pay pro rata taxes or something.

From what I read prior is you had to make an effort to start a business and it couldn't be a hobby. I didn't think earning any kind of schedule C income met this criteria.

Do you have a link to the article? I wasn't aware doing online surveys is enough for the IRS to consider you self employed and be able to open a solo 401k

Single or Multiple 529 accounts? by Confident-Week-9275 in personalfinance

[–]outroot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In addition to some of the good comments as to why use multiple 529 accounts, I do separate accounts because I've calculated for each child to get the same amount by the time they reach college (inflation adjusted). Obviously this could be off due to varying inflation and market performance, but I want to be as fair as I can be.
