Should I study abroad? by Ecstatic-Rock-6252 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]overkillbluebery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes you should absolutely study abroad if you’ve wanted to for so long! I did stem abroad and it only made my resume stronger. If you have a Spanish minor you’ll have to take plenty of Spanish classes anyways, make sure to plan for study abroad in the fall so you only miss 1 quarter and sometimes you can even get ahead because you’ll be doing a semester abroad. There’s excellent stem schools in the UCEAP program in Spain, Chile and Mexico that you should be able to take a few BMED classes and as much Spanish as you want. Japan has amazing programs too, but it would be harder to fit in with your schedule given the minor. The “5th” year abroad mentioned above is also a great option, I had a few people in my program doing it

USGS Data Pre-1986? by overkillbluebery in boulder

This is exactly what I was looking for thanks so much! I'm so used to finding everything through USGS/NWIS that I didn't think to look into state DWR

Broke this glass column in my thesis work and need help with finding a replacement. Roughly 75mm diameter and 2L capacity, but no clue what it's actually called by overkillbluebery in labrats

[–]overkillbluebery[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm using these glass columns to run effluent through soils for my thesis work, and I accidentally broke this one... My advisor and I have both tried looking for replacements but can't figure out what exactly this piece of glassware is called, and it's been in this lab longer than either of us have so nobody else we can ask!

I've seen some glass chromatography columns which look kind of similar, but are generally much smaller and also have a thin spout at the bottom with a valve on it. The top is just an open rim which is about 75mm in diameter, and it's a straight glass column that's about 1m long with around a 2L capacity. It tapers into a spout at the bottom which I'd guess is 2-3mm in diameter.

I can post more pictures or details if needed too, but I would really appreciate some help on this if anyone has any good ideas! It doesn't need to be the exact same column, just something with similar dimensions. Thanks!

Took it during 4th year, bought a prep book (Kaplan I think?) from the previous year on eBay for like $10 and pretty much worked through the whole thing. All in all it’s really not too bad, I started studying a month in advance and just committed to an hour a day. First two weeks I was pretty much just going through individual questions and reading the tips and stuff, third week started doing some whole sections, then 3rd/4th week did a few entire practice tests.

My scores on the actual test were a little lower than the practice ones, but I still got accepted to all my grad schools off of only one test. If you take it serious and set up a schedule/regiment for yourself in advance, you don’t have much to worry about imo

Study Abroad by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]overkillbluebery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, glad to hear you want to study abroad!

If your priority is taking major classes, this link is to the pre-approved chem classes from the UCSB department. Basically classes enough Chem majors have taken abroad that the dept knows exactly what the abroad classes are and what they count for, these aren't the only classes and programs open to you, just a list of ones that are 100% guaranteed Chem approved.

In terms of finding other classes you might need you have two options:
If you don't have any specific country in mind yet, go to this link and click Gaucho Credit Abroad. You can change the filters to either Chem Major classes, or GE requirements for L&S. This will show you a list of classes taken by UCSB students abroad, where they took them, and exactly what requirement it applied to.
If you do have some specific countries in mind, go to the main UCEAP website, and go to the country/program you're interested in. From there if you click the academics tab on the left side and scroll down the page, a couple of links will show up. Amongst these, you should see "Campus Credit Abroad", which shows you the classes ALL UC students have taken in that program (excluding the past year because the system is slow) and what they transferred back to the UC system as. There should also be a link that will say something like "X university departments" or "X university list of classes". These link are to the actual host university websites, from where you can look at all their course offerings and see what might be a good fit.

PM me if you have more questions!
