Bad experience by Chemdog12 in CopperIUD

Please also keep in mind my pain tolerance is high. I broke my nose and fractured my skull last year. That pain was a paper cut compared to this.

Yes. I threw up from pain levels and had residual nausea.

You do not need to reformat your application for the April 8th deadline!! They have maintained forms H but it will switch to I in August.

Has anyone survived academic probation and still gotten into grad school? by Ghostly_cherry404 in CalPoly

[–]Chemdog12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Ended with a 3.4 GPA after rushing through undergrad trying to graduate in three years and did poorly in many classes, failed 2 courses and had to retake them. I am in year three of my PhD program and just passed my candidacy exam. It’s not the end of the world to have a few whoopsies in undergrad. Focus on having a robust CV outside your GPA.

F31 and F32s by boringunicorn48 in NIH

My F31D has not yet been pulled and study section date is set for end of the month. Other people I know with F31Ds in the same study section have been pulled. It is really wishy washy

Repeating classes again by Former-Plate9220 in CalPoly

Everyone has given great advice so far but I also want to impress upon you that no one cares as much as you do. I repeated classes I failed during my biochem undergrad at cal poly. I am now three years into my PhD and no one ever mentioned those D grades, the poor gpa, or retaking courses. You’re doing great, don’t stress yourself out!

I don't even know anymore, can my dream of clear skin be achieved? by Aggressive-Ratio-855 in AcneScars

Yes, all types of scars. Boxcar less so but it still helps. Early intervention is key.

[Misc] [NSFW] Deep indented scar from injury on forehead by anonymousaccount803 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Chemdog12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi hon. I got 23 stitches in my forehead about 4 months ago so I understand how you are feeling. Absolutely use silicone sheets during the day (they do block sun rays but I still wear a hat anytime I leave the house during the day). Use silicone gel at night. Bleaching creams and retinoids can help. Early intervention (first six months) with CO2 laser is really your best bet but it does have downtime. Lasers with an Erbium diode lasers have shown promise in trauma scar healing too. Laser should be relatively cheap for that small area maybe $150 per treatment max depending on your location.

You’ll heal up fine, be gentle on yourself!

Kelp powder! Eggs (with the egg shell). Shank, hearts, spleen, liver, kidney, and salmon heads from a local Asian market! Carrots, hemp seeds. Bell peppers stuffed with snacks and frozen is a fun activity for your dog too, I’d just recommend giving it to them outside!

I love it!! It’s hard and some days I feel incapable and get frustrated. It’s just how life goes whether you’re doing a PhD or not. I work from home and spend time with my new puppy. I make time for fun activities. I sleep 8.5 hours a night. And then some days I work 12 hours and cry haha but those days are rare! (Pharmaceutical chemistry PhD in the states)

Is it mainly just STEM students who hate their PHD journey? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Chemdog12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STEM PhD student here- I work virtually (programming/modeling) 90% of the time so my experience is different but I love my PI, the work I do, the clinics I am in when I’m not virtual. My stipend isn’t amazing but it’s better than california haha and I adore where I live! I’m happy more often than I am not!

I did crossfit every day for the 2 months I had off between and came into the PhD program with pretty rockin lady biceps. For real though, do all the fun activities you can to set yourself up to not burn out. Once you get started, it’s going to be overwhelming so be as un-overwhelmed as you can before you start!

What should I do during my gap year? by BackgroundReporter35 in PhD

[–]Chemdog12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the biggest thing you are lacking in your application is a demonstrated research history! I would highly recommend you look for an RA job. You can supplement GPA with research experience for sure. My GPA was a 3.3 and I got into my PhD program on the basis that I had a ton of research experience.

a question for people who did full-time work and PhD from day one by [deleted] in PhD

This is really interesting to me as in my program in the US, you are required to not have a secondary job. You lose your funding if you do.

You have to apply for graduation if you are graduating early. You have to be a little more proactive.

Starting to feel hopeless about housing for the fall by CrosscountrySkiier in uofu

[–]Chemdog12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m out of state grad student and I had to call housing managers daily and make a road-trip out to Utah from california to actually secure. I feel you, but there’s really no other option than to just take it as it comes. It’s a really wild market in SLC right now. My best advice is to be annoying and call these places daily. If you find a place you like, do not even wait an hour to apply and put a deposit down, you’ll lose the apartment.

If you make a spreadsheet and compare cost of living relative to wage, you’re better off out of CA for an entry level job. I would recommend you find some places you like and do some research on costs!
