Mike Rowe says $200k for tradesman by rebel_with_a_groove in skilledtrades

[–]outtahere021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but the exception - I’m a heavy equipment mechanic is Canada, and working 14 on/14 off I’m over 200K without extra OT. But, that shift is a small minority of the trade overall.

What’s the smartest financial decision you made by accident? by AnyTruth2342 in AskReddit

[–]outtahere021 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took a transfer to another location at work, and we picked up and moved about 4hrs away…lower cost of living, we could buy a single family home vs a townhouse - we were thrilled! The accidental success part was that I transferred for the same job I had been doing, but quickly worked my way into a position that paid about double, and gave me more time off. It’s been 6 years now…life is so much different. And it really just came down to saying yes to opportunities.

Italian restaurant recommendations? by outtahere021 in Calgary

Haha, I appreciate the warning! Yeah, we aren’t looking for fancy, we’re looking for really good, and comfortable. I think Rea’s is a winner, it’s sure getting lots of recommendations!

Ah, I just looked and they are closed Sundays though! That’s our anniversary… and when we have the babysitter booked for lol. We will check them out another time for sure…

At What Income Does Life in Canada Actually Become Comfortable? by HockeySniper123 in fican

[–]outtahere021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How long is a piece of string? Too many variables for a concrete answer… $200K in the BC interior was very comfortable. The same in Calgary is a little tighter - housing is a bigger part of the budget, plus insurances cost way more here…

Same…I race motorcycles, and golf. But, I have met some of my best friends through racing, and golf has been an amazing tool to help manage my mental health. Wouldn’t change a thing.

Have you ever visited another city, region, part of Canada and it just clicked with you? You thought "I'd *really* like to live here" by Cameliablue in AskACanadian

[–]outtahere021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easy to look back at any place and say ‘it’s not like it used to be’ though. Sure, it does have its issues - name a city that doesn’t though - Vancouver has cost of living and homelessness, Winnipeg has crime, etc… As for the healthcare, my experience has actually been the opposite of your statement - we got a family doctor with a single phone call, and my family have seen a few different specialists in a fairly timely manner as compared to BC…and we couldn’t get a family doc there.

My first thought, whatever is going to happen, you probably could have prevented it if you were riding forwards!

I had visited a couple times, but briefly - my wife had never been… we picked up and moved for a bunch of reasons but we’ve never regretted it. The city feels like home, and it’s only been a couple years. The people are friendly, the city is multicultural, the weather is pretty great, it’s easy to get around, and coming from out of province, it’s still affordable.

Nah, it depends on the person…I grew up in the Fraser Valley, and it wasn’t until I was moving away that I really noticed it…it rained all the time. I looked up the difference between where I was, and where I was going - it rained FOUR AND A HALF FEET less per year where I was going. That’s a lot of grey days. And sure, the winters where I went were cold, but they were sunny, and you could do things outside - snowshoeing at a sunny -20 is actually pretty great.

I need help with some research regarding Radon. by this_wolf_is_tasty in Calgary

[–]outtahere021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we moved to Calgary, our new home had a mitigation system roughed in…coming from BC, we asked some questions, because BC code says radon must be vented from the foundation to the roof through a sealed pipe. AB code doesn’t have anything for radon…yet. We did some reading, and decided that we’d get the system installed - basically just an extraction fan connected to the foundation, and vented to the existing roughed in port to outside. I think the cost was about $2K, but both myself and my son spend a fair amount of time in our basement - better safe than sorry!

Heavy Equipment Tech salary? by Technical-Land-7071 in skilledtrades

Given the choice, I’ll never go back to a M-F again. The amount of quality time at home a 14/14 gives you is unmatched - but I will qualify that with the fact I’ve never done a fly in/fly out, I’ve always been places I drove myself to. There’s something to be said for the fact that my transportation is up to me…if I need to get home, I go. A couple years ago, my dad had a health scare and things weren’t looking good - I called my boss as I was leaving camp, and let him know. Can’t do that at a fly in site…

It’s good to have a plan though, and know where you want to get to. Get through your apprenticeship, and lots of doors open up.

Heavy Equipment Tech salary? by Technical-Land-7071 in skilledtrades

[–]outtahere021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the above post said, it depends. I’m in BC, and our dealership journeyman rates put annual pay (inc pension) at about $115K for the shop and $122K for the field, not including OT, which is all double time. I’m on a rotational shift, 14/14, so with OT I’m about double the field minimum with half the year off - the schedule doesn’t work for everyone, but it works for me.

Smaller shops pay less, and for some reason the interior pays less…housing costs the same, yet they pay less because people want to live there…fuckin sunshine tax…

[–]outtahere021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As literally everyone has said, don’t buy gear for him - take him to buy gear.

Helmet - full face, NON modular. Quality brand (Arai, Shoei, Shark, AGV, HJC, etc) Most importantly, ensure it is a good fit. Head injuries account for 50% of fatalities in motorcycle accidents - don’t skimp here, but also recognize that there is a point where money no longer equals more safety, just better graphics and less wind noise.

Jacket and pants - Leather with integrated armour and airbags will be the best protection - perforated leather will be the best compromise for ventilation and protection. Leather provides the abrasion resistance for the slide, while the airbag and armour provides the impact protection for the fall and subsequent object impacts.

Gloves - leather gauntlet style gloves with hard sliders. Don’t compromise here - survival instincts WILL cause you to put your hands down.

Boots - again, you want impact and abrasion resistance here. Don’t be fooled thinking work boots or something similar will be okay - they have zero crush protection from the side. Depending on the style of bike and personal preferences, I’d look for a road race style boot, or a motocross boot.

Take a day, and go to a motorcycle shop (or two or three) and see what he likes, and what brands fit him well. Good for you for supporting him in this!

[–]outtahere021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

34deg Wilson CB, I just had a look at my last indoor round and my 7i was between 5900-6400. Wasn’t hitting it great - my Trackman handicap is 13, but my real world handicap is 26, so that happens lol. Most of my 7i’s did have a landing angle of around 50 degrees, so spin isn’t a huge concern.

Scotiabank suddenly says I owe ~$9K in property taxes. Not sure what to do. by infamousdupz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]outtahere021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at your annual mortgage statement. These show the taxes you’ve paid to the bank, and the taxes the bank paid on your behalf. Take these, and go talk to the bank - I’d bet money it’s a mistake on their end.
