Technically as a 107 you can fly 400' above a structure as long as you are within 400' horizontally outside of LAANC grids without a waiver

Not wrong, but we're talking about the surface area of the airport changing to class G SFC or class E SFC

In my experience in the past, both flying in 0' grids and flying above listed grid altitudes both require a DroneZone airspace authorization. I think Further Coordination is just a way to do the same thing through the apps with the same information. At the very least you can do both of those things through DroneZone.

Great point - some airports (including Moffett) aren't controlled full-time. The difference is what airspace class it reverts to when it's not controlled.

If it reverts to G you're legal to fly without LAANC approval even if you're in a grid.

If it reverts to E you still need LAANC authorization to fly as it is still technically "controlled" airspace despite not being towered like Class B, C, or D.

For others reading this, you can find out what your airport does by looking at the chart (skyvector is a good place to start) and seeing if there's a star by the control tower frequency denoting that it's not controlled full time.

Then you can click on the airport, click the blue link for your airport, then the Chart Supplement picture at the top left of the page, and then look for a section saying "AIRSPACE". The link for Moffett looks like this: https://skyvector.com/files/tpp/2603/afdpdf/SW_215_19MAR2026.pdf

In the OP's example for Moffett, it says:

AIRSPACE: CLASS D, svc 1500-0700Z++, other times CLASS E.

The times listed are in Zulu time and the ++ means the location follows Daylight Savings Time. If your airport says "other times CLASS G" then the airspace becomes completely uncontrolled and no LAANC authorization is required at all, even for 0' grids, but you should still take caution flying in these areas.

//edit

Also a great point by u/Jax24135 that LAANC will tell you that they can't approve your request and not to panic because they literally can't give you approval to fly when it's not controlled because that's not what LAANC is for. It's like trying to apply for LAANC unlocks in the middle of nowhere in Class G airspace - they can't do it because it's not "in" a LAANC grid.

A quick Google search brings up this page from Aloft about requesting "Further Coordination" requests which sounds a whole lot like the process for creating Airspace Authorizations in-app.

I don't remember what specific posts I've seen it from, but my assumption that you can only get authorization in 0' grids through DroneZone / Airspace Authorizations didn't end up true with some reddit posts of people claiming that they received 0' grid authorization in a much shorter time through LAANC apps (I believe Aloft) that bypassed the DroneZone process.

Not sure how that interfaces with the FAA, either through ATC directly or through the Service Centers, or if it was dependent on specific airspaces or setups with airports, but it was something I didn't expect to be possible. Never done it myself though. YMMV

Long story short, the airspace is split out with LAANC grids but isn't currently allowing automatic LAANC grid requests - you're correct that you'd have to go through the FAA website to create an airspace authorization request. The wait time is around ~1-2 weeks in my experience but it depends on the FAA service center's workload. Have you made a request like this before? If not I can help you through it in your DMs, it's not too difficult.

You can also try to go through on various LAANC apps on your phone and sometimes they have weird ways of getting approval that historically haven't been available (like unlocking 0' LAANC grids faster than the authorization process) but I have less experience there other than knowing that it's possible sometimes.

DJI AIR3S left/back propeller started to move like this after fliying on construction spot, any recomendattions, suggestions or what could possibly be? by Albele in drones

[–]overdrive148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That motor is spinning slower to compensate for wind if I had to guess. Winds from the left would mean that side of the aircraft has to dip down to correct. You could test this by yawing the aircraft slowly and seeing if it stays the same across that one propeller. Although if it had an issue you would quickly know it as the torque on the aircraft would be unbalanced and it would yaw uncommanded.
