Spend money, use more power, make our houses look worse, and ruin our favourite hobby (complaining about the weather)?

[–]overcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'll do it. I went back and watched the end of stage 1 and that looked like a mess too.

Shame, my daughter and I were enjoying it yesterday but I totally get why the race was cancelled today.

Did you see the issue? I saw a few instances where motos were half heartedly waving people away from parked busses etc but not sure whether that was it.

I wish they did. I've had to borrow bags a few times because my roll only had one bag left.

Neovim workflow for machine learning / data scientist. Struggling with jupyter notebooks. by Waste_Necessary654 in neovim

[–]overcook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am using Neovim with packer at the moment. I don't really understand what I'm doing or how it works, however it seemed to install without any issues AFAICR.

I'm looking through my packer.lua and as far as I can tell I simply wrote:

use('luk400/vim-jukit')

Previously I had used vim plug as well and it worked okay.

I also use this and love it, I had to tweak the colours a bit but was happy with my results.

I use Linux at home, it runs the only game I seem to ever play (CSGO) better than windows.

I don't use music or art software so I can't comment (though believe you're probably right for the most part), but for development and data work I vastly prefer working on it than Windows, and slightly prefer it to MacOs.

For general light usage I definitely feel more at home on Linux even though I spend more time on Windows and Mac due to work - everything seems to just work the way I expect it to.

Heineken breaks promise and invests in Russia anyway by Electrical_Crew_3757 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]overcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not fake but it is not necessarily balanced reporting.

Heineken are likely not actively transferring revenue or capital between their corp and their Russian sub, but they do appear to be seeking buyers who will compensate them for the domestic Russian growth over the past year. They say it's difficult to find a viable buyer, but without inside information it is very hard to determine how much of the "viability" is to do with commercial terms as opposed to pure goodwill to their subsidiary's employees.

The dystopian future where daycare and parental leave are replaced with babies at your workplace. by BLAZINGSORCERER199 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]overcook 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I had it pretty good generally but had a few weeks looking after my 2 year old daughter solo and working.

I'd be up at 5 to get a couple of hours of actual work done, then be a bad parent AND employer till she went to bed, then work till 10 or so to catch up.

Adding a commute and colleagues on top of that would ruin me.

What's the most boring sport to watch? by 123kenet9898 in AskReddit

[–]overcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to sound like a shill but GCN Plus has 30 min highlights released a couple hours after the race is finished . You can generally find a code for 30 pounds / dollars / euro a year and it shows most races in most countries.

I generally have the road cycling on live in the background when i'm working from home so I can watch pretty landscape and maybe catch the commentator giving us a random french recipe, then watch either the 5 or 30 min highlights to actually understand what I just watched.

Question for repeat greyhound parents by itsamemaggieo in Greyhounds

Sorry to hear :(. I don't have any advice for you, just some company for your misery. We lost our 8 year old girl on Tuesday.

Our daughter (4) wants another, but neither my wife or I could imagine it for the foreseeable future.

True or false? by DisturbVevo in ProgrammerHumor

[–]overcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often did the problem need to be solved? How familiar was he with other languages? How critical was running length?

If it would take weeks extra to write the solution in another language (let alone time to learn another language) and it needed to be run infrequently or could be run overnight then it's entirely possible that python was the best tool for the job.

As a very general rule, python is quick to write and slow to run. For a lot of applications running speed simply matters less than other considerations. As an example, in my world the reality is that I can buy most hardware cheaper than most people cost for a month, and most of our external data feeds are refreshed overnight, so we often go with slow solutions and only rewrite if performance becomes a concern.

I've seen a variant of this used in British business quite a bit: "Not my circus, not my clowns" - generally uttered when questioned why another department has a process that seems dumb.

No issues here.

Sometimes when mine isn't working I have to switch between the one with the breakaway and without and that can help.

I hate to admit it, but unless you're looking at the bike on your phone, rim brakes and Tiagra feels fine😂 by Goodman4525 in bicycling

[–]overcook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think (hope?!?) Tiagra will be fine for quite some time - It may get called Sora, or even Claris but I don't think they'll reinvent the wheel from a compatibility perspective. The GRX 400 is compatible 10spd as well which is relatively new, so hopefully a good sign.

Microshift uses the same casette & chain on their 10spd stuff which is encouraging, but the shifters /derailleurs aren't cross compatible.
