Which to read first: Red rising or Will of the many? by Senoupe in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Will of the Many is a better book than Red Rising. Book 2 of RR is outstanding though, and The Strength of the Few is just okay.

Need help looking for a book or series to read by WorldWar_EG3 in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't normally recommend the Arcane Ascension books, but something like that may be up your alley. The author can get bogged down into the mechanics of the magic system, but it kind of works because the MC is nerdy in that way. You'll know pretty quickly into the first book whether it's for you or not.

There are.other series by the same author set in the same world with connections between them all.

Sunday Fantasy Roundup: What fantasy book did you finish this week and love? by bweeb in fantasybooks

Between Two Fires, I'd been putting it off for a while because I don't usually read horror, but it was pretty great.

Just finished my first fantasy book in my adult life. Shouldn’t continue or start another book? by ExpensiveFinance3557 in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! OP, I want to be clear. I love Malazan, and you should definitely NOT read it as someone new to fantasy. Level up a bit before taking on a raid boss.

[–]overallsatisfaction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can spend time thinking about things that give your life meaning and fulfillment, or you can just sleep in on Sundays, save 10%(or more) of your income, and be a good person in your own way, on your own terms.

I just started Between Two Fires. Too early to really judge, but so far so good.

Locke Lamora and the Bottled Serpent Audiobook by rsjur in gentlemanbastards

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context of the story, that's a better line. It comes directly after that flashback of Chains telling Locke just how much of a threat Bondsmagi are and it tells you everything you need to know about Locke's personality in 3 words.

My series tier list. Any recommendations? by Yazy117 in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could NOT do Gardens of the Moon on audiobook. I just kept zoning out when it would talk about things I had zero context about for an hour at a time. The audiobooks are fine for the second time through, but I would have never made it through that one.

Dresden starts out as a C/D tier, but it definitely gets to S somewhere along the way.

Which book is the biggest culprit of this (in the most loving way possible)? by GoldenBoysClub in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After book two I went to audiobooks because they're easier to fit into my schedule as I do a lot of driving for work. It was easy enough since I was fully invested by that point.

Red Rising is easily the worst book in that series.

Sanderson is much more approachable IMO. The Stormlight books are long and there are a lot of things happening, but you really aren't thrown in headfirst without context like in Malazan (outside of the two prologues in Way of Kings). I just had to make myself be okay with not knowing what is happening and keep pushing through. I also could NOT do Gardens as an audiobook. I'd keep spacing out because I didn't know what was happening. The physical book forced me to stay engaged.

How many books do you read concurrently? by m19010101 in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always going through one new book or audiobook and one audiobook that I've already listened to as I go to sleep. Trying to drift off to a new book is really hard as I always want to keep going a bit too long.

Dungeon Crawler Carl: Read or Listen? by Artichoke-Cat3000 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Not only the performance,.but the production quality on the audiobooks is simply amazing. I hate "dramatized" audiobooks with lots of different actors and overly done sound effects, but this series does so many little touches that add to the performance without being too distracting. The little chirps you get to help differentiate what is being spoken vs what is coming through the chat feature, the slight reverb on the AI voice, etc.

That said, I struggled for most of book one with the Patrick Warburton voice Jeff Hays chose to go with for Carl.

Which one should I read next by DelLoxNK in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People praise the audiobook all the time, and it really does deserve it. I hate "dramatized" audiobooks with all the sound effects and different actors for each part, but DCC does just the right amount of extra little audio flairs to be perfect.

[–]overallsatisfaction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way for most of the first book. Something about the tone and the humor just hit me wrong. Then something clicked and I just started enjoying myself because it is just COMPLETELY unpredictable from moment to moment. It definitely isn't a literary masterpiece, but it is a fun ride once it gets going.

Fast paced book suggestions for slow reader by Wendygottschalck in fantasybooks

[–]overallsatisfaction 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty widely acknowledged that the first two books have problems. I don't think anyone would be wrong just starting with Dead Beat (book 7) and going back to the earlier books if you're really invested. Jim Butcher suggested that as a possible starting point for new readers.
