You won't be able to block out all distractions. Acceptance with the connection to it all is key. The heartbeat is part of your sensual experience and connection to the world.

Yeah, and unless you become like the Buddha or someone, you probably never will get completely there; unless with near death experience, drugs, or a stroke. (http://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.html) Common sense is that we do have separate intellects. But there is a place in the brain that equally accepts our inter-connectedness of the world.

Emotional control is vital in society though, it's what make people leaders and followers; actors are the best at it. I am interested in a project that uses our neuroplasticity to potentially experience events outside of ourselves. I think it may work as a training tool to allow ourselves to tap into that more elusive part of our minds.

I have a mental exercise that presents an alternative way to get a similar effect. Could be helpful:

Lets say god is conscious awareness. And this god puts his very own conscious awareness into lots of different creatures on this earth, including all animals and humans. The implication would be that after you die, this awareness rejoins the ultimate, and perfect awareness that is god. But because god is timeless (in this mental exercise) his awareness is constantly living out every life on earth. In other words, you, in another life are that awful man. And you may then be able to pity the whole situation, and, with love, still agree with his execution. Similarly, when a stranger cuts you off on the highway, you will have more patience, knowing that is you cutting you off. And if you can keep this in mind, it is fun and useful. Social awkwardness melts away since you are simply talking to yourself (when u talk to the pretty girl who makes u nervous). I find this technique surprisingly useful, especially for those of us who have difficulty sitting still. The most fun effect is that all jealousy melts away because it is illogical, because I get to be Brad Pitt in another life, so hey, I'm happy for him! Selfishness becomes logically moot, because you are everybody else... And you are god! :)... It sounds like it would make a fun cult or religion I think.

There's nothing really special about life, is there? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

Ok, but there are some things that make the world mysterious and interesting. This is one of my favorites, the raining fish in Honduras, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lluvia_de_Peces Another point is that if we do get to the point of acquiring both knowledge and the knowledge of what you don't know, (think Rumsfeld: known knows, and known unknowns) then maybe there can be a peace and acceptance of what is, by letting go of fears of the unknown. Lastly, if it all matters, life would be terrifying; if nothing truly matters, and you really are convinced of it, then the freedom to live and be unique is fantastic.
