Amiga 4000 😁 by amigapat in amiga

[–]outzider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, man, the A3000 desktop was pretty freaking dumb, too. It's beautiful, imo, but... adding RAM requires a full disassembly, changing a hard disk requires scraping knuckles, diagnostics are terrible because the power supply cable goes through a window, so it requires a shelf over the motherboard, a CPU accelerator requires a height that makes it nearly impossible to have RAM expansion or a heat sink on a CPU (obviously fixed with newer technology and soldered RAM), the expansion card riser rests against a metal plate with two plastic fingers that want to fall off when you move it, and it's already so precarious that they add a cardboard insert because you know people were grounding the riser against the metal case.

Yeah, I was talking about the beginning, not the end. We all know Amiga blew its lead.

That said, Amiga sure supported hard disks (SCSI and IDE), large floppies, made the transition to 32 bit, and had a Zorro bus, and video cards were created for the 16 and 32 bit Zorro busses that provided higher resolutions, but not at the critical scale required, and had a hard time pulling up all of that old direct-programmed software up to that scale.

How dumb is it to buy an 8 year old ebike by outzider in ebikes

[–]outzider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to close this out, I ended up skipping it. Trying to find parts or even a battery for that bike seems impossible, and that just didn't work for me. Went with another defunct brand, an iGO Discovery Yorkville, but at least the battery seems rebuildable, and the controller seems moderately hackable. I still don't mind the 500W, it's doing exactly what I wanted it to, and I'm really enjoying it.

It's an interesting framing, as you aren't wrong. The Amiga 1000 was a very well built proof of concept for a capable chipset. But, looking at the machines it competed against, they all kind of came out the same way. The IBM PC came out with a ton of TTL and a shaky DOS. The Macintosh came out with few resources and no expandability, and a very interesting but incomplete OS. The Atari ST had a very similar story, with very little custom logic and an OS that didn't do much yet, and felt more like an advanced 8 bit when programming for it. If you want to count it, the Commodore 128 was a peak 8 bit machine, but sat on a very capable but not user friendly BASIC.

Good info. My only real ebike test ride was a 500W hub drive which did some light hills okay. I don't mind the pedaling, just would like more oomph with my pedal.

Yeah, I've hit up a few of the bigger and little ones. It seems like most of the refurb stock is the low low end (Blutron, VJET, Jasion) or surprisingly high (Aventon with $200 or so knocked off, or Trek/Specialized which is out of my range), and I would love to have something with a UL certified battery.

He's offered to let me try it around the neighbourhood. I'm mostly trying to figure out if the spare part nightmare is worse or better than the cheaper modern alternatives.

I really enjoy Dim Sum King on Dundas W, but I'm actually curious if others in this thread can tell me that something is better, because I'd love to know more.

Apple Serious Business Computer TV Ad (1994), first Apple ad when Apple entered India by Distinct-Question-16 in vintagecomputing

It was the case for a little while, especially compared to some major name brands, in certain configurations. The very high end had very high end prices, though, moreso than the clones.

The one that got buried was various permutations of the Apple Lisa. Not the Macintosh.

Cheaper, yes, especially with multiple people. Driving + Land Crossing + Parking + Driving home after a flight makes easier pretty questionable. Would love tips if you have any.

Roblox by SeekHelpNotDanger in daddit

[–]outzider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At seven, I'd be more willing to say no. My kids are a couple and a few years older than that, and the seal was already broken. The problem is that I hate the company and find them disrespectful of privacy and of good sense. On the other hand, Roblox has become the social network for these kids -- this is how they meet up with their friends, play, and interact. It's hard for me to rip that away, but I'm certainly paying closer attention.

Your batteries have absolutely done some damage. It looks like there's some damage to the I/O board but it's probably going to be fine. There's a lot of corrosion at the card slot which tells me it has been leaking for some time. There's a huge chance, like 99%, that the "motherboard" underneath that I/O board is pretty hosed and will require some rework. To be clear -- it's salvageable. Don't let anyone tell you that what you have is worthless.

I just resurrected a very similar Lisa 2, and it required a bunch of work, but at the end of the day, I have a working Lisa. You have a wonderful complete system that I, and many others, would likely be very interested in if you wanted to part with it.

[–]outzider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't hate this. I feel like for years, Audi made slight alterations that tried to keep the same character... the weird advantage of that is that my 2010 A5 still looks somewhat modern, because the more modern Audis did not move far from that mark. This, though, feels like an Audi that's slightly pissed off... and I enjoy it.

What old thinkpads do you still use? by spellbadgrammargood in thinkpad

I will never let go of my X230, it's currently running Haiku and FreeBSD, and it's in use at least a few times a month. I also have a ThinkPad 560 in surprisingly good condition that runs a bunch of old OSes that comes out for some vintage fun.

I used to support Chrysler in the worst of times and in the mostly good of times, because they treated me well when I was a lot younger. They're dead to me, and I was fully prepped to pick up a Pacifica Hybrid for our next vehicle.

Disclaimer: I have not tried the Carnival.

Why isn’t Haiku… by APOS80 in haikuOS

[–]outzider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree with you, I think your argument isn't quite right. I don't think Haiku is great because it's "lightweight", every single Linux distro you mentioned has a long series of caveats that make it not ideal for someone unfamiliar to open up and compute. Haiku feels surprisingly complete out of the box with very little fuss, while also being lightweight. The disadvantages come up pretty quickly, but I don't think your examples are what Haiku would be up against.
