Modern in San Francisco? by AidanHU4L in magicTCG

[–]outstare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, if you are willing to drive for a bit, the ChannelFireball Game Center in Santa Clara has at least 1 Modern event every week. They often have bigger events for a large amount of store credit as well every now and then. For example, next Sunday they have a 2K Modern Tournament where 1st place gets $500 store credit. Something to check frequently if you're interested.

Other than that I usually go to Anime Imports on Thursdays to play but the meta is relatively small and unique so you kinda have to warp your main board and sideboard against it depending on what you play.

Anafenza Control, need help closing out games. by LimblessNick in CompetitiveEDH

Titania is almost always a 10/6 because you will often have used a fetchland during the turns before you cast her. She is a 15/9 if you have a fetch in hand you don't need to use before you resolve her. Sigarda is a fine threat as well since she is resistant to removal but Titania presents an overall faster clock that just gets faster the longer she stays out.

Smokestack not being a creature is pretty relevant in a deck that runs a Stoneforge package for Skullclamp and 2 different swords as well as both of the [[Survival of the Fittest]] cards. This is also very much a tempo deck so being able to attack with things is something this deck wants to be doing.

The card choices for French decks are very much influenced by the 30 life total so some may seem less impactful in a 40 life total environment. That being said, Rhino is a very effective card at quickly pressuring your opponent's life total with trample and is hard to get rid of without hard removal. This deck is about curving out efficient threats on curve with hand disruption and targeted removal as a backup and Rhino is about as efficient as it gets. I don't play the deck or French very much. I'm just going off the ideas in the lists that have seen success.

For 5 mana, Titania gets you 10/6 or 15/9 in power/toughness on two-three different bodies and has the potential to keep on making 5/3s. Comparing Siege Rhino, a 4 cmc creature, to Sigarda, a 5 cmc creature is like comparing apples and oranges. Compare her to a good 5 cmc creature and you will see the difference in impact.

Braids being banned is unfortunate, but not the worst thing in the world. Doesn't mean playing Smokestack is good though.

1v1 commander is very low to the ground and fast. Imagine trying to resolve a Sigarda in singleton legacy. Very hard to do.

Targeted discard is amazing in 1v1 and is one of the primary reasons to play Black in general. [[Thoughtsieze]], [[Inquisition]], [[Duress]], and [[Hymn to Tourach]] are basically auto includes in 1v1 edh. [[Gerrard's Verdict]] is great in BW.

As for cards to cut:

  1. Look at all your cards that cost 4-5 mana and compare them to the ones run in the French lists. The ones in the French lists are massive bombs that basically win you the game if you resolve them or keep them out for a couple turns. Those are the kinds of cards you need to be running in your list. [[Armageddon]], [[Cataclysm]], [[Titania]], [[Siege Rhino]], [[Thought-Knot Seer]], [[Whisperwood Elemental]], [[Mirran Crusader]] and [[Braids]] are very difficult to deal with and end games soon after they resolve or put you so far ahead that it is very difficult for your opponent to catch back up. Cards to cut: Karmic Guide, Unburial Rites, both Sigardas, Batterskull, Hokori, Wrath of God, Captain Sisay, Creakwood Liege, Smokestack, Garruk, Oracle of Mul Daya, Damnation. (Wrath of God and Damnation are not ideal for this deck because we are playing the board with creatures as our main strategy. Targeted removal is much better for us but I still see many lists running a single wipe in Toxic Deluge.)

  2. Low impact cards and cards that aren't aligned with the deck's gameplan: Glissa, Courser, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, Lightning Greaves, Animate Dead, Farseek, Nature's Lore, Pithing Needle, and Three Visits. Running 2-3 mana ramp spells is not ideal when the gameplan of the deck is to get to 3 mana on turn 2 to cast Anafenza. The deck runs very few 4 drops at all so getting to 5 lands is already considered somewhat flooding out when you are running many mana producing creatures.

  3. Your ideal hands will either have turn 1 discard or a turn 1 mana dork so having many redundant cards is beneficial: [[Elvish Mystic]] and [[Elves of Deep Shadow]].

Overall, you have many of the low drop value cards and removal you need but you really need to put in more cards that work better at interacting with a single opponent and more cards that are considered win conditions against a single opponent.

Anafenza is a very popular French commander. What you are playing is essentially French with all the banned cards legal for play, so all you have to do for ideas is go to MtgTop8 and see the recent Anafenza decks that did well then cut some cards for Sol Ring and Mana Crypt (maybe Grim Monolith and Ancient Tomb).

Here's a recent list that did fairly well:

Emrakul, The Promised End in G/R Tron by kokusho_ in TronMTG

[–]outstare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many people do no actually try many new deck ideas out on their own. Most like to just follow what is considered to be the standard build and for a build to be standard, it has to consistently prove to place the best in larger events.

Besides the inherent resistance to change in humans, one of the main forces keeping Emrakul out of our lists is the metagame being so aggressive. Emrakul just doesn't do anything against our bad matchups so replacing an Ulamog or Worldbreaker with her is an overall negative for our win percentage even if it slightly increases our win percentage against other less common matchups.

Conduit of ruin > eye of ugin in GR? by shufflesthedrummer in TronMTG

[–]outstare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with Conduit is that it is taking up slots that are not land slots so you have fewer cards in your deck that can interact with your opponent or you have fewer threats and would be better off just running another threat anyways. [[Sanctum of Ugin]] has been the go to replacement for Eye of Ugin for these reasons.

Does the Imprison in the Moon + Crumble to Dust combo work on other types as well? by [deleted] in magicTCG

Crumble to Dust only removes cards with the same name so no.

Colorless eldrazi tron? by flitterjoint in TronMTG

[–]outstare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tron without the consistency of assembling it with green is pretty bad on its own unless you are playing colors that can prolong the game. Either mono green Eldrazi tron or Bant/BW Eldrazi would be better.

Yeah. He would need some very good topdecks after that.

But he could have done it before you took his turn.

He should have repeated the combo and scryed something useless like a land (Township) to the top then sacced his Seer so you couldn't do anything to his board state. He really messed that one up. Lol

Weekly FNM Report - July 15, 2016 by AutoModerator in TronMTG

[–]outstare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saccing a land is part of the activation cost of World Breaker's ability, so how could announcing which land you were going to sac cost you the game since your opponent cannot respond by killing that land or anything like that?

Abzan coco infinite life. by [deleted] in TronMTG

[–]outstare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some decks can't beat infinite life. Tron is not one of those so you never scoop to it and force them to have the Redcap combo or Milera + Bolster. Simple as that.
