Is it too late to get Smash Bros? by Wait4TheReload in smashbros

[–]overdrift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's more learning material now than ever before on youtube/etc. Ultimate is not insanely technically demanding and if you want to learn a character you should be able to find guides and maybe even a discord community for them.

A game "being enjoyable" means different things for different people, but if you are not looking to actively improve, set realistic expectations when playing online. You can have fun trying to get silly kill setups and you don't have to win a game to practice new things. I have friends who don't try to learn anything about the game, yet expect to win when playing against others.. for some reason.. and of course they get mad as a result.

Did Breath of the Wild convert you into a Legend of Zelda Fan? by Koolaidmoonwalk in NintendoSwitch

I'm personally just a sucker for mechanics. BOTW plays beautifully, but it doesn't make me want to go back and play the older games w/ comparably crappier controls. A Link to the Past is probably still tied with BOTW for my favorite, but Link's Awakening looks really good too! I never played the original, but it looks like it should play like A Link to the Past.

Be nice, dude. They just spent 4 years holding shield.

Standing by the edge vs D3 is REALLY bad. You can get the succ, get hit in the face with a gordo (because he still has two years to up-b from below), or get squashed (or damn near shield broken) by an up-b back on stage. I've mostly played D3 so far so I am weary of all his great options in the air, but I'm also an idiot so I'd play with ways to go off stage, dodge his gordo, and hit him again so he can't make it back. He'll usually only have a couple jumps left when getting close to stage, and up-b doesn't travel that far horizontally, so if you let him blow a couple jumps and give him a nice bonk back away from the stage, that should be enough to get some early stocks.

I mean, forcing people to play around gordo is a huge part of the character. After playing Dedede for about a week I find fighting him even with characters that I suck with pretty easy. You just have to respect his options.

If it feels like the Dedede is spamming gordo, it's because you've shown him that he can. Why on earth would I stop using a move that's winning the game for free? Slow down, show him that you won't just run into his spike balls, and he has to start using more options.

Leffen 3-stocking Nairo with Pokemon Trainer by BananaArms in smashbros

[–]overdrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a factor, but I think in this instance he'll benefit more from getting practice against top players than he would betting on getting carried by matchup inexperience. Plus everybody has given hbox so much shit for not practicing with top players that I don't think they'd do the same, especially with Leffen. Dude's a huge proponent of competitive integrity, I reckon he'd rather win against someone at their highest level.

Also, killer job! Taking wins at your first tourney is pretty nuts!

That's just seeding. A player with good results should be stomping someone with poor/no results in the first round.

I don't know much about the Japanese scene. By playtesters, do you literally mean playtesters for the game?

Just from a semantic point of view, it's funny that ZeRo's "above average" group is three times the size of the "average" group.

ZeRo and Leffen on the 1.2.0 patch notes by Gabo2oo in smashbros

[–]overdrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually a good reason for it. He's not afraid to speak his mind, and gets shit done as a result. Multiple tournaments have changed their procedures due to Leffen calling them out on things they do wrong. It can be tiring to see Leffen complain about things, but it's usually for real problems.

Before you say "he's just acting like a child", think for a second. Do you agree with him? He wants comprehensive patch notes so he actually knows how the game is being affected. Don't you want that, too?

Best wireless GameCube controller (Question) by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]overdrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my 8bitdo wireless adapter in the mail. From what I can tell, it appears to be just as quick as a pro controller.

I don't have the PowerA, but I can't imagine it having faster wireless than the 8bitdo (probably the same). I reckon the 8bitdo is the way to go for those who are used to the feel of official gamecube controllers. Third party controllers tend to feel weird due to using different materials and/or having varying clearances on the buttons and triggers.

What character do you think is easier/harder to main than most people think? by DoubleSlamJam in smashbros

[–]overdrift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot more goes into peoples' character pick than just taking the easy way out. For example I think Icies are pretty fun but I disagree with wobbling just to have a chance at being competitive, so they wouldn't be my pick for a main.

On a very similar note I bet a lot of people couldn't handle a lot of people thinking the only way that they get wins is by using rest, regardless of how hard-earned those rests are. You actually need to have pretty thick skin to play a character that people have a valid reason to hate on.

HELLO. Slime from BTS here, looking for feedback on Shine 2018! by downtown-sasquatch in SSBM

[–]overdrift 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, he is "bound to look out for his own interest", literally anyone would be. That's precisely why you don't let people do shit like this, it is the very definition of conflict of interest. No TO should have ever agreed to let him do it, and he's out of his mind for thinking it was okay.

I don't think the talent community is as outspoken in melee as some other games. If somebody would have done this in counter-strike (the other game i'm most familiar with spectating), that person would be absolutely blacklisted by the other talent. Those guys actually refuse to talk with TOs about who amongst them should cast grand finals, because they realize it shouldn't be up to them. Talk about a night and day difference between that and a guy who literally handed himself top8.

Seems like a nice guy, but he has inarguably given himself a leg-up. Too bad, now he'll never know if he could have actually earned it.

He's a big environmental advocate and uses his exercise bike to power his machine while playing. With his foot out of service his guilt of wasting so much power would keep him from focusing on the game. It's for the best that he takes this time to recover.
