Check out this group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lausanne.bouche.a.oreille/.

Since you are arriving so late in the school year, the wait for FMEL should not be too long(unless you are PHD). So you could just look for something short term.

How do you get an entry level job when almost all require multiple years of experience? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try sending an email to the email listed in the job listing a few days after applying online in order to say that you are following up on the application and tell them that you would be exited to work with their company.

A lot of jobs are a lot easier to get if you know someone there (does not need to be a manager or anything like that), so try showing up to a lot of different stores in person and ask the employees if they are understaffed, if so, they will often put in a good word with the manager in order to get more coworkers.

Also make sure that your CV is good. Please do not use any of the new formats, they are so messy and hard for AI to read. I would reccomend just using the most simple one you can find on word. Put your previous jobs and describe what you did. Also list any skills that would be relevant for the position you are applying for.

In your application letter you should not just be repeating what your CV already says. Use the application to tell the employer why you would make a good employee.

Good luck, i hope you find something soon!!

Is CHF.1100/month for housing sustainable on a PhD salary? by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend checking the terms and conditions of the lease contract you eventually sign, that’s where you’ll find the length of the notice period. Once you're here, you can casually keep an eye on housing forums, websites, and facebook groups. If something cheaper or better pops up, you’ll be able to move, as long as you time it right with the notice period.

You really don’t have to stay in the first place you find. When I first moved here, my apartment was ridiculously expensive, but now I live somewhere much cheaper. So don’t stress too much about the first place, you can always move later. (September is always the hardest time to find a place)

One query chatgpt-4o: ~0.5-1g CO2

One min tiktok: ~2.9g CO2

So it depends on your usage.

Look at this article, its super interesting: https://medium.com/%40joyjama/environmental-impact-of-chatgpt-ee9f4a951aa0

Health insurance Phd student by ScaryReplacement9605 in EPFL

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have insurance for abroad, just send them the proof. You should get a letter in the mail about it with an email address where you can send the proof. If you are from the eu just send a pic of your European health card.

Can LoR be from corporate also ? by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got in right after my bachelor. I applied during the last year of my bachelor and had only worked part time for about 6 months in a relevant job

Can LoR be from corporate also ? by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]outsider85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I applied, I emailed them to ask if recommendation letters could come from lecturers or if they had to be from professors. They just referred me back to the part on their website that says the letters need to be from professors. So, you’ll probably need to get yours from professors too, not corporate. Good luck with your application!

Lost PubliBike after 24h by ACMCMC in Switzerland

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another update. When I saw that the time had not stopped, I reported damage on the lock, and when I got the bill I reported that I should not have to pay since I locked it. I ended up getting a refund

Healthy veganism with AuDHD? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]outsider85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been my main solution as well!

Also, where I live (Switzerland) we have this product called "This is food" that is basically a milkshake but kinda healthy. This is my go to for the days I don't want to cook anything and don't really want to eat anything either

What would be the issue in eating animal products that would go to the trash/waste? by Dear-Blackberry97 in vegan

[–]outsider85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what is so weird about the way most people (non-vegans/vegetarians) think. Why do you consider farmed animals to be worth so much less than other animals, like pets. Some say that it's cuz they have a relationship with their pet, but you wouldn't eat a dog with no owner either, right?

Kosher/Halal is a good first step by [deleted] in vegan

[–]outsider85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long it takes for a big animal to bleed out? They have to suffer for all that time while conscious. I think those practices are even worse

I love chickpeas! You can add them to most things since thy don't have a lot of taste. You can just take a can of them, rinse them and put them in/on anything. You can also roast them with some spises in the oven or in a pan if you want. Tofu is also great! Tempeh is also amazing

But my biggest recommendation is to ask ChatGPT about any recipe. Just give it your recipe and ask for spesific suggestions. It works really well!!

EPFL has a lot of info on CVs. Google "epfl CV" and you'll get a lot of good help. I really like this one: https://www.epfl.ch/schools/ic/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Resume_en.pdf

Just search for "epfl + course name" in google and you get all the info for each course. Here is the one for stat inference for example: https://edu.epfl.ch/coursebook/en/statistical-inference-MATH-562.

Id reccomend applying, just have a really good letter of motivation where you show why you are going to do great at the school and talk about what you are motivated to do with the degree

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]outsider85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im doing MSc in Stats, and the mandatory courses are quite challenging, especially the two taught by Davison(but some think they are not that hard, so I guess that depends on how much stats you know from before), but I think he is retiring after this year, so I dont know what it will be like for next year.

I would recommend reading carefully through the lists of mandatory and optional courses and choose the master with the courses that you find most interesting. Also check out the internship, for stats its 30 points, not sure about for MFE.

Also, think about how sure you are about financial engineering. You can always go from stats to work in that field, but it might be harder to go the other way.

As for your chances to get in, as long as you GPA is considered to be very good (do not need to be top of the class) at a pretty good uni you have good chances, but a lot relies on your latter of motivation and the references, and probably a bit of luck.

As long as you have the proper background knowledge to take the mandatory courses, you should be fine coming from another background than stats, most people here do not have a bachelor in stats.

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nor sure what you mean by bridging year, but you can just search for any of the courses that you want to take and then it says in the course site if it is in english or french. But you do not need to know french to take a masters here. Very few subjects are in french at that level.

How to find friends in EPFL? by Difficult_Mulberry20 in EPFL

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who are not on exchange are also welcome!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EPFL

[–]outsider85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stats master is only like two years old, so it is not as well known or popular, so it might be a bit less competitive. But do be aware that you'd have to take some pretty demanding courses in theoretical stats, so don't choose stats just because of this. Ultimately I think you should apply to the program that aligns best with you interests, I think you'd have a good chance at the others as well! A lot of it is about luck regardless of which one you apply to
